- Microsoft Office 2008 for the Mac delayed until January 2008
Filed under: Software
Craig Eisler, General Manager of the MacBU and proud Canadian, contacted TUAW with some news about Microsoft's much anticipated Universal release of Office, Microsoft Office 2008 for the Mac. Craig let us know that Microsoft has pushed back the release of Office 2008 for the Mac to make sure that the suite is up to snuff.
Office 2008 for the Mac will be released for manufacture in December of this year for a US release of mid-January 2008 (just in time for Macworld 2008).
Clearly updating a large suite like Office is always a major undertaking, and focusing on getting it right is great, however, January 2008 is 8 months away from now. I asked if there would, by any chance, a public beta in the coming months. Sadly, there will not be one. It would seem if you want to get your fix of Office 2008 you'll have to check out this gallery of screenshots Microsoft provided to us during Macworld 2007.

I'm a devoted Quicksilver man myself, but the venerable LaunchBar seems to have started the whole keyboard launcher trend and retains many committed fans. Just updated to version 4.3, Objective Development has added a number of new features. In particular, Instant Open allows you to execute a command without hitting return, while Instant Send allows you easily to send files to LaunchBar (both of these are possible with Quicksilver, though the implementation is different). There are other improvements to the calculator, iTunes support, and more.
While I can't imagine switching myself, I've heard some on the Mac web suggest that LaunchBar is more stable than Quicksilver and so might be worth it for some. LaunchBar remains $19.95 and a demo is available.

While Meebo is still working on optimizing their web-based chat service for the iPhone, a new player by the name of eBuddy is joining the ranks of FlickIM, JiveTalk and Trillian Astra. Already doing business like Meebo as a web-based, multi-network chat service, eBuddy has just announced an alpha version of their iPhone-optimized chat app that is heavy on the features, though certainly a departure from mimicking the increasingly standard iPhone-ish UI. With support for AIM, Yahoo! and MSN (which I thought was now called Windows Live Messenger?), as well as text styling and the all-too-handy tabbed chatting, eBuddy definitely offers a powerful iPhone chatting experience - if you're willing to wait for the web app to load, that is.
Users can simply visit ebuddy.com on their iPhone to access the optimized app. Alpha tester beware though: eBuddy took a surprisingly long time to load even over my AirPort Express Wi-Fi, which makes me worry about testing it over EDGE.
