- Music from iPhone ads now available - get working on those YouTube parodies
Filed under: Audio, Humor, iTS, Software, iPhone
In addition to that wonderful iFuntastic app that allows you to add ringtones and rearrange your iPhone's apps (even after this week's 1.0.1 software update), iPhone Alley has also made available what is sure to become a staple of iPhone culture and parodies the world over: the 'official' music from the iPhone TV ads. After doing some digging, iPhone Alley's Michael Johnston found the song used in the ad - Perfect Timing by Orba Squara (iTS link) - so he chopped out what sounds like the exact portion and made it available for download. Head over to the iPhone Alley post for more info and to download a copy - then get to work on those YouTube parodies!Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Multimedia, How-tos, Odds and ends
As the resident Xbox 360 fanboy I had reservations about touching this one, but my Mac love triumphs over all and so I bring you news of a cool tutorial on streaming media from your Mac to a PS3. This method is basically built around the MediaTomb open-source UPnP media server. The tricky part is installing MediaTomb on your Mac with fink and setting it up for the PS3 from the command-line. But once you do, you should be able to stream audio, video, and pictures from your Mac over the network. Needless to say, I haven't tried this myself, but I am intrigued by this note: "Currently MediaTomb does not fully support the XBOX360 as it acts differently from the PS3, but the code is already there to make it work in future versions." I guess we 360 users will just have to make due with Connect360 for now.

Okay here's something to keep in mind if you're planning on taking your iPhone overseas. Apparently, a boing boing reader decided to use his iPhone in roaming mode in the UK and Ireland, but didn't bother to figure out how the $0.005/KB rate would translate into real-world usage. Well two weeks of "sporadic AT&T EDGE network usage off and on mixed with wifi when available" came to $3000!
After the story got legs on the 'net, AT&T apparently decided to waive the charges. It seems that AT&T offers an unlimited international data plan for Blackberry users, but not one for the iPhone. Nonetheless, there's a lesson here for international travelers. Keep to wifi when overseas if you don't want to get stuck with massive roaming charges.

Filed under: Enterprise, OS, UNIX / BSD, Leopard
Not being an enterprise IT guy, this story went a little past me, but it's apparently big news to some. With Leopard, Apple has now joined Sun, IBM, and HP as the only four OS vendors to achieve UNIX 03 certification. This is significant because it opens up some interesting possibilities for Apple in enterprise applications once XServes with Leopard Server ship (presumably in October). It's likely that third-party UNIX enterprise software vendors will now be more willing to write for (or port to) OS X. Further, as the InfoWorld article notes, this will make it possible to code for the Mac and easily port "to RISC big iron" just by recompiling. I suspect this will also make a lot of folks in academia happy as well.

Here's one for you globetrotting iPhone fans out there. The Cool Gorilla Talking Phrasebook is a nifty little iPhone site that offers a foreign language phrasebook in five European languages (French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish). It presents you with cascading menus in various categories (travel, food & drink, etc.) to find the phrase you need. Then not only does it display the phrase ("Sprechen Sie Englisch?"), it also embeds an MP3 of a native speaker saying the phrase in the other language (at least so it sounded to me; I only tested the German one).
In any case, this looks like it could be really convenient for travelers. Let me offer a word of warning, however. You'll probably only want to use this via wifi, as there's a story making the rounds about AT&T's outrageous international roaming fees.

You'll have to indulge me in a little nostalgia here. Some of my earliest Apple memories are of crowding around an Apple II playing Oregon Trail. I couldn't help but think of that when I saw that our gaming blog brothers at Joystiq have uncovered an exciting new "edutaiment" title coming in December. Called WolfQuest, this wolf "simulator" is being created by the Minnesota Zoo to allow me (er, I mean, kids) to live out the dream of being a wolf on the great plains. If the pricelessly corny preview video is to be believed, the Minnesota Zoo and Eduweb will apparently achieve something beyond EA's capacity: cross-platform network play with simultaneous release on Mac and PC.
Alas this lupine sim won't be out until December 2007, but now you really have something to look forward to this Christmas. And by the way, if you want to relive those Oregon Trail days, it's possible in a Dashboard widget.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Each August, we anticipate the start of the MacMod Challenge, a time for case modders to compete for bragging rights and glory (among other prizes). Last year's entries included the iMac mini LCD and the Tonka iMac. In fact, did the 2005 challenge produce the first iMac with "Intel inside?"
The list of prizes and judges for 2007 are yet to be announced , but a glance at the information page reveals a new category: "iPhone mod."

US Music
US: Born Losers by Matthew Good
Each week, we find a track from an artist or a band who's on the cusp of success and bring it to you, for free, as our Single of the Week. Matthew Good's brand of reverie and disconcerting personal analysis in song has made him a favorite in Canada for years. His newest album, Hospital Music, is an especially riveting portrait of a man who's been to the edge and back. You won't regret it.US: Alegria by B-Side Players
Each week, we find a track from an artist or a band who's on the cusp of success and bring it to you, for free, as our Single of the Week. San Diego groove collective the B-Side Players have been together for more than a decade, setting progressive political messages to a movable feast of reggae, Latin jazz, folklorico, and ska. "Alegria" is a track from the B-Side Players' new album. It's a celebratory track with horns blazing and a great call-and-response middle section.US: Omigod You Guys by Annaleigh Ashford, Dequina Moore, Laura Bell Bundy & Leslie Kritzer
Our Discovery Download puts the focus on a different genre each week, offering up a free track we think is worth your attention. This week, we're featuring the opening song from the Broadway production of Legally Blonde. This candy-coated musical has been a surprise hit, winning over both the tweens and the critics (no easy feat) with its portrayal of Elle Woods, the California blonde who defies expectations by heading to Harvard Law School.Continue reading iTunes: Free Wednesday

Texterity is a company that specializes in digitizing popular magazines. Today, we came across their iPhone portal. It's pretty cool - Touch the magazine you'd like to read and you're presented with several options, including the table of contents and a search function.
The fun is in displaying each page in a grid. Touch any one to make it go full-screen. From there, you can resize and move between pages easily. We like it.
Now I can cancel my subscription to "Everyday with Rachael Ray."Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

I purchased my iPhone on a warm, summer evening. Soon it will be exposed to a New England winter with sub-zero temperatures. How will it perform?
Apple lists an official "nonoperational temperature" of -4° to 113° F (-20° to 45° C). Minus 4°F is entirely possible in my neighborhood. Does this mean my iPhone won't work?
These guys found out by placing an iPhone in a freezer with an ambient temperature of -20°C (-4°F) for about 30 minutes. The good news is that the iPhone performed all functions perfectly with a surface temperature around -10°C (14°F). The bad news: It won't work with gloves. Prepare for cold hands this winter.

We've mentioned a few screen capture and screencasting apps here recently, but interest in finding new and shiny tools for the job still seems high. There are a couple of possibilities on the porting and development front that might excite the screencast community:
First, Jing Project developer TechSmith - long a dominant vendor for Windows screencasting tools - has indicated that further Mac development is in the cards: the Mac plans page says "...we are actively pursuing a Mac version of Camtasia Studio" and evaluating a release of SnagIt for the Mac. I've used Camtasia on the Windows side and I like it, which makes me optimistic for the Mac version's future. You can sign up for email updates at the TechSmith Mac page, or follow the feature request link if there's something you can't live without.
On the other side of the fence is Adobe's Captivate 3, a high-end screencasting and presentation tool for Windows that's aimed at instructional designers and training applications. While it's pricey, casual users can leverage it to create podcasts or 'casual learning' environments quickly and easily. There isn't an official roadmap for Captivate development on the Mac yet, but Adobe representatives were clear in a recent conference call on the product: if you want to see Captivate come to the Mac, let Adobe know via the company's feature request form.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:
http://www.tuaw.com/2007/08/01/want-to-see-a-mac-version-of-captivate-let-adobe-know/#comments - AAPL hammered yesterday on iPhone production rumors
Tuesday was a rough day for Apple investors, as shares dropped precipitously from post-earnings-report highs of $148 a share down into the low $130s. Most of the credit/blame for the selloff is being attributed to a rumor floated among traders and on a posting at TheStreet.com that Apple was cutting back iPhone production by 50% off the company's original plans.
Most of the potential sources later disavowed the information. Considering that there has never been an official production target other than the "10 million phones by 2008" number (note also that a production cut was not discussed during the earnings call), longtime Apple stock watchers on the Mac Observer forums characterized the bear run on AAPL as a "deliberate hit," executed by unscrupulous persons who have positioned themselves to take advantage of the drop in value to shore up their holdings.
Remember, AAPL investors, it's a marathon, not a sprint.
