  • Pogue on the Apple TV
    Uncle Walt likes it, but what does David Pogue, NY Times tech columnist, think of the now shipping Apple TV? The short answer: he likes it.

    Pogue compares Apple's offer to the XBox 360 and the Netgear EVA8000 (seen to the right). The XBox 360 is big and noisy, but offers you HD downloads. Pogue also found navigating the menus a little clumsy with the joystick. Speaking of clumsy, Pogue says the EVA8000, which can stream content from any folder on any of your Macs or PCs and can even play tunes purchased from iTunes (though that's a PC only feature for some reason) has the stink of a 1.0 product all over it. The menu system is ugly, setup was difficult, and overall the experience was not pleasant.

    Pogue also included a little tidbit I hadn't seen anywhere else. Thanks to the magic of iTunes/iPod syncing if you are watching a video on your iPod, pause, hook you iPod up to your Mac, and then turn on your Apple TV it will remember where you paused that video and start from that point on the Apple TV. Nifty.

    The Apple TV wins based on design, ease of use, and ease of setup. Who cares that it only works with iTunes (though on both Mac and PC) and that there is no HD content to be had at the iTunes Store (not yet, anyway)?

  • Calculating Tips with TipKalc

    Oh isn't this clever! A developer put together a series of images with pre-calculated tip calculations and bill splits so you could load it onto your iPhoto-compatible iPod as a quick reference. Each of the images offers a bill amount, a 15% and a 20% tip (plus the grand total), and the way you can split the bill and tip between 2, 3, 4, or 5 people. You just use your scroll wheel to move the price to the nearest amount of your bill and all your information is right there for you.

    Sure you could build this by yourself, but it would probably take more time and effort than you'd want to put in compared to the reasonable $5 price tag. For those five bucks, you get a lot of nicely designed graphics and all the tip amounts you'll probably ever use.

  • Apple Remote Tricks

    Stephen Korecky has posted a bunch of handy Apple remote tricks over at MacInstruct. His post shows you how to pair your remote with a Mac, how to use the remote to send your Mac into sleep mode, and more. Who knew that holding down the remote's Menu button produced the same disk-switching behavior on an Intel Mac as pressing the option key as you boot? Some of Korecky's tricks are a bit obvious (flipping through iPhoto slideshows and controlling Keynote presentations) but most of them are gems.

  • Mac gaming on the cheap: Our favorite low-cost Mac games

    With the release of Myst Online for the Mac* (and our own nagging, monthly World of Warcraft bills), we TUAW bloggers got together to discuss our favorite low-cost Mac games. Sure, those MMORPGs are fun, but $14.99/month (Warcraft) and $6.95/month (Myst) isn't. So, in the name of gaming cheapskates everywhere, here's our list of great, inexpensive Mac games (in no particular order).

    SketchFighter 4000 Alpha by Ambrosia Software. Cost: $19US. Requirements: Mac OS 10.2 or later.

    By Ambrosia Software, this shoot-em-up game features upgradeable spaceships, mean bosses, challenging levels and even a level editor. But most of all, we love the dead-on, retro, "hand-sketched" graphics. SketchFighter was designed to look like the very images that young geeks like me spent all of Jr. high school scribbling on notebook paper, and the developers at Ambrosia really nailed it. As an 11 year old, I could only imagine my creations coming to life. Ambrosia made it actually happen, and as a result SketchFighter is wicked fun to play.

  • Miglia introduces TVMini Express

    About a week ago, we posted about the budget Equinux digital TV tuner. Now Miglia joins the low-end price club having announced its TVMini Express. Like Equinux, this USB unit provides over-the-air digital TV tuning and costs only $69 (£40, €50) while the Equinux, to compare, costs €40. You get a tuner, a portable antenna, a USB 2.0 cable to connect to the computer and a CD-ROM with "software"--until recently, Miglia shipped EyeTV with their tuners but as we recently posted, they did not renew their EyeTV license.

    The TVMini Express should be available for purchase towards the end of this month.

  • Apple doesn't do it first, but they do it well: Time Machine

    Time Machine is the one feature in Leopard that I am both most excited about, and dreading. It is a fantastic idea to have the OS take care of backups automatically, and I think it will solve many common problems folks have. However, as Anil Dash points out, Microsoft did this first. Microsoft's feature is called Shadow Copy, and it just isn't as sexy as Time Machine, though it does pretty much the same thing. Anil opines that whilst it is true that Microsoft did this first Apple will get all the credit because Time Machine is so dang cool.

    Which brings me to why I am dreading Time Machine. I've said this before, but the jarring nature of Time Machine's interface concerns me. There is nothing like it on the Mac, and I am hoping that Time Machine doesn't herald the arrival of all sorts of wacky, non-standard UI treatments. Oh well, at least my files will be safe.

  • Sudos and sudon'ts

    I find that I'm visiting RixStep on a regular basis these days. Today I stumbled across this post about using root privileges and thought I'd share it with you. If you want to learn more about using Mac admin privileges, this might not be the best post to start. If you already have some familiarity with the command line and with Unix, you can learn more about what su does, how to authenticate yourself, and understand why this affects security in a handy ten-point check list. It's a little verbose, but there's a lot of good meat in the article.
