  • TUAW Back-to-School Giveaway Day Two

    Filed under:

Day two of TUAW's back-to-school giveaway, and today's prize is a red tumbler from the mothership! This food-grade beverage holder is relatively safe from viruses, like your Mac. Unlike your Mac, you should wash it from time to time. Like an iPhone, it is meant to be cradled in the hand. Unlike the iPhone, it doesn't smudge. Then again, you aren't really wiping your ear on a mug, are you? We bought this in January at the Company Store in Cupertino.

Same deal as yesterday: enter by leaving a comment on this post. Again, limited to the 50 US states, you must be 18 and only one entry per person per day, please. Each day we'll open a new post for comments from 5AM-11:59PM. To enter, leave a comment on that post (make sure it appears, check your email). To see full rules, go to our TUAW Back-to-school giveaway page.

Stay tuned for tomorrow's prize: something mightier than the sword.

  • AirPort Base Station Update 2007-002 for Mac

    Filed under:

Do you have an AirPort Base Station? Do you enjoy applying updates? Well then, buster, today is your lucky day. Apple has just released an update by the name AirPort Base Station Update 2007-002 for Mac. You'll need any flavor of OS X 10.4 to get this update, as well as an AirPort Extreme or Express. This update, 'includes general fixes and compatibility updates for the following applications: AirPort Utility, AirPort Disk Utility, AirPort Base Station Agent.'

I know our very own David Chartier has encountered many issues with AirPort Disk, so here's hoping this update fixes it.

  • BlueFlash: Bluetooth for the Apple II

Never say die to the old Apple II. A hacker named Vinchysky has melded a Disk ][ controller card with a Xilinx FPGA, which in normal-person-speak means he's enabled you to plug a Bluetooth dongle into an Apple II.

The hookup itself is basically just a USB connection, so you could conceivably transfer in any files you wanted from either a USB drive or a Bluetooth connection to any PC (or any Mac, or any iPhone... or anything with Bluetooth at all... Mind boggled yet?). The writeup of how Vinchysky created it is interesting, while a little on the technical side. Then again, the guy is working technical magic, so we'll let him have his jargon.

And the best part is that we're told this thing will be offered for sale-- he's planning to send them out at a tidy $160, within the next few weeks. If you've got an Apple II sitting around that you're just jonesing to get hooked up to a Bluetooth device, this is what you've been waiting for.

  • TUAW Talkcast #2: Inside iTuesday

    Filed under:

Here's your chance to relive last week's product introductions from the perspective of four of your favorite bloggers. Last Thursday's live talkcast features a roundtable chat with Scott McNulty, David Chartier, Chris Ullrich & yours truly discussing the new iMacs, iLife '08, and iWork with some surprise guests. The MP3 download is available here, in our RSS & iTunes feed and direct from Talkshoe (download or streaming).

Our apologies for the audio quality on this one; we had some gain issues that took a few minutes to sort out. We'll be sure to have all our mics in a row for this Thursday night: same bat time, same bat channel.

  • ecto3 alpha released

Adriaan Tijsseling has been tweeting about the development progress of ecto3, his powerful Mac blogging app, for some time now. After a sneak peek and more teaser screenshots, Adriaan has generously offered an alpha version for us to play with. In other words: it's pre-beta, which means stuff is very, very likely to go wrong; play with this at your own risk. Speaking of risk, however, there is certainly an upside to testing out this ecto3 alpha: it uses a completely different set of data and storage from the current ecto2, so you don't have to worry about blowing away your old settings or accounts.

That said, let's get on to the good stuff: what's new. First of all, ecto3 is apparently a complete rewrite from the bottom up. It has a new rich text editor based on Apple's own Editable WebKit, which offers a number of handy new writing abilities (such as the slick nested list in the ecto3 alpha announcement post). Another major new development which we had previously heard of is a new plug-in architecture for ecto3, allowing anyone to add support for more blogging systems, integrate media and even text formatting such as Markdown. It's a great step towards allowing ecto3 to become a blogging hub that can do just about anything for anyone.

Speaking of media, I also noticed that there is a new media browser that has access to all the typical stuff, such as iPhoto and Aperture photos, and even your movies. There are all sorts of new goodies in ecto3, so definitely poke around to see all the hard work Adriaan has put into this so far.

If you download the alpha, be sure to read through Adriaan's ecto3 alpha announcement post for a few tips and gotchas with getting the ball rolling. There are a few minor things he hasn't gotten to yet, such as adding all the sites to ping when you publish a post, but a simple 'add defaults' button will get you squared away easily. Once it's finished, ecto3 will surprisingly be a free upgrade for existing registered users (a single license is a mere $17.95). Until then, however, be sure to swing by the support forums to post bugs and discuss ecto3.

  • TUAW Back-to-School Giveaway Day One

    Filed under:

Perhaps calling it a back-to-school giveaway is bad. Whether or not you're going back to school right now you're eligible to win one of our prizes. To be honest, there's nothing particularly scholarly about the prizes either. It's just an excuse to give away 14 rounds of prizes. For the next 14 days (excluding weekends) TUAW will give away 14 different prize packages. Some "packages" will be a TUAW shirt with some Ambrosia gear. One day will indeed be an Apple lunchbox, as seen at the Apple Store in Cupertino, aka the Company Store. And one lucky day will feature an iPhone as a prize.

The catch is that each day is a surprise, and each day is a completely new entry period. Again, limited to the 50 US states, you must be 18 and we insist on one entry per person per day, but with 14 chances your chances are that much nicer. Each day we'll open a new post for comments from 5AM-11:59PM. To enter, leave a comment on that post (make sure it appears, check your email). To see full rules, go to our TUAW Back-to-school giveaway page.

Today's prize? A TUAW shirt (we've got sizes XL, L, M and S) and an Ambrosia "swag pack" containing a shirt, hat and deck of playing cards. Tomorrow's prize? Oh, you almost had me. Stay tuned.
