- DVDSP 4.1.2 released
Apple just released version 4.1.2 of DVD Studio Pro. This new update focuses mostly on bug fixes as well as addressing compatibility problems with Toshiba HD DVD players. Two big changes include the update in the Cutting Master Format used for professional replication from CMF 1.0 to CMF 2.0 (required for High Definition DVD replication) and Disk Description Protocol from DDP 2.1 to DDP 3.0.

Valleywag is reporting that the trendy-yuppified Marina district on the north end of San Francisco will soon be graced with what will be the third Apple Store in the already high-tech city. The store will replace the Walgreens at 2102 Chestnut (there's another 24 hour location 2 blocks away), a block down from Peet's, and neighboring the Gap. The location will be 6,600 square feet, and is being designed by the same architects (Bohlin Cywinski Jackson) who designed the 5th Avenue cube. A plan for the exterior of the structure will be presented to the city planning commission on March 22nd.
Say what you will about the Marina (and those who frequent it!), it's about to get a lot more interesting.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

We've all been there- intending to paste a link to that hot new social network but instead exposing your social security number. Indeed, the clipboard can be a fickle and unforgiving mistress. After an unfortunate incident last night (which he won't elaborate on), my buddy Emory decided to pull out of the dangerous game of clipboard copy/paste. He whipped up a neat little AppleScript by the name of Clipboard Killer which will wipe the contents of your clipboard every 25 seconds and replaces it with ...
For those readers new to AppleScript, it's easy to turn this into a background application that you can set to launch on login. Simply open Script Editor (found in your Applications folder), copy and paste the code, and save the script as an application.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

DuckCall is a nifty little utility that is a one-trick pony, but it's a pretty cool trick. Every 30 seconds it takes a snapshot with your iSight camera and sets that picture as your iChat or Adium buddy picture. The author notes that it's "very crude, and consists of a PyObjC wrapper round a stand-alone binary (to get the picture from the iSight) and a bunch of AppleScript (to set the picture into iChat / Adium)." As you can see to the right (behold my thoroughly unattractive office bookshelves), it works fine on my MacBook with iChat (I didn't test it with Adium). This is a pretty neat idea for personalizing your iChats when a full video chat is not an option.

Filed under: OS, Software, Beta Beat
Well this is interesting, in the wake of all the hype over the new release of Parallels comes a potential bombshell from competitor VMware. We mentioned the first beta release back in December, but now the second beta of VMware fusion has appeared and includes the long sought-after "experimental" Direct X 8.1 accelerated 3D graphics support (news of which leaked some time ago). It also features a Rollback feature that lets you "take a snapshot of your virtual machine configured just the way you like it, so you can quickly roll back to that ideal state whenever you need to, with a single click." Of course, Parallels still has cool exclusive features like Coherence mode, but VMware's offering looks more and more tempting. Hopefully this will spur the Parallels guys to getting 3D support out the door.
The beta is available for download, but registration is required.

Filed under: Apple Corporate, Apple Financial, Apple
This is the question posed by Arik Hesseldahl in today's Byte of the Apple column for BusinessWeek: what should Apple do with its $12 billion in cash and short-term investments? His suggestion: rather than spending more money on acquisitions (such those that led to Logic, Final Cut and Shake), the big A could start a venture capital fund that would help Mac software startups, and established vendors looking to port to the Mac, with seed money to get products off the ground and out the doors.
Hesseldahl points to other tech giants that run their own VC operations, among them Intel, Qualcomm and Motorola. Perhaps it is time for AAPL (back up to $87/share at today's close, erasing a good chunk of Tuesday's losses) to turn some of that spare change into "changing the world, one software company at a time."

Filed under: Software, Features, Tips and tricks, iTunes, TUAW Tip
Last September we showed you how to keep your iTunes library on an external hard drive. While doing the same thing over an AirPort Disk with Apple's new AirPort Extreme Base Station sounds like it should more or less be the same situation, there are a couple of new catches to be aware of. Never fear, though - we'll outline what you need to know to truly snip the wires on your iTunes library.
First, in order to do this right, we recommend backing up your library before snipping any cables (we also don't recommend actually snipping any cables; they can be expensive to replace). If you haven't gotten into the backup habit yet, Scott's How to Back your music using iTunes 7 tutorial is a great place to start.
Now, on with the show.Continue reading TUAW How To: Use your iTunes library over AirPort Disk
