- VM2Go - manage Parallels machines, run them from an iPod and more
Filed under: iPod Family, OS, Software
One of the signs that you've 'made it' as a 3rd party (besides, of course, having great sales) is when other 3rd parties develop tools and apps that work with your app. In this vein, VM2Go from BriteMac (which we covered when it was in beta) is apparently the first 3rd party utility that allows you to manage your Parallels virtual machines, move them to an iPod, USB thumb drive or external hard drive and even run them from these devices. Various other tricks up VM2Go's sleeve include backing up VMs to DVD and a clean deletion of VMs and any associated desktop aliases that point to them.
VM2Go offers a trial download that runs 20 times, though we can't figure out a purchase price as of this writing since their eSellerate store is currently down.

Filed under: Software, Tips and tricks, Internet Tools, TUAW Tip
This whole 'electronic mail' really seems to have taken off with the internets, and we need to rely on it for an increasing amount of communication with email lists, coworkers, friends and more. While many Mail.app users have at least some sort of Rules system for filing messages into folders (or tagging them with Scott Morrison's spectacular MailTags plugin), I have recently been getting cozy with a lesser-known feature that can save a lot of time with hopping between folders. Under Mail.app's File menu is a New Viewer Window option (opt-cmd-n) that opens - drum roll please - a second window in which you can browse through your messages. This is particularly useful if you have a folder (or perhaps a Smart Folder) which you keep checking throughout the day; this way, you can simply keep one viewer open to your inbox (or whatever default location that suits you), with the second viewer set on that other folder. Go up to View > Hide Mailboxes (cmd-shift-m) for either window to give you some extra room to stretch out those From or Subject headings, and you just took another step up the ladder of email zen. Finally: have no fear if you need to quit Mail or restart - Mail remembers your multi-viewer setup and will put everything right back where it belongs the next time your get your email on.Permalink | Email this | Comments

Loyal reader Nik spotted this interesting tidbit on the .Mac tips page last week:You can also chat with anyone who has an AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) screen name and uses a chat client that supports AIM, whether on a Mac or PC. (For audio or video chats with PC users, you need Mac OS X v10.4.9 installed on your computer.)
Cross-platform video chats without using the AIM client? Eeeeexcellent. (Of course, Skype video is free and quite good, but this is cool too.) If you can, try it out and let us know what you see; we'll post screenshots if we get it working.
Update: Some clarifications coming in via the comments now. iChat <-> AIM video and audio was working with versions of AIM prior to v6, but not since. The 10.4.9 updates to iChat may restore the video functionality for the newer AIM clients. For a very, VERY thorough walkthrough of the cross-platform video chat config (including links to download AIM 5.9 if needed), check out this page at MVL Design.
Thanks, Nik!Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Apple Corporate, Apple Financial, Steve Jobs
Well, it seems that all of this may blow over...at least for Steve and the Pixar execs. Late last year, Pixar, Steve's other company which he sold to Disney, was forced to take another look at some accounting actions. One of the suggested possibilities was that Pixar's John Lasseter was given a backdated stock options bonus. This past Friday, however, Disney announced that all of the accounting in question took place before Disney acquired Pixar, and that no one currently involved with the company "...engaged in any intentional or deliberate acts of misconduct."
We don't know where this will all end up, but it looks like Uncle Steve is off the hook as far as Pixar is concerned.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Multimedia, Video, iTunes, Apple TV
With the release of Quicktime 7.1, Apple has added a nifty feature that isn't immediately apparent: Export to Apple TV. It's notable because the result is DVD-quality 720 by 404, as well as 1280 by 720 videos. That's 720p at 24 frames per second. Speculation is rampant that this points to HD movies in the iTunes store.
For now, movies converted at the above rate will play in iTunes but won't transfer to an iPod. Keep you eye on the movies section of iTunes...

Filed under: Retro Mac, Blast From the Past
May 11, 1988. The dawn of a new Apple ][gs+. Someone claiming early access to the development posted details to an online board, which was copied and forwarded and eventually posted to Usenet: "please don't spread this special information around, as apple would not be happy if this got out to the public. I will post more info as I discover it. this new machine has alot of potential!"The "inside information" that was posted contained a description of the new Apple IIgs+. Let me slip for a moment into a more excited mode: <Fangirl Rumor Mode>OMG! OMG! Have you heard? I know this guy who knows this guy who actually has received an actual Apple II GS+ and he wrote about it on one of the boards that my friend's friend was on and here's a copy of his notes about the changes for all of your readers on Usenet! Like it's got 768K of RAM including 512K "fast" RAM and 128 "slow" RAM and the sound chip no longer buzzes and there's a super Hi-Res mode and a normal 320x200 mode with 256 colors per line! And there's a built-in SCSI port on the back and the peripherals are now slot independent! I'm not sure I can swing the $1054 for the IBM MS-DOS card--but I swear that they swear that this is a real product not vaporware!</Fangirl Rumor Mode>
According to Arnold Kim, at normalkid.com, the GS+ never was released and the Apple II line was discontinued.

Filed under: Multimedia, Software Update, Apple
Here's a nice, easily overlooked tidbit from the release notes to the 10.4.9 update that we mentioned before: Apple has added support for USB Video Class cameras in iChat without the need of a third party driver a la iChatUSBCam from ecamm. A user in the MacRumors forums reports that the the Xbox Live Vision Camera (~$40) now works natively with the Mac. This should presumably be the case with other USB Video Class cameras as well, and while I would probably prefer a model from Logitech, the Xbox camera is widely available and relatively inexpensive. With iSights now unavailable this lends credence to the rumor of some sort of USB iSight replacements (or maybe Apple is just going to stay out of the webcam business altogether, given that iSights are built-into so many models now).

Update: Be sure to note that iChat in 10.4.9 only works natively with USB Video Class, not every USB webcam is Video Class.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
