- iLife/iWork tutorial little touch
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Software, Odds and ends
This isn't earth-shattering, nor is it breaking news but sometimes you just have to step back and enjoy the little things in life. I was watching a few of the iLife '08 and iWork '08 tutorials (posted about here and here) to get a feel for some of the new features. I clicked on a movie, watched it, and then clicked on another. Pretty straightforward, but then I noticed a little check mark had appeared next to the tutorials I had already watched.
Nice touch, Apple web ninjas!Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Media Temple, a well known hosting provider, has recently rolled out a beta version of their control panel made just for the iPhone. Judging from the number of folks who sent this to us (thanks to all of you!) there seems to be a large, and until now, untapped market of people who want to be able to register a domain from anywhere.
Aside from registering domains you can also restart services, pay your bill, add email addresses, and submit a tech support ticket. I'm not a Media Temple customer myself, nor do I own an iPhone (and we all know how I feel about iPhone specific web apps) but I must admit this looks slick. You can access the iPhone version of Media Temple's control panel here.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Odds and ends, iMac, Apple, iPhone
Sunny Wu sent us this mockup of what a Project RED/U2 iMac might look like, considering that Apple has put a little black in their originally all-white iMac design (it's based on the comparison the 37Signals guys did). It's true that the new iMac shares a little more similarity with the iPhone, although not as much as it could have.
What do you all think of the iMac redesign? Most of the murmuring I've heard is lukewarm, and I tend to agree-- why bother, exactly? Yes, it looks just as cool as the old iMac (which is still very cool), but does a black Apple logo and a black back really make that much of a difference? Thin is nice (and that keyboard is awesome), but this is a desktop, and I'm not worried about a little bulk on my desk.
And here's the other question I have, though I think I already know the answer: Why are we still suffering that strip of metal across the bottom? Shouldn't the iMac's screen just go ahead and take over the rest of the front? I know, I know, it has to do with the insides, and all the room the ports and other guts need to function, but even if Apple made it a little thicker to fit everything in, I still think I'd rather see an iMac that was nothing but screen from the front. What do you all think?Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Odds and ends, Widget Watch
The Warp Speed Calculator widget isn't useful at all, unless you happen to be a captain of a Starfleet vessel, but I'm OK with that. As you might expect this simple widget calculates how fast, in km/s, a particular Warp Factor is (from Star Trek: The Next Generation). I can also calculate how long it'll take you to travel distances based on your Warp Factor.

Filed under: Software Update, Apple, Mac Pro
I bet the Mac Pro felt a little left out of all the excitement yesterday, since the iMac got all the press. Worry not, Mac Pro, today Apple is updating something that impacts you! That's right, Mac Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.1 has hit the street. This firmware update, 'adjusts fan behavior in the Mac Pro.'
As with any firmware update it is very important to read the directions carefully, so don't go saying I didn't warn you.
Thanks, Jt Hollister.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Hardware, How-tos, Odds and ends, Apple
Ars Technica has a short guide up to treating your iPhone, laptop, and iPod batteries right. Contrary to popular belief, it seems the best way to wear out a battery before its time isn't spending too many charge cycles-- it's heat. Charge cycles are equivalent to normal wear and tear on batteries-- it's better to charge your batteries up from partial charge rather than let them run all the way out, and then charge them fully. But heat is a much bigger factor, and considering that most laptops (or "notebooks," as Apple likes to say) run hot, batteries lose their capacity comparatively fast.
The best way to store a battery, says Ars, is partially charged and in the fridge. In fact, one of their batteries still had a 95% charge after 2.5 years, just because most of that time was spent in about 40 degree temperatures at half charge.
Of course, I buy batteries not to keep them in the fridge, but to use them, so I'd like to see (and have seen, don't get me wrong) progress in lifespan and capacity rather than a battery next to my Guinness in the fridge. But if squeezing every little bit of your battery counts, it sounds like you can't go wrong by being cool.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Software, Productivity, Internet Tools
Yep, it's that time again boys and girls: Bartlomiej Bargiel has updated iGTD with yet another unassuming point release that heralds some great new features. While you can simply run the Check for Updates command from the application menu to see the big list o' changes, here are some of the highlights for those still on the fence or stuck at work reading this on a machine other than their own. iGTD 1.4.5.5 brings:
- Opening the Quick Add window to easily edit tasks you've added from other apps
- Multiple badges in the Dock icon for Inbox, due today and flagged item statuses
- Flag and task mode (pending/waiting for/maybe) buttons in the Quick Add window, with keyboard shortcuts
- F-key trick adds Vienna RSS support to its growing list of compatible apps for creating tasks
- Ability to completely disable iCal synching so users don't accidentally toggle it
