- Found Footage: Baby Chipmunks Prefer Macs Too!
Filed under: Humor, MacBook, Found Footage
Well the evidence is in, small rodents prefer Macs! I think this one was mislabeled by the original poster. I'm not at all sure, but that looks more like a baby chipmunk than a squirrel to me (please correct me on that one). In any case, it's good to know that the heat generated by the MacBook makes somebody happy.

Filed under: Tips and tricks, Software Update, Troubleshooting
Gruber points to this post by Rosyna at Unsanity regarding a bug in Apple's Software Updater. According to Rosyna, "when you see the 'Optimizing System Performance' phase of a software update, Mac OS X is really updating prebinding. Updating prebinding has a very, very nasty bug in it... If multiple processes are updating prebinding at the same time, then it is possible for a system file to be completely zero'd out. Basically, all data in the file is deleted and it is replaced with nothing." Yikes! Rosyna claims most of the problems that arise from software updates are manifestations of this bug. His advice: "When 'Optimize System Performance' appears during the update process do not touch your computer and definitely do not launch any applications." I know some are inclined to blame the Unsanity APEs for pretty much any and everything, but I think it's worth considering what Rosyna has to say.
In response to this Gruber points to a old post of his own on updating (we even mentioned it back in the day). Basically, Gruber advises waiting a full day until after the update is released, then installing the update clean (with no other applications running), letting it finish, and then rebooting. These seem like prudent steps, and probably worth the hassle in order to avoid the prebinding bug.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Miglia is aiming their new Mac Mini shaped TVMax+ squarely at the "missing link" between standard definition broadcast television and the Apple TV (and iPod). They are calling it a "content collection hub" ; the TVMax+ features a SD television tuner together with a hardware encoder that supports MPEG-2, MPEG-4, and DivX allowing it to be used (via USB 2.0) with less powerful machines than products that depend on the host machine for encoding. This should allow the TVMax+ to produce recordings that can be streamed to the forthcoming Apple TV.
Given Miglia's recent loss of an EyeTV license (which we previously mentioned), I was curious to see what software they planned to use, but that remains unclear. There is a screencap of a "MigliaTV" controller widget, however, along with announced support for both the TitanTV and tvtv electronic programing guides, so it looks like Miglia is trying to roll their own solution.
The TVMax+ is $199 and requires at least a G4/500 or any Intel processor
