- Mathematica 6 ships

You may recall that back at WWDC'05 when Jobs announced the switch to Intel, one of the companies he invited on stage to discuss creating Universal Binaries was Wolfram Research, whose flagship product Mathematica is probably the leading desktop mathematics application. Mathematica has now reached version 6 and the new features are manifold, representing (according to Wolfram) the "most important advance in the 20-year history of Mathematica." Not having much understanding of these things beyond attempting to use it back in college to do my calculus homework for me, it does seem that there's a lot new, including Dynamic Interactivity and "over 1000 new computational functions & interface enhancements."
One downside of the new release for Mac users, however, is that version 6 remains a 32 bit application in OS X despite the availability of 64 bit versions for Windows, Linux, and various Unix flavors. Mathematica 6 is available now at a variety of different price points (education, etc.), with the standard professional version coming in at a cool $2495 for Mac.

Alright all you procrastinating Apple Devs, the Mothership has decided to look kindly upon your laziness and has extended the early registration for this year's WWDC until May 11th (it was supposed to close on April 27th). So you have another week and a half to save $300 on a ticket. Of course, it's still going to run you $1295, but considering you've waited this long, consider it more like they're paying you to go!
I can't help but wonder whether this move was prompted by lower than expected early registrations. It's hard to imagine, though, that the full unveiling of Leopard won't be a banner event.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Let's clear something up: as odd as it sounds, there really truly is a hip, fashionable and glamorous New York City neighborhood called "the meatpacking district." That's what it is: many meat wholesalers and associated businesses are located on Manhattan's far West Side, hemmed in by long-gentrified Chelsea to the north and the West Village to the south.
Mixed among the meat markets are other meat markets: hot bars like Lotus and Hogs & Heifers call the MPD home, and apparently soon so will Apple's new Manhattan store. It's expected to occupy the former Western Beef supermarket building at 401 West 14th Street (Google Maps | Google Earth links) with a massive new outlet.
The New York Post reported that Apple's lease for the site includes 32,000 square feet of space, spread across three floors of the low-rise building. If Soho is the boutique, and 5th Avenue is the Tiffany's, then 14th Street is going to be the Costco of Apple Stores (except, of course, for the bargain pricing). Personally, I'm just thrilled that there's finally going to be an Apple Store I can visit on my lunch break.

This isn't exactly a deal, but it is for a good cause. Several independent Mac developers have gotten together and are offering their products for a charity sale on May 2nd to benefit the Virginia Tech Memorial Fund. The products will sell for their normal prices, but the devs "will donate the proceeds of their sales" to the Fund. There are a good number of products being offered from a variety of developers, so if you've been on the fence about one of these applications today would be a good day to grab it.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
