  • Apple Numbers Gallery

    Numbers Icon

Yesterday Apple announced and released its much anticipated spreadsheet application called Numbers.

Numbers is described as “spreadsheets the Mac way,” with the application offering significantly more functionality past just simply charting information and numbers. It’s a solid mixture of information organization, number calculation, and page layout/design.

The interface for numbers if very intuitive and is very easy to learn. Apple has quite a few Numbers tutorials on their website to help you learn even faster.

Below is a gallery of screenshots of the new Numbers interface. Enjoy!

  • Photo Management

iphoto In the wake of the iPhoto announcement, especially its shiny new features and (in my mind) much more appealing interface, I thought I would take another look at Aperture.

This really does make sense: I work with professional creative types, and they convinced me that I ought to be using Aperture over iPhoto. I had some money to burn that month, so I picked up a copy - and watched it kill my MacBook Pro. I was shocked - CPU usage through the roof, free memory gone, every other app - including my desktop pager - stalled if not dead outright - it was ridiculous. Here I am, running what Apple is billing as its top-of-the-line for portable graphics professionals, with plenty of RAM and processor to burn, and this supposedly-crucial app won’t really work. (Although my code compiles like lightning, I will grant.) As if that weren’t enough, Aperture insists that some of my rolls were taken years before they were - as much as three years - and won’t seem to let me change that.

aperture Disgusted with the interminably-whirling blue ball of not-really-progress, I switched back to iPhoto, and started doing even the most minor retouching in Photoshop. Now, though, I would rather use an app I’ve already bought than fork over still more for iLife ‘08. I’m sure there are reasons for and against any of the big options, but I don’t know enough about any of them, really, to tell.

What do you think, and what do you use? iPhoto? Aperture? Something else, like Lightroom? Favor me (and the other photo newbies around here) with your wisdom in the comments.

  • Oh, it's like an iPhone for your house

New iMac and iPhone“Oh, it looks like an iPhone.”  That was my wife’s opinion when she took a look at the brand new iMac.  I thought the black bezel looked out of place on a Mac.  I didn’t understand the thought behind the design.  When my wife mentioned the iMac’s similarity to the iPhone, I thought she hit the nail on the head.

This new design — the aluminum and glass — is simply an extension of the iPhone.  People who never considered a “Smartphone” have been willing to make a jump to the iPhone because the iPhone just seemed so darn easy to use.  When people walk into an Apple Store and now see this large black and silver machine, they will make the connection to that super-easy to use iPhone and be more likely to try out the extra large iPhone-like computer.

Personally, I’m not too crazy about the design of the iMac.  But then again, what other options do I have for mid-range Apple desktop?  This iMac design is not for those who will buy an Apple product no matter what.  This design is meant for those who are Mac-curious.  I expect a halo effect from the iPhone to increase sales of Macs, and with this new glass and aluminum iMac, Apple will sell plenty of Macs to people who are drawn to the familiarity of this machine.

  • Apple makes major updates to both hardware and software

Today Apple announced and updated a whole slew of products in both their hardware and software lines.

Updates include a new iMac, new keyboard, updated iWork, updated iLife, and more. It was certainly an exciting day and arguably more exciting than the past few major WWDC or Macworld events.

Check out the full details after the jump.

  • Apple announces new keyboard…and officially makes the wireless version lame

Today Apple announced a brand new shiny keyboard. It’s sculpted out of beautiful aluminum is freakishly thing.

But with all the hype they managed to leave out some major differences in the wired vs. wireless versions.

    Apple Wired/Wireless Keyboard

The top keyboard in that image is the wired and the bottom is the wireless/bluetooth version.

    Yes, those are to scale.

No, the new wireless version does not have a keypad…or any of the new “shortcut” keys.

The new wireless version is effectively just a cut out of a laptop keyboard.

While I think Apple has created a magnificent new product here, I think they’ve made a horrible move by only offering these options. It’d be one thing to offer a wired or wireless version of each (as I can see the smaller version coming in handy for travelers), but it’s a different thing to only offer a wired version to get a full keyboard.

I’m crossing my fingers here that in the coming months they’ll offer a new wireless version of the full keyboard. Until then I’ll just have to keep using my now horribly outdated and inferior “old” white keyboard…that I purchased 2 months ago.

  • Giants store offering 'free' iTunes downloads

Giants back to schoolIf you’re a fan of the San Francisco Giants and iTunes, you should know that sfgiants.com — the official online store for the San Francisco Giants — is offering five free iTunes downloads to the first 1,000 customers to spend $75 or more on select back to school merchandise.

Qualifying items include book covers, note cubes, calendars, backpacks, t-shirts, hats and more. (Because every student needs a Barry Zito 2-pack Team Wristband.)

The offer expires on August 28 at 11:59 p.m. ET or while supplies of iTunes gift codes last. Of course, if the offer is limited to 1,000 customers, how could supplies of the gift codes not last unless they don’t actually have 1,000 codes?
