- Playing with the iPhone's accelerometer
Filed under: Multimedia, Hacks, How-tos, Developer, iPhone
Yesterday, we saw what Medallia was doing with touchscreens a few months ago, and today, we've got hot off the press news about what they're up to with the iPhone's accelerometer. Erling has found a way to pull the raw data off of the iPhone's LIS302DL, a 3-axis accelerometer that's currently used for noting when you're looking at Safari vertically or horizontally. A few hackers, like the folks behind Tilt, have been able to catch the iPhone noting the change itself, but this is the first time, I believe, that we're seeing live data come right off of the unit at a high sampling rate, enabling Erling to pull off the magic seen above.
And the best part: source code is up on the site. iPhone programmers, start your engines-- we've got a whole new interface to work with.

Filed under: iPod Family, Odds and ends, Apple
We've finally found something that can kill an Apple product: 30 minutes of highway traffic. Sam O. wrote in to tell us what happened to his brother's 2G Nano-- his grandmother apparently found it in the driveway, and decided to pick it up and put it on the hood of his car. He didn't realize this had happened, however, until he'd driven out for some errands, so after swearing profusely for a bit, he got back in the car to follow his route and see if he could spot it.
It's hot pink, obviously, so he did find it-- just in time to see an 18-wheel semi run it over. The gory results are below. We've seen Apple products take quite a licking and keep on ticking before, but apparently sitting on the highway for 30 minutes in Boise, ID will shut them down for good. Good to know.
Of course, the real question is: did AppleCare cover it?

I'm going to mark this one rumor for right now, but there's an interesting thread going on over at MacRumors Forums that suggests that the new iMacs may have a stealth upgrade. When they were announced a lot of folks were disappointed with the included Radeon HD 2600 Pro graphics card, however, some people have discovered that (at least running Windows in Boot Camp) their machines appear to be reporting that the GPU is actually an underclocked mobility Radeon HD 2600 XT, which is a more powerful chip. This would not be the first time that Windows has revealed hardware that Apple wanted hidden, as several machines were discovered to have draft 802.11n wireless networking chipsets in that way before they were later activated by Apple. Many are expressing hope that some future update or some ATI specific tool might unlock the hidden power of the GPU, but at this point it seems to be wishful thinking.

Filed under: Software, Productivity, Internet Tools
Watch out Delicious Library, you finally have some competition on the way. Koingo Software's upcoming Librarian Pro for Windows and Mac will bring some interesting new features to the media cataloging table. While its standard UI doesn't look quite as flashy as Delicious Library's (though it features a 'Gallery mode' that displays everything by cover art that the company hasn't posted a screenshot for), Librarian Pro allows users to catalog PC hardware and software in addition to books, movies, music and games. In fact, it can scan your hard drive (I assume both Macs and PCs) to automatically catalog your software. Users will be able to create smart collections for organizing their stuff any way they please, and Librarian Pro allows for multiple media databases to help keep different collections separate (say, one for your home stuff and another for your work-related books and software). Speaking of staying organized, Librarian Pro can also display a panel of contacts from Address Book to show you who borrowed what, when and how many.
[Update: By the way, I forgot one thing: to help facilitate switchers, Librarian Pro can import from Delicious Library, DVDpedia, Bookpedia, CDpedia and Gamepedia.]Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, OS, Software, Apple, Leopard
When I posted the new System Preferences pane in Leopard earlier this week, I was a little disappointed to see that while the desktop had changed (here it is online, if you want to make it your own already-- thanks, Ryan D!), the screensaver had not. I figured this is because Apple wasn't bringing any new screensavers to the fold in Leopard, but that was premature-- here's a "Falling Photos" screensaver sent to us by Christian BS (thanks!). I would be very, very surprised if it didn't automatically pull photos from iPhoto for you, as apparently "you can display any photos this way." Also notice the clock-- we're told that it can be displayed on any screensaver you choose.
And he also sent us this video of the new Help system, which has a Spotlightesque bar in it that will actually let you search for clickable options. That's terrific-- no more browsing through a Help system to find a tutorial about how to increase the text size: in Leopard, you'll be able to type "text size" into the bar, and automatically get the commands right within that menu.

Don't forget, our weekly talkcast will be kicking it Wednesday style tonight at 9:30 pm ET. We'll be introducing TUAW's newest bloggers (ooo!), welcoming special guests (aah!) and giving away a couple of delightful prizes (wow!). You need to register for a Talkshoe PIN prior to the show, so go ahead and do that now. We'll wait. Might as well download the Gizmo Project SIP client too; that way you can dial in to the show without paying SkypeOut or toll charges, or burning your cellphone minutes (you can always listen for free via the Talkshoe client, and if the stars align you can chat back with the embedded Shoephone VoIP tool).
Thanks to the fine folk at Embraceware, our two trivia contest winners tonight will receive licenses for Awaken, the iTunes alarm clock tool, at the end of the show. Awaken is also up on MacZot today at a $5 discount, if you don't trust your Mac trivia mojo. Besides, if you buy a license now, you can set your alarm so you remember to join the talkcast! See how it all fits together?
Thanks Jerry & Hakim for tonight's giveaway!Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, iPod Family, Rumors, Apple Financial, Apple
We all know that Apple is gathering the tech press for a Special Event (notice the capital letters) on September 5th, and it is pretty clear it has something to do with iPods. The rumors are swirling, and helping Apple's stock price.
Goldman Sachs has told its clients that this event might introduce the much ballyhooed full screen video iPod. Goldman suggests that people might want to buy some Apple stock, which in turn caused Apple's stock to jump $5 upwards on trading.

I did some traveling this summer (with two toddlers, so don't be envious). Certain that I'd need to conduct a search or two, I bookmarked my destinations on my iPhone, and you can do the same. Just follow the steps:
- Launch Google Maps.
- Enter the zip code of your destination city.
- Once it has been found, create a bookmark.
- Repeat for each stop you'll make.
Now, when you're jonesing for a venti iced green tea latte in a strange place, simply launch Maps, click Bookmarks and then your location. You'll be sippin' in no time.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

- TUAW Tip: endo's keyboard shortcuts rock
Filed under: Software, Productivity, Internet, Internet Tools
Hi, my name is David Chartier, and I'm an RSS-aholic.
[your collective response: Hi David]
The last time I refreshed my newsreader was... well, probably a minute or two ago, and then 30 minutes before that. You see, I'm obsessed with news, and I've been using some sort of a newsreader for around three or four years now. Since I began writing for TUAW and Download Squad, I've probably tossed my OPML (an exported list of your RSS feeds) into more newsreaders than I can imagine, and one of my greatest loves has always been Adriaan Tijsseling's endo, which we've mentioned a few times before on TUAW. While I typically use NetNewsWire as my main reader, I'm giving endo a thorough run-through again as it has really matured into a great, stable product, and it has a lot of pleasant surprises and unique features that make sifting through large amounts of feeds and headlines a pleasure. In fact, with how well things are going, I wouldn't be surprised if endo upset my newsreader balance, at least for my regular reading. See the rest of the post to find out why...

Filed under: Multimedia, How-tos, Freeware, Macbook Pro
A few months back, we wrote about reader Dylan's iSight autocapture project-- he rigged up the code to have his iSight on his MacBook Pro snap a photo every time the lid was opened (and even released all of his work as open source). At the time, he mentioned eventually combining all of the photos together into a timelapse video, and seven months later, here it is.
Unfortunately, he says the Sleepwatcher daemon he was using doesn't work as of 10.4.10, so the project is over until it gets updated, if ever. But he did share with us how he compiled the images together into a timelapse-- he punched out a Perl script (which is reprinted after the jump) to rename all of the pictures into sequenced filenames, and then squished them together with Quicktime's "image sequence" feature. Very nice.Continue reading Timelapse of iSight wakeup captures

Filed under: Features, Troubleshooting, Ask TUAW
It's time again for Ask TUAW, our weekly feature where you ask the questions and we make up the answers... er, I mean carefully research and determine the optimal solution. This week we'll be tackling questions about printing from OS X to a printer connected to a Windows box, AutoFill in Safari, problems with a FireWire hard drive, using a MacBook Pro power adapter with a MacBook, and more.
As always readers' suggested answers are most welcome! Please leave your questions for next week in the comments.Continue reading Ask TUAW: Windows Printing, AutoFill, FireWire HDs, MacBook power adapters and more

Since we last mentioned the Skim PDF reader and annotating application it has grown considerably and the newly released version 0.7 adds bevy of new features. Since that early release back in April they've added considerably to the markup and searching tools (including live search of the document with context in addition to searching just the annotations). There's also greatly expanded AppleScript support and a presentation mode. The crazy keyboard shortcut system we complained about before has also been simplified and improved. In short, Skim is getting better by leaps and bounds and is definitely worth another look if you regularly need to read and markup PDFs. While you can still only highlight PDFs with selectable text (i.e. PDFs that are not just scans), the anchored note and box features make marking up even image PDFs easier.
Skim remains open source and thus a free download from SourceForge.

Filed under: Humor, Found Footage, iPhone
Our sister blog Engadget is crazy about all things gadgety, which is why they covered the boatload of Nokia announcements today. Those announcements included the phone in the video above. Look a little familiar to anyone? Now, I'm not usually one to accuse companies of copying Apple, product development is a long process and different paths can lead to the same destination. That being said, when questioned during the press event about how this phone looks a little like the iPhone (i.e. exactly like it) Nokia's Exec VP said, "If there is something good in the world then we copy with pride."
At least they are honest.
This phone should be available sometime next year, unless Apple Legal stops it.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Most developers these days use a version control system to keep track of changes in their code, and Subversion is probably the most popular. While there are some slick Mac clients available, some folks have wanted a solution that integrates with the Finder like the Windows client TortoiseSVN integrates with the Windows shell and the SCPlugin brings exactly that. While they still have some features on the wish list (e.g. repository browsing), the developers think the newly released version 0.7 is "ready to be your one-and-only Subversion interface." It offers contextual menu control for common operations as well as icon badging to help you see file status visually.
SCPlugin is open source and a free download from Tigris.org

Update: I hear ya. I didn't realize at first that Versions is a no show so far. So all the more reason to check out SCPlugin!Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Multimedia, Software, Apple, Blogs, Developer
Bruno Fernandes of Twisted Melon software has an offer for you: get educated about the problems facing our world today, and get free software for it. He recently saw The 11th Hour, a film produced and narrated by Leonardo Dicaprio about global issues in 2007, and was so affected by it that, like the New York Times, he considers it "essential viewing."
And he wants to give his program, Mira, to the first 50 people who go see the movie and send him a scan of their tickets. Mira usually runs $15.95, so depending on the theater you go to, you'll probably be saving a few bucks on a pretty good Apple Remote application.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Odds and ends, iPhone
This post will initially have a limited audience--residents of New York City--but I think the idea behind it is interesting enough that other folks might benefit as well. Khoi Vinh has whipped up a cool NYC subway map for the iPhone that takes advantage of the iPhone's thumbnail system for photos. Basically, he's cut up the MTA subway map in such a way that you can pan across the map with the forward and back buttons. The map tiles also overlap a little bit on all sides to make panning more natural. So taking this idea, apparently originally borrowed from Mike Essl, I figured other iPhone aficionados might well whip up similar maps for their own particular circumstances.

Let's say you've just announced a really controversial iPhone unlocking method based in software. Do you: (a) provide step-by-step screen shots, showing what your product can do; (b) offer a carefully crafted demonstration piece, highlighting your product in action; or (c) create a completely unwatchable video with an incomprehensible voice over and put it on your corporate blog?
Tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of dollars are at stake. What option do you pick?
It's not as if an average video camera cannot be placed on a pile of books on a chair with a fixed focus setting. It's not as if you can't spend 5 minutes writing out a rough script and speak slowly. But after being brought to international attention in the media, don't you think that if the first video turned out poorly, you'd at least re-shoot it? Even if you had to buy or borrow another $400 or $500 iPhone?
We at TUAW have watched this new video from the iPhone Unlocking blog. And let's just say: we're not very impressed.
