  • Quartz Composer Art / Screensavers

Quartz Composer was one of the coolest new technologies Apple added in Tiger. It allows designers to create some amazingly complex motion graphics with comparatively little work. (Core Animation is likely an analogous advance in Leopard). The Japanese designer Futurismo Zugakousaku has used Quartz Composer to generate some dazzling motion graphics, which can conveniently be used as screen savers in OS X (place the QTZ files in /Library/Screen Savers/). His Quartz Composer Samples page features 33 QTZ files for download, some of which are simply mesmerizing. The site is feeling the Digg effect right now, but I managed to grab several of them as well as watch his sample movie. I was quite impressed by what I saw, particularly considering the fact that he says he made each of them in less than an hour. Zugakousaku says of himself: "I want to make a work like a new surrealist of the new generation." I think he's already achieved a lot.

  • TrueDisc promises damage-resistant 'master copy' burning

TrueDisc is a new CD/DVD burning application that features "master copy" burning capabilities, for the creation of discs that are highly resistant to damage. TrueDisc (yes, the company shares the same name as its software) claims that up to 90% of a disc's data can be damaged before its software is unable to access and read it. To create a master copy, TrueDisc breaks up files into cells, adding special so-called "redundant cells" to protect the original content. That means the less data you burn to a disc, the more redundant cells that can be created, but TrueDisc promises maximum space efficiency, and the software uses a non-proprietary file format for the greatest ease of use for recovering data. The software supports burning of non-rewritable media only, such as CD-R, DVD-R, and DVD+R/DVD+R DL, and it is available for $52 for a limited time, with a regular price tag of $89.

  • Just What is Wired Memory Anyway?

If you've ever opened up your Activity Monitor and looked at the System Memory tab, you've no doubt seen something similar to the above. But if you're like me, you've often wondered just what the labels mean. Just what is wired memory, anyway? Well Alex at Bits about Bytes has a nice little article explaining just what those labels mean, how different applications (particularly virtualization tools) affect memory usage, and how to figure out if you need to add RAM to your system. Oh yeah, and wired memory turns out to be memory "used by the OS [which] is pretty much untouchable. Another application can't 'borrow' wired memory." Good stuff.

  • iTunes: Free Tuesday

Welcome to this week's edition of iTunes: Free Tuesday. US readers rejoice. There are a lot more new freebies on-offer than usual, especially in the Video section. New items include a vampire thriller, a new kids' Nick show, and reality TV. International visitors, we have free music selections for Australia, New Zealand, Canada, France and the UK. Download and enjoy.

    US Music

US: Pieces of the Sun (Radio Version) by Test Your Reflex
Test Your Reflex was formed in Southern California in 2004 and was inspired by albums that spoke to a more epic, grandiose rock experience than the instantaneous thrills of the alt-metal groups that band members saw around them. Immersing themselves in albums by U2, the Cure, Roxy Music, Depeche Mode, and David Bowie, they found a direction that suited the group's outlook. "Pieces of the Sun" is a raw slice of guitar pop, colored by a bit of melancholy and synth-pop overtones. It's also our free Single of the Week.

US: FM Radio by Joshua James
Joshua James has a breathy twang that thinly veils his Nebraska roots. On "FM Radio," he steps out into the wilderness with just an acoustic guitar and comes up with a track that has more than a touch of real life in his poetic phrasing. His gentle storytelling and the lilt of passion in his voice make him a singer/songwriter worth paying attention to. Enjoy our free Discovery Download this week.

US: Boogaloo Chévere by Sonora Carruseles
Sonora Carruseles are the Colombian kings of salsa. This is pure, unadulterated dance music where the rhythm hits you immediately and doesn't let up until the song ends. This heavy salsa is driven as much by the vocalists on the front line as it is by the congos anchoring the percussion. As you can tell by the title, this Colombian group has put a little bit of boogaloo soul into our free Single of the Week.

More freebie goodness after the jump.
