- Playing Google Video on iPhone
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Video, Tips and tricks, iPhone
Sure, we'd all love to watch Flash-based videos on the iPhone, but until Apple actually implements Flash in MobileSafari, everything but YouTube (with its builtin player) is off limits. Or is it? Check out this little trick, in which you can use the "Download for Video iPod" option on Google video to watch almost any video instantly.
Now, my guess is that this trick presupposes a few things, first of all that you have a network connection from the iPhone that can stream video instantly. Also, I'm not quite sure where the video itself gets stored-- is there a temp directory in MobileSafari that would store this stuff? I doubt that the video itself would get added to your iPhone's videos library, but that may be the case.
At any rate, if you've got the connection (and maybe the space) for it, this is an easy, no-jailbreak way to watch any Google videos (or any other iPod-formatted web videos, I'd guess) that offer themselves up for download.
Thanks, Kit!Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Hardware, Multimedia, Software, Hacks, iPhone
The iPhone application community continues to amaze me-- this time, Engadget's got the heads up on an iPhone video conferencing system, made possible by not only a cool little piece of code (designed for a C4 contest) that fetches an iPhone's camera input and feeds it out to another iPhone via a webserver, but also these ingenious mirror settings that work as a little periscope around the phone, and let you both see the image on the front while the camera on the back grabs yours. Wild!
The Ecamm folks are old hands, apparently, at the ingenious use of mirrors around an Apple camera, but this definitely tops anything I've seen in the past. Just an amazing hack, both in terms of software and hardware. Unfortunately, the source (for either hack) isn't available yet, but they promise that something is coming soon. In the meantime, just bask in the glow of what these iPhone guys are capable of.

Filed under: Cult of Mac, Odds and ends, Apple
Quality shirts for Apple fans can sometimes be hard to find on the web. Call me crazy, but the standard-issue black "GEEK" shirts don't quite cut it for me; I hate black as a shirt color because it gets way too hot in the summer, and these kinds of designs are typically bland and uninteresting. Insanely Great Tees is a newer entry in this space, offering some clever and creative pro-Apple t-shirts. Panic, makers of apps like Transmit and CandyBar, also offers one of my favorite shirts in their Goods section called the Spinner (scroll down, I can't link to it directly. Grr). It's subtle Apple nerdery that will likely catch only the eyes of those who know what it is.Комментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: iMac, Apple, Mac mini
Personally, I crave speed. No, not the kind that can often be purchased on some local street corner in that part of town on the wrong side of the tracks. No, I'm referring to processors, front side buses, RAM and other factors that go into calculating the raw, unbridled, number-crunching power of the latest and greatest Macs.
No doubt you are aware that Apple recently released an updated version of its flagship prosumer desktop iMac as well as an updated Mac Mini too. The new iMacs feature changes both external and internal with increases to the clock speed of its Intel Core Duo 2 processors as well as a switch to the faster Santa Rosa chipset. Yes, that all sounds great but what does it mean in terms of the new iMac's ability to crunch those numbers?
Well, according to Primate Labs' tests on the new 24" iMac, as featured at Apple Insider, it doesn't help a great deal unless you're using one of those math-intensive apps like Photoshop or Aperture. In that case, according to the article: "If you're running memory-intensive applications you'll certainly notice an increase in performance with the new 24-inch iMac. Heck, the fact that the new 24-inch iMac supports 4GB of RAM while the old 24-inch iMac supports 3GB of RAM might be enough to convince you to get one." Good point. More RAM is a good thing.Continue reading Meet the New Macs, A Little Faster Than the Old Macs

Filed under: Software, Internet Tools, Blogs
Adriaan Tijsseling has been tweeting about the development progress of ecto3, his powerful Mac blogging app, for some time now. After a sneak peek and more teaser screenshots, Adriaan has generously offered an alpha version for us to play with. In other words: it's pre-beta, which means stuff is very, very likely to go wrong; play with this at your own risk. Speaking of risk, however, there is certainly an upside to testing out this ecto3 alpha: it uses a completely different set of data and storage from the current ecto2, so you don't have to worry about blowing away your old settings or accounts.
That said, let's get on to the good stuff: what's new. First of all, ecto3 is apparently a complete rewrite from the bottom up. It has a new rich text editor based on Apple's own Editable WebKit, which offers a number of handy new writing abilities (such as the slick nested list in the ecto3 alpha announcement post). Another major new development which we had previously heard of is a new plug-in architecture for ecto3, allowing anyone to add support for more blogging systems, integrate media and even text formatting such as Markdown. It's a great step towards allowing ecto3 to become a blogging hub that can do just about anything for anyone.
Speaking of media, I also noticed that there is a new media browser that has access to all the typical stuff, such as iPhoto and Aperture photos, and even your movies. There are all sorts of new goodies in ecto3, so definitely poke around to see all the hard work Adriaan has put into this so far.
If you download the alpha, be sure to read through Adriaan's ecto3 alpha announcement post for a few tips and gotchas with getting the ball rolling. There are a few minor things he hasn't gotten to yet, such as adding all the sites to ping when you publish a post, but a simple 'add defaults' button will get you squared away easily. Once it's finished, ecto3 will surprisingly be a free upgrade for existing registered users (a single license is a mere $17.95). Until then, however, be sure to swing by the support forums to post bugs and discuss ecto3.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Remember those iWood cases for iPhone we found the weekend of the device's launch? They may have just missed their original July shipping date, but the iWood for iPhone is now ready for its close-up. Available in Beech, Oak, Padouk, Cherry, and Walnut, these look like well-designed cases that fit an iPhone like a glove. Prices do indeed start at €60 (about $82.10 USD), but that's only for the Beech; all other cases are €70 (about $95 USD). A monogram or message engraved on the back is an extra €10 (about $13.60 USD), with a matching dock case for €20 ($27 USD) and protective screen for €10. Wordwide shipping is available via priority mail and FedEx.

Filed under: Software, Productivity, Internet Tools
Adium, the reigning king of 3rd party multi-network chatting on the Mac, has been updated to v1.1, but don't be fooled: even though it appears to be a minor x.1 update, there's a pretty significant list of changes here. Tabs seem to be all new, with the ability to move the tab list to any side of the chat window (top, left, right, etc.). Customizing Adium's menubar icon has also gotten a lot easier, now that it is an official xtra for which you can download new icons from AdiumXtras.com. DirectConnect over AIM - the feature that allows you to simply drag pictures into iChat windows and have them display in-line during a chat - should also work more reliably, and it is automatically initiated when needed now. Rounding up the list of major changes is a new ability to import iChat accounts, statuses and chat transcripts, helping Adium to become your central chatting hub.
Of course this isn't all, so knock yourself out with the complete list of changes if you're feeling adventurous. Otherwise, simply start up Adium to receive the auto-update notification or head over to Adiumx.com to download a fresh copy, and be sure to donate to the Adium crew (check the bottom of the page) for their fantastic work on a great chat app.

Perhaps calling it a back-to-school giveaway is bad. Whether or not you're going back to school right now you're eligible to win one of our prizes. To be honest, there's nothing particularly scholarly about the prizes either. It's just an excuse to give away 14 rounds of prizes. For the next 14 days (excluding weekends) TUAW will give away 14 different prize packages. Some "packages" will be a TUAW shirt with some Ambrosia gear. One day will indeed be an Apple lunchbox, as seen at the Apple Store in Cupertino, aka the Company Store. And one lucky day will feature an iPhone as a prize.
The catch is that each day is a surprise, and each day is a completely new entry period. Again, limited to the 50 US states, you must be 18 and we insist on one entry per person per day, but with 14 chances your chances are that much nicer. Each day we'll open a new post for comments from 5AM-11:59PM. To enter, leave a comment on that post (make sure it appears, check your email). To see full rules, go to our TUAW Back-to-school giveaway page.
Today's prize? A TUAW shirt (we've got sizes XL, L, M and S) and an Ambrosia "swag pack" containing a shirt, hat and deck of playing cards. Tomorrow's prize? Oh, you almost had me. Stay tuned.Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:
