- Airport Extreme not using Gigabit speeds?

Along with all the other updates in the Apple Store on Tuesday, Airport Extreme got a nice one-- according to the specs on the page, they're now offering Gigabit ethernet speeds. Or are they? ComputerWiz went out and grabbed two of them right away, but no matter what he tried to do, he couldn't get the base station to move past 100Mb speeds.
There could be a number of things happening here-- I don't have the knowhow to judge whether they did everything they could or not, but the attempt seems reasonable to me, and if you have to mess with settings that much on an Apple product, something is wrong. They also say that Apple had to go into the back room to get the Airport Extreme, so it's conceivable that they grabbed the wrong one-- except that CW claims the box itself said Gigabit.
So something is screwy here-- is it possible that Apple shipped Gigabit Airport Extremes that weren't actually Gigabit?

Like so many others armed with iFuntastic's new iPhone file browser, Jimmie Geddes at iPhoneology has been going iPhone-spelunking. Apparently, Geddes has made some interesting discoveries in the form of images buried in the file system that have suggestive names. First is widget.png, found in: / System / Library / CoresServices / SpringBoard.app/. SpringBoard is the app that actually powers the iPhone's home screen and displays all those pretty little square icons, suggesting that this generic widget icon could be used for widgets that don't provide their own (hint hint, future iPhone widget developers).
Next up are pictures named spotlight-full.png and spotlight-keyboard.png, the former pictured in this post. Again, I agree with Geddes that these are very suggestive of Spotlight being included in a future iPhone update. With all the push Apple made with the search paradigm by releasing Spotlight in Tiger in 2005, I'm pretty surprised the iPhone lacks any kind of a search function, let alone at least the abilities to search certain things like contacts that other phones have been able to do for years.

A few minutes after I had ripped the shrink wrap off of my shiny new iLife '08 DVD, gotten it installed and was playing with iPhoto '08, I got a little message from the folks at Apple: iPhoto '08 (aka iPhoto 7.0) already has an update. In addition to its appearance in the app itself, the update also showed up in Software Update and at Apple's website.
This update to iPhoto, which measures 8.8MB and brings the application to version 7.0.1, "addresses issues associated with publishing photos from an upgraded library to .Mac Web Gallery," according to Apple. So, if you're like me and you've already installed the new iLife '08, then fire up iPhoto or Software Update and get updating. After all, who doesn't want their issues addressed? Hard to believe you could run a whole video site just by posting vids of people unboxing new gadgets, but I'll be darned if the guys at Unboxing haven't gone and done it-- their latest video shows off the new iMac, and I have to say (a little ashamedly) that I was glued to my screen the whole time. I don't know if opening up something Apple didn't make would have the same effect, but going through that box piece by piece, with all the little custom packaging and that incredible keyboard... "vicarious thrills" indeed!
Every time I crack open an Apple product, I'm always thrilled with all the little touches, and this time is no exception-- I love the two booklets, labeled "Everything Mac" and "Everything else," as if Mac was its own universe, and the way the iMac itself is nestled in the box and packaging just feels so perfect. It is disappointing that the Apple Remote doesn't stick to the side any more, however-- it's hard to believe Jobs would consciously choose not to put the little magnet in there, so maybe someone in Cupertino is facepalming when they realize they forgot it.

MacBreak Weekly is one of my favorite podcasts. Listening to that crew wax ecstatic about the Mac industry, delve into ratholes where no man has gone before, and sometimes even toss a shout out to TUAW helps me get through those long errand trips around town and actually enjoy cleaning the house. Something I missed until last night, however, is that someone has actually started up a MBW Picks site to help keep track of everyone's software and website picks from each show. Either a fan or a friend, Paul Mayson apparently runs the site and logs and links the picks from each show so you can easily check them out at your leisure. As of this writing, this new site goes back to MBW show number 45, and Mayson seems to be staying on top things after that.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

It seems like this news has been around for a while, but we'd never heard it, and it's definitely worth taking a look at. Alcor, developer of Quicksilver, the little launcher that does everything, quietly mentions on the Blacktree forums that Quicksilver will go open source and Leopard only with the next release.
What does that mean for Quicksilver's users? Probably not a lot, although with a few interested developers on board, it'll probably mean quicker updates and more responsive bugfixes. Even Alcor says in the thread that while bugfixes and updates are planned for Leopard, he has no idea when they'll actually be released, and an open source app would probably make specific fixes faster.
As for a timeline on making it open source, Alcor doesn't promise anything too exciting on that end, either. He does say that the OS version of Quicksilver will be for Leopard, so we're looking at least at October, if not later. But if Quicksilver is going open source, it likely means that one of the Mac's best applications will only get better.

Ars Technia is reporting that Apple is about to add television and movie downloads to the UK iTunes Store, possibly within the next two weeks.
Customers in the US have enjoyed this service for a couple of years now, while our friends overseas have heard this promise several times. If Ars' source is to be believed, the licensing issues have been worked out and the system is in place. All that's left to do is "...flip the switch."
Keep your eyes peeled.

Apple has touted iMovie '08 as a complete rewrite of iMovie, but it would seem that not everyone is thrilled with it. Sure, iMovie '08 has some interesting features, but it lacks many things that the more mature codebase of iMovie HD 6 offers like:
- No plugin support
- No themes
- Multiple audio track support is gone
- No timeline view

The other day, I discussed how to record audio on your iPhone. Several people wrote in asking whether they could have their recordings show up in voicemail, so I scouted around a bit. I discovered that voicemail is stored in ~/Library/Voicemail and that it uses an sqlite3-compatible database to manage that information.
Last night, I put together a shell script that allows you to trick the iPhone into thinking that amr files added to the voicemail folder are actual voicemails. To make this happen, I ported sqlite3 to the iPhone (You can download a copy here). I also wrote a csh script, which you can download here and a time utility, here. The reason I wrote the script in csh rather than bash (both of which appear in the standard binary distribution kit) is just that I'm more familiar with csh.
To run the script, supply it with the amr file as its one argument, e.g.
copy2vmail foo.amr. The script copies the amr file to the voicemail folder and updates the voicemail database as if the voicemail were received at the current time.To force voicemail to update and re-read the database, enter the phone application and quit it by holding down the home button for 4-8 seconds. Re-enter the phone application and, with luck, you will see the recording as new voice message from "VoiceRecorder".

In the iPhone Google Maps application, it's pretty obvious how to zoom into maps. You double tap the screen. The map readjusts, zooming further in. So how do you zoom out? Sure you can pinch your way back but there's a far easier way. Use a single multi-touch tap instead. That is, tap with two finger at once.
Separate your fingers so it's clear that you're making two contact points and...tap. Google Maps obediently zooms back out, one zoom stage for each multi-touch tap. Give it a try. It's a great tool to bring into your Google Maps vocabulary.

Sunny Wu sent us this mockup of what a Product RED/U2 iMac might look like, considering that Apple has put a little black in their originally all-white iMac design (it's based on the comparison the 37Signals guys did). It's true that the new iMac shares a little more similarity with the iPhone, although not as much as it could have.
What do you all think of the iMac redesign? Most of the murmuring I've heard is lukewarm, and I tend to agree-- why bother, exactly? Yes, it looks just as cool as the old iMac (which is still very cool), but does a black Apple logo and a black back really make that much of a difference? Thin is nice (and that keyboard is awesome), but this is a desktop, and I'm not worried about a little bulk on my desk.
And here's the other question I have, though I think I already know the answer: Why are we still suffering that strip of metal across the bottom? Shouldn't the iMac's screen just go ahead and take over the rest of the front? I know, I know, it has to do with the insides, and all the room the ports and other guts need to function, but even if Apple made it a little thicker to fit everything in, I still think I'd rather see an iMac that was nothing but screen from the front.
