- iFuntastic 2.5 for iPhone brings full file browser, even more customizability
Filed under: OS, Software, Hacks, Mods, iPhone
The iPhone Alley crew are on fire with iFuntastic, their iPhone hacking and modification tool. Just over a week ago they released v2 that brought custom ringtones and reordering apps, and now v2.5 ushers in another major milestone of iPhone hackery: a full file browser and manager. If you've been waiting to dig into your iPhone, edit images and logos or get to even more serious tinkering, this is likely the tool you've been waiting for.Комментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Software, Productivity, Internet Tools, Deals
My favorite offline synching client for Backpack, the web-based personal information manager, is 40% off today at MacUpdate Promo. Whether you toss a few snippets of your daily information into Backpack or you're a heavy user with 20+ pages for all your projects, PackRat is a killer desktop client that allows you to work with your Backpack information while offline, then synchronize it all once you get back on. PackRat even offers a number of features that Backpack doesn't, such as deleting all completed items at once, a visual calendar when creating reminders and AppleScript / Automator support.
I have to admit, while I was happy to buy a license at $24.95, I've always thought PackRat's price would hit home with a lot more customers at $15. If you agree, today's your chance - the MacUpdate Promo 40% off sale for PackRat places it right at $14.95, making it an even better deal for Backpack users.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Desktops, Rumors, Apple, Mac mini
I got a suprising number of "hurrahs" yesterday when I mentioned how afraid I was that the Mini might get killed before I was able to buy one with Leopard pre-installed on it. Rumors about today's Apple event (which we'll be metaliveblogging, so stay tuned) are everywhere, and one that I've heard pretty often is that the Mini's last days are upon us.
Personally, that's really disappointing-- even if the Mini isn't quite the performer or the bastion of beauty that the iMac or the Mac Book Pro is, there's always room for the little computer that could (could convert the Windows faithful, I mean). So that's why I'm so happy to hear that Macenstein says the Mini won't be killed today-- instead, he's heard it'll get a nice upgrade: "The mini will sport a 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, a 100GB hard drive, SuperDrive, and cost $699." He also suggests it'll get a design refresh, which I'm totally fine with. However you want to play it Jobs, just don't kill my Mini!
Is Apple's smallest desktop headed for the junk heap, or is a brand new version headed for the Apple store? We'll find out when the press conference starts in about half an hour from now.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

So what happens when someone releases a functional but extremely slow NES emulator? Two of the finest iPhone hackers spend all night re-writing the thing to make it blazing fast and include multi-touch support. Behold the optimized NES App created by NerveGas with help from NightWatch/Patrick Walton. You can download and run the app today and the source will shortly be rolled into the official SVN. iPhone NES: the game for big hearts and small thumbs. Thanks to Bricolage and NerveGas

Filed under: Accessories, Hardware, Software, Video
Erica took a first look at Elgato's Turbo.264 USB video encoder last month and found it to be a mixed bag. While it is indeed a powerful accessory to many Mac user's video encoding efforts, it's only compatible with apps that use QuickTime for encoding and export, so HandBrake and VisualHub die-hards are out of luck. Still, if you use QuickTime itself, Elgato's products (such as EyeTV) or any other QuickTime-compatible video encoding apps, the Turbo.264 is a fantastic companion that is sure to make your G4, G5 or even Intel Mac jump for joy when encoding video.Комментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Steve Jobs, Apple, Blogs
Man, I head out for a few days (I've been away at BlizzCon, reporting for our online gaming cousin WoW Insider), and Fake Steve got burnt. Not by us, of course-- we made a promise to not care about the identity of Fake Steve, and we still don't. But we're not the only site on the Internet, and the real Fake Steve is out there. So the question then becomes: now what?
FSJ himself claims it's not over, though he is taking a short break. Forbes is going to sponsor the blog, although it's not clear what "sponsoring" means in that context. All we care about is that we still get Fake Steve-- the wacky ramblings and sparkling insights of Steve Jobs. Is that what we'll get? As Gruber points out, it's probably not. FSJ's last post is not in the voice of Steve Jobs; it's in the voice of someone pretending to be him. The curtain is falling already.
There's an interesting parallel to this, and it's newsworthy, too: Bree, as of last Friday, is dead. Lonelygirl15, the young woman who took over YouTube and then was discovered to be the product of an imagination, was killed in the final online episode of her story. When Lonelygirl15 was outed, I was just as intrigued as I was with the mystery of FSJ-- who is she and what is this really all about? But when the mystery was revealed, I grew bored with it, and a look at the last Lonelygirl video tells me that I didn't miss much-- the stuff that attracted me in the first place (an interesting form, a simple, mysterious conceit) has long since been abandoned for a huge, boring cast and a formulaic plot (a group called "The Order" features prominently). Once Lonelygirl admitted she was fake, she became so.
So the worry with Fake Steve is that the same thing will happen. Gruber thinks we're in denial, but we're not-- when a newspaper editor told Virginia there was a Santa Claus, was he denying the truth? We want Fake Steve-- a witty, insightful blog from a Steve Jobs who pretends that he's real, sounds like he's real, and therefore is real. We just worry that now that the bubble's broken, Fake Steve won't stick to his guns and stay real.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Here's a shot of President Bush's advisor, Karl Rove, using his iPhone.
If you're playing TUAW iPhone Bingo, you'll notice that we haven't completed a row yet, but we're close. So far, we've placed an "X" on:
- IM on the iPhone (unofficially, of course)
- Take a screencap (with a bit of hacking)
- Apple is sued over something with the iPhone (this took longer than we expected, actually)
- iPhone is hacked
- iPhone will blend
- iPhone gets games

EA hasn't quite held up on their end of the Mac gaming bargain, but id has moved a step closer. At QuakeCon over the weekend, they announced that the first game to use their id Tech 5 engine (shown off at WWDC) will be called "Rage," featuring driving in expansive, outdoor environments. id's John Carmack apparently told QuakeCon that he wanted to break with the claustrophobic hallways of Doom and Quake 4, and so Rage will feature lots of "...bright, sunny outdoors."
No date yet, of course (isn't that the way it always works?), but Rage is scheduled for a simultaneous release on all platforms, including our favorite, the Mac.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Software, Odds and ends, Internet Tools
BBEdit 8.7, the latest version of the triple-A HTML editor, has been released. New in 8.7 is "code folding" (which I could have sworn was in BBEdit before, but I guess not), which allows you to show or hide ranges of text while editing. Revised Preferences and support for Ruby, YAML and SQL is new as well.
Also, "the Glossary" is now called "Clippings." The idea is that you can capture and re-use common bits of text - like a powerful, persistent Clipboard. And, because I know I can't be the only one who really enjoys freshening up my Dock, I'll point out that there's both a new application icon, and new document icons.
8.7 is a free update for 8.5 and 8.6 customers. If you haven't picked up BBEdit yet, you can try out the free demo here.
