- iPhone Software version 1.0.2
That's right, fellow iPhoners, iPhone Software version 1.0.2 is now available via Software Update in iTunes. This release, and I quote, is composed of 'Bug fixes.'
Not too much to go on there, but I'm updating my iPhone right now.Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Retail, iPhone
Michael sent us news of yet another iPhone case, this one made by Noreve. It looks pretty nice, and it's interesting that they created a flip that goes down instead of up-- they say that the camera is still usable with the case on, which is super nice. The colored cases aren't selling yet, apparently, but the black cases are in stock at €42.99.
And while my personal choice is probably to go with one of those cool wooden cases, if you really want leather, you'd be crazy not to take a look at the Vaja cases. Like TUAW's Dave Caolo, I've got a nice one on my iPod, and it is excellent. Like the Noreve cases, they're a little pricey but if you're going go all out and buy an Apple cell phone, you might as well go all out on the case, too.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

I know our friends in Europe have been anxiously been awaiting news on when the iPhone (did you know Apple made a cellular phone? It is true!) will arrive on their shores. The Financial Times is reporting that Apple has reached a deal with three different providers:
- T-Mobile of Germany
- O2 in the UK
- Orange of France
An official announcement is expected to come from Apple and these carriers in August.
Thanks to everyone who sent this in.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Humor, Odds and ends, The Woz
Who says hybrids are slow?
Woz was recently ticketed for pushing his Prius to 104 m.p.h. on California Interstate 5. His excuse was that international traveling had him thinking in kilometers per hour, not miles. The judge thought this over, then handed Steve a $700US fine.
Why was Woz in such a hurry? Perhaps he had a date with Kathy.
Thanks, Phil!Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, iMac, Apple
I have to give it to Doc Mac-- when he first posted that Apple would have to change their "You can't be too thin or too powerful" tagline for the new iMacs, I laughed and dismissed the idea. Sure, taken the wrong way (really far away the wrong way), "you can't be too thin" could be seen as a sad state of affairs on healthy self-image in the world today. But no one actually took it that way.
Did they? The Alliance for Eating Disorders Awareness (which sounds to me like a joke, but probably isn't) called Apple out on it, and now, as Macenstein reports, Apple's changed it. A story like this will (and should) give a serious test to the conspiracy theorist inside you-- and it should also give your BS meter a good workout. Apple changes taglines all the time, and there's no reason to suspect that the press release had anything to do with this change.
But then again, the picture hasn't changed at all. Did Apple actually decide that you can be too thin?Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Thanks to Microsoft Office Live Communications Server I send a lot of time logged into Microsoft Messenger for Mac. Overall I have fairly positive feelings towards Messenger, but there was one thing that really burnt my biscuits. though to be fair it wasn't really Messenger's fault. Ever since installing Safari Beta 3 on my Mac closing any Messenger window would result in the program freezing, requiring a Force Quit to make it usable once more (I assume some change in WebKit was throwing Messenger for a loop) . Luckily, Microsoft Messenger for Mac 6.0.3, released today, fixes this issue. 6.0.3 also "includes improved performance during file transfers and improvements to Kerberos authentication. It also introduces support for the Danish, Finnish, and Norwegian languages."
Sadly, my two major gripes with Messenger:
- No ability to set a note while using a corporate account
- The long winded 'don't give your credit card numbers to people on chat'

Filed under: Odds and ends, Internet Tools, Retro Mac
It would seem that today is retro theme day on TUAW, at least for me that is. Jordan saw my last post about the System 6 theme for Wordpress and he let me know about his retro themes for RapidWeaver. You can pick from System 7, System 8 (my first Mac ran 8.6, ahh the memories), or even Be (which isn't an Apple OS, but it was created by an Apple guy, so it counts).
Each theme costs $4, though there is a System Bundle that'll get your both System 8 and 7 themes for $7.50.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Odds and ends, Steve Jobs
He's not a pro athlete or a rock star, but Steve Jobs has been inducted into a hall of fame: The California Hall of Fame. He'll join 12 others, including Ansel Adams, Willie Mays and The Duke (that's John Wayne, kids).
Do other US states maintain their own halls of fame? I haven't heard of such a thing before.
Congratulations to Steve and the inductees of 2007.

Filed under: Software, Internet Tools, Blogs, iPhone
Mint is an excellent web stats tracking app from Shaun Inman with a powerful, extensible plug-in architecture. The iPhone is an excellent... well you know the rest of that one. While these two things might not have much to do with each other at first glance, a plug-in and a hack have brought us one step closer to having a more minty iPhone experience.
First up is a new iPhone Pepper (aka - plug-in) for Mint that formats your stat panes into a single column for better viewing on MobileSafari. Simply install it via the typical Mint procedure, activate it and *boom* - this new pepper stays out of your way when using a real desktop browser, but auto-detects MobileSafari and displays the proper single-column formatting when you're on the go. The drop-down pane atop Mint's admin panel even works, offering quick access to panes way down below with only two taps.
Next up on the list of iPhone Mint-ification steps you can take is adding a full-blown Home screen button for Mint, courtesy of iPhone Apper and what looks like the easiest way to get ssh/sftp installed on the iPhone yet.Continue reading Mint and iPhone: Two great tastes that taste great together

Filed under: Hardware, Cult of Mac, Odds and ends, iMac, Apple, Apple History
When we first got tipped this story (by RP-- thanks!), I was like "Oh boy, another guy who found a Newton on eBay and calls himself a Mac collector." But no, this guy is the real deal. He's got 100 Macs in his basement, including 30 Mac Classics and 18 original iMacs, as well as both a Lisa and a 20th Anniversary Macintosh. And these aren't just sitting around on shelves with cords all over the place-- oh no. These are set up just as Jobs would want them to be-- booted, running, cleanly placed, in an immaculate workspace, gently lit from above. If there's a Mac heaven, it's in this guy's basement in Missouri.
The guy, named Jeremy Mehrle, says he started buying them when he was single to fill the space in his house. I don't know if he charges admission, but if so, I'd pay.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

DeskLickr is a fantastically well named app that epitomizes all that is right with Mac development. Simply it downloads a photo from Flickr and sets it as your Mac's desktop. You can tell DeskLickr to limit itself to a certain Flickrstream, tag, or group.
DeskLickr will randomly select Desktop images for you, and if you don't like it you can tell the app to never use that image again. DeskLickr can be set to automatically select images, or you can manually get a new image. DeskLickr displays a windows, which you can close, with a link to the photo on Flickr and tells you who took the picture (as seen to the left).

Filed under: Accessories, Bad Apple, Apple
When I saw the new Apple keyboards I knew one had to be mine. I'm a huge fan of my MacBook's keyboard, and the new Apple keyboard is a MacBook keyboard you can attach to any number of Macs, what could go wrong?
TUAW reader shak forwarded a link to this Apple Support Discussion in which several other people are encountering the same problem. Do not be fooled by this discussion's 'Solved' status, as reading through the discussion makes it clear that this problem is being encountered by many folks.
TUAW readers, is anyone else out there seeing this behavior? As I wait for Apple to fix this issue I'll be reading the comments here hoping someone has a solution.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: iLife, Software, Cool tools, Productivity
Whether you have a good reason for wanting to maintain more than one iPhoto library or your collection simply became un-browsable long ago, Brian Webster's iPhoto Library Manager is your answer. This slick little utility was mentioned briefly in an Ask TUAW back in May, but to summarize: iPhoto Library Manager makes it painfully simple to create multiple iPhoto libraries, keep them anywhere you want, automate them with AppleScript and Automator, switch between them with a single click and even set one library as the default. But it doesn't stop there - the features I've already listed are available in a free version, but registered users get to enjoy the ability to create library shortcuts for opening straight from the Finder, copying photos (and preserving all their metadata) between libraries, merging libraries and copying photos from multiple libraries into a folder for synching with an iPod. To top all this off, the new v3.3 brings iPhoto '08 compatibility and some other goodies.
What does it cost for this multiple iPhoto library goodness? To gain the more powerful features and give Webster his due, iPhoto Library Manager costs a mere $19.95 from Fat Cat Software.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Cult of Mac, Odds and ends, Retro Mac, Apple History
Mad props to my parents for keeping our basement an Apple museum! Aside from a pristine Apple //c (with monochrome monitor), vintage Apple ][ ,and Mac SE/30 (with a color monitor card) they kept most if not all of our Mac and Apple programming books from my youth. A few games even survived, although my addiction to Wasteland forced my dad to ship several of the more fun games to my French cousins. So I took some quick pics and made a vintage Apple books and software gallery. Enjoy the trip down memory lane-- and if any of the authors of these books are around, let us know in the comments.
Some of my favorites:
- Chipwits - one of my favorite edutainment titles ever (and the original authors are trying to bring it back)
- Jeeves - before he hit the web he was your personal assistant
- Adventure Construction Set - taught me a lot about game design
- Using HyperCard - oh how I miss HyperCard
- The Elementary Apple - notable because of the binding, which was really useful when trying to type in programs
- The Halley Project - who didn't freak out when they heard their Apple start talking?
For some reason my copy of Racter is MIA.

Filed under: Software, Productivity, Internet Tools, iPhone
Yesterday my co-blogger Dave Caolo was lamenting the fact that there's no easy way to get his iPhone and Google Calendar to sync (although purchasing Spanning Sync is certainly an option). While it is true that the iPhone's Calendar app only syncs with iCal on a Mac (or, via this trick, Entourage as well), I replied to Dave's woes with: who needs sync, anyway?
I am a happy iCal/iPhone/Google Calendar syncher, thanks to Spanning Sync, but I realize that one man's cup of tea is another man's grubby water. For those that would prefer to simply stick with Google Calendar for all their calendaring, the service actually scales incredibly well for an iPhone. This isn't an iPhone-specific UI or portal like so many other companies are launching. Rather, it seems to be their streamlined UI designed for most mobile phones. Either way, the list of upcoming events looks great, and all you need to do is visit the standard calendar.google.com on your iPhone to get redirected.Continue reading TUAW Tip: Google Calendar works well on your iPhone
