  • Bandwagon iTunes backup revamps pricing plans

As Mat noted a couple weeks ago, the ambitious team at Xackup announced, then thought better of it and retracted, Bandwagon: an unlimited-storage service for iTunes backups to run over your Internet connection. Greedy fiends that we iTunes users are, with visions of multigigabyte libraries dancing in our heads, we apparently shocked and awed Bandwagon into the just-announced revamped pricing plan.

The new plan offers iTunes backup for $1 monthly, and backup + sync between two Macs for $1.50. Cheap, no? The catch: this is BYOS -- bring your own storage. At launch the service will support backup to Amazon's S3 cloudisk service, with basic FTP and Omnidrive links to follow within a month or two. The Bandwagon blog details the changes here and explains more of the why here. Considering that Xackup is also launching Xackmail (Mail.app & Outlook backup) and Neverfuget (iCal backup/sync to Backpack) tools, this company is making a serious play for Mac home/net backup customers on all fronts.

Will Bandwagon pull you onboard? I might consider it myself, and work out a "homebrew co-lo" agreement with friends or family to put a spare drive and FTP access at their place, reciprocating with the same at my place -- or just bite the bullet and start paying Amazon for disk space.

For reference, Apple offers a support page with answers to frequently asked Backup questions.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

  • Apple NAB lineup and Special Event

Macworld reports that Apple will hold a Special Event on Sunday the 15th of April during the upcoming National Association of Broadcasters trade show. There are no details as yet as to what will be announced, but one guesses the event will have to do with Apple's suite of post-production video tools. In addition, over at BDMetrics, where you can often find corporate listings for major trade shows, there seems to be an early lineup for what will be displayed at Apple's booth.

  • Emailing entire Webpages (not just links)

Here's a little-promoted Safari function that you might find useful. Safari offers the ability to send entire webpages via email. This is a nice feature to have on hand when you want to create a web archive using your gmail acccount or when you know the person receiving your mail won't necessarily click on a link. By selecting File -> Mail Contents of the Page (Command-I), Safari copies the page to Apple Mail and allow you to post it to the recipient of your choice.

The always excellent how-to site Murphy Mac offers a detailed video tutorial on using this feature, going beyond the menu selection into how to configure options in mail so that the the media attachments can be viewed. I'm also particularly impressed by his excellent choice of webpage material while demonstrating this trick's functionality.

  • Mac Cheat Sheet

    Filed under:

Remember the first rule of computer security? Not writing down all the important stuff like passwords and account names in one place? Kind of fundamental, right? Well, it looks like Apple has just about had it with people being unable to remember basic information like passwords and account names when working with them to provide support for their computers. They've created what they call a Mac "cheat sheet" with the intention that you--or more likely a mac-savvy relative or coworker--write down all these basic facts and then you carefully store the sheet away.

Unless you're the sort of person who wouldn't remember this information in the first place. So you'd probably keep the sheet on-hand, right?

Admittedly, the form contains all the information that could really help a service tech: which OS you're using, the amount of memory in your computer, and the kind of processor. But it also details your user account password, up to three keychain passwords, a password for your ISP, passwords for your email account, your work account, and so forth. This is offset by six light gray repetitions of the phrase "don't forget to hide me", which I guess immunizes Apple from losses due to security breaches.

So bottom line? The cheat sheet is a well-intentioned idea that, when used as intended, could really help during service calls, but when used in its most likely scenario will introduce unacceptable security risks.

  • Namco Interview

Gaming Bits has a fascinating interview up with Scott Rubin, VP of Namco Networks/Games--the people who brought you the iPod release of Ms. PAC-MAN. I'm not sure I agree that the iPod is a "perfect device for games", but I'm really pleased to see the selection of third-party software for the iPod grow. It looks like Namco, who is working with Apple not just on current iPod games but also for iPhone ones, will be delivering several more iPod games over time including both classic arcade titles (like "Mr. Do") and newly developed ones tied to licenses like Snoopy and Dilbert.

As for Rubin's discussion about purchase models, I have no trouble going to a computer to purchase my games but I'd be surprised if the iPhone didn't eventually offer on-the-go sales for things like games and ringtones at some point let alone buying tracks to play back on the iPod portion of the phone.

  • What should Apple do with twelve BEEEL-lion dollars?

This is the question posed by Arik Hesseldahl in today's Byte of the Apple column for BusinessWeek: what should Apple do with its $12 billion in cash and short-term investments? His suggestion: rather than spending more money on acquisitions (such those that led to Logic, Final Cut and Shake), the big A could start a venture capital fund that would help Mac software startups, and established vendors looking to port to the Mac, with seed money to get products off the ground and out the doors.
Hesseldahl points to other tech giants that run their own VC operations, among them Intel, Qualcomm and Motorola. Perhaps it is time for AAPL (back up to $87/share at today's close, erasing a good chunk of Tuesday's losses) to turn some of that spare change into "changing the world, one software company at a time."

  • EA Soundtracks to hit iTunes

If you're not getting enough of the gaming experience by, you know, actually playing games, you can now load up your iPod with tracks from your favorite Electronic Arts games like Def Jam Icon, SSX 3, Need for Speed Underground 2 and Burnout: Dominator. Because apparently you can never have enough game soundtrack in your life. Okay, I admit it. I have absolutely no clue why anyone would ever want to listen to an EA soundtrack or why they would buy one for their iPod. But if this is the music for you (and, frankly, who am I to judge), the tracks are now available for purchase on iTunes. (At least they are for US iTunes users. Europeans will have to wait a while before joining in on this unique cultural experience.) Pop by the EA Trax site for more details.

    Rawk on, Madden NFL 2007!
