  • Games coming to Apple TV?

    AppleInsider is pointing out some interesting discoveries regarding iTunes 7.1 and the Apple TV. While poking around, they've uncovered some telltale text strings within the application, including, "Are you sure you want to sync games? All existing games on the Apple TV" and "Some of the games in your iTunes library were not copied to the Apple TV."

    The Mac Dev Center takes things a step further with a complete list of Apple TV text strings, including the "game" mentions.

    Perhaps it's just synchronization, but why would you send games to the Apple TV if you couldn't play them - maybe with the remote as a controller? Or maybe there will even be - gasp - Apple TV-specific games?!?

    Let the speculation begin.

  • iTunes hints at international videos

    Reader Scott pointed out something he noticed in the preference pane of iTunes 7.1. Specifically, if you navigate to the Parental tab, you'll see several countries listed as an option for "Ratings for..," including Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, The UK and The US. We can confirm that this drop-down menu wasn't there in iTunes 7.0.

    Perhaps movies will finally be added the iTunes stores for these countries? We hope so!

    US: Pieces of the Sun (Radio Version) by Test Your Reflex
    Test Your Reflex was formed in Southern California in 2004 and was inspired by albums that spoke to a more epic, grandiose rock experience than the instantaneous thrills of the alt-metal groups that band members saw around them. Immersing themselves in albums by U2, the Cure, Roxy Music, Depeche Mode, and David Bowie, they found a direction that suited the group's outlook. "Pieces of the Sun" is a raw slice of guitar pop, colored by a bit of melancholy and synth-pop overtones. It's also our free Single of the Week.

    US: FM Radio by Joshua James
    Joshua James has a breathy twang that thinly veils his Nebraska roots. On "FM Radio," he steps out into the wilderness with just an acoustic guitar and comes up with a track that has more than a touch of real life in his poetic phrasing.     US: Boogaloo Chévere by Sonora Carruseles
    Sonora Carruseles are the Colombian kings of salsa. This is pure, unadulterated dance music where the rhythm hits you immediately and doesn't let up until the song ends. This heavy salsa is driven as much by the vocalists on the front line as it is by the congos anchoring the percussion. As you can tell by the title, this Colombian group has put a little bit of boogaloo soul into our free Single of the Week.

    Ok, so for whatever reason you just need to have the ability to encode darling little WMVs on your Mac, Flip4Mac is probably the way you'll want to go, and macZOT! makes the encoding software more appealing with a nice 35% off discount. The full-fledged Flip4Mac WMV Studio package typically runs $49, but with this offer (good for today only) the price gets knocked down to just under $32.   • HDHomeRun HDTV Mac Streaming Tool

    I first heard about the HDHomeRun on DL.TV a while back, and while it looked very interesting I was left disappointed that it lacked full Mac support. The HDHomeRun is a cool little device that contains two over-the-air HDTV tuners to receive HDTV and then stream that HD content over your home ethernet network. The streams it produces can be viewed with VLC so it it was possible, if somewhat difficult, to make it function with a Mac. Now, however, aa1979 has posted a Mac GUI to the Silicon Dust forums which makes it much easier to set up a stream. It's still far from as full featured as the Windows Media Center interfaces, and you still need to use VLC to watch the stream, but the level of hackery necessary to use the HDHomeRun with the Mac has gone down considerably. I wish EyeTV supported the HDHomeRun, though there's some hope that once SageTV gets going on the Mac (later this year) it may support this device to make a true Mac-based HDTV DVR.

  • TextMate AutoTag bundle for WordPress

    In the market of Mac users who have text to edit, TextMate has become one of the household names that we turn to the most. Likewise for the blogging world, few - if any - services come to mind before WordPress. Brett Terpstra of Circle Six Design knows this, and that is why his AutoTag Bundle for TextMate seems to be such a match made in nerdy blogging heaven.

    Brett's AutoTag bundle works with WordPress 2.1 and its Ultimate Tag Warrior plugin to present a window (pictured) containing all the tags you've used on your WordPress blog; perfect for tagging your posts on the fly and helping you to keep your tag system tidy. But one might ask: what is an AutoTag plugin without some auto action, right? AutoTag can tag your post for you by scanning what you've written and comparing it against your tag database. Simply type 'auto' and press tab to watch the magic happen. And as if that wasn't enough, AutoTag even has a command for suggesting new tags, again based on a scan of your post's content or even Yahoo's Tag Suggestion feature. With all this clever 'auto' functionality going on, let's just hope Brett's next plugin isn't called 'AutoBlog,' or we might all be in trouble.

    To give your TextMate + WordPress workflow a tagging boost, you simply need to install a UTW-RPC plugin for WordPress (available with the AutoTag bundle) in order for TextMate to access your database of tags. Setup is really simple, but be sure to download the version of AutoTag that corresponds to the version of TextMate you're running, i.e. - Cutting-Edge or the regular version available from the Macromates site.

    The AutoTag bundle and UTW-RPC WordPress plugin are open source and available from Circle Six Design.
