  • Customer laptops stolen from Apple Store

Security is job number one here at TUAW. Well, irreverent enthusiasm is job number one, but security is in the top ten at least. That's why this report of a break in at Seattle's University Village Apple store hits so close to home, even though my home is in Philadelphia.

Thieves apparently cut a hole in the ceiling and dropped into the back room where repaired Macs were quietly waiting to be reunited with their owners. Sadly, those reunions will most likey never happen. That's right, those cads stole all the laptops in that room, as well as a bunch of iPhones. I can only hope that those Macs were setup to make it a little difficult for the thieves to get their hands on the personal information contained therein (though knowing Mac users as I do I imagine those machines don't even require a password to login).

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

  • Fewer prepaid alerts after iPhone 1.0.2 update?

Now that the iPhone 1.0.2 update is out and growing its installed base, do any of you prepaid users notice a difference in the number of "You Last Transaction Cost $0.00" messages? Maybe it's just me but I'm getting the sense they've been cut back significantly. If you have a prepaid account, let me know whether this latest update has affected your useless message count.
How has 1.0.2 affected your alerts?
No change as far as I can tell
    Too early to tell
    Definitely cut down on messages
    Don't know
    Prepaid? Who goes prepaid anyway?

  • Want to blog for TUAW?

    Filed under:

Apple news never rests, but sadly humans need to sleep at least 2 hours a night (at least that's what I get). In an effort to bring you the best Mac news as quickly and accurately as possible we need some new blood here at TUAW.

Can you name all the cats that OS X versions have been named after? Do you know how to make your Mac do the darnedest things? Are you aware that Apple also makes computers? Then you might have what it takes to join our team of happy bloggers here at TUAW.

We'll be accepting applications until September 7th, so send the following things:
    • A brief bio
    • 3 samples of posts written in TUAW's style. One should be a review of something, another an opinion piece, and the third can be whatever strikes your fancy (existing blog posts cannot be used, this has to be new material)
    • Your current Mac setup
    • Your contact info
To apps-at-tuaw-com in plain text (no attachments, please). Notice that we are looking for plain text emails, folks. Sending an attachment is a sure way to take yourself out of the running.

We're looking for general bloggers as well as people who have an intense knowledge of a particular Apple technology (AppleScript, QuickTime, Final Cut, what have you). Generalists and specialists are both welcome!

And yes, this is a paid position (please be over 18 years of age).

  • Widget Watch: YouTube

Before you say anything, I know - YouTube is the last thing you need to have lying around at the flick of a mouse or stroke of a key. I just couldn't stop myself from blogging this because it shot to the top of Apple's popular Dashboard widgets chart, and it really is well done. The YouTube Dashboard widget allows for searching YouTube, displaying Just Added, Most Discussed, Featured and Most Viewed videos, and you can even condense it for those times when you want to at least appear like you might be getting work done. Clicking a video opens a larger window in the Dashboard to watch it, and therein lies one catch. For some odd reason you aren't presented with YouTube's video controller; just a pause/play button. Another bummer is that you can't log into your own account to rate or mark videos as favorites, but if you're just looking for a quick window into YouTube that's easy to show and hide, this YouTube widget just might be your answer.

  • Facebook Exporter updated for iPhoto '08

Attention all ye Facebook and iPhoto users: you may feel free to begin using iPhoto '08, now that Facebook has updated their Facebook Exporter plug-in. We first found this plug-in back in March, and while I'm definitely not the most active Facebook user or photo uploader, I don't think anything else is new. However, I just noticed a really cool feature that allows you to click anywhere on an image in the well on the right to create an outlining box around it, allowing you to name or tag whatever you're highlighting.

Facebook Exporter for iPhoto is provided for free by Facebook.

  • Get your Microsoft HD Photo plug-in for Photoshop

With the speed of evolution in computing, standards and the web, have you ever wondered why we've been stuck with JPG as an image format for so long? Microsoft sure did, and after about 5 years of mulling the question, the company has produced what sounds like a very promising replacement: HD Photo. Offering greater support for new digital imaging trends like HDR (High Dynamic Range), HD Photo boasts the same or better image quality than JPG in half the file size. While Microsoft has patents on some of the technology in HD Photo, they are surprisingly allowing anyone to license it for free for use in apps and devices like photo editing software and digital cameras. To learn more than you might ever want to know about HD Photo, check out its Wikipedia entry or episode #51 of TWiM (This Week in Media), one of my favorite podcasts in which the crew sits down with Bill Crow, Microsoft's Program Manager for HD Photo. Be careful with that one though - TWiM's cast is composed of some incredibly knowledgeable, hard-core media geeks, and they eventually get their geek on with Crow as they delve into the discussion.

Long story short: excitement is steadily building for HD Photo, as it is shaping up to be quite the revolutionary image format that could (hopefully) knock JPG off its pedestal some day. Fortunately, the HD Photo team have taken another step in spreading the format by releasing a Photoshop CS2/CS3 plug-in for PowerPC and Intel Macs running Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger. The plug-in can be downloaded from Microsoft, and it for some odd reason expires on December 31, 2007. If you know your stuff when it comes to image formats and you give this plug-in a spin, let us know what you think in the comments.

  • 2nd gen iPod Shuffle Watch Style Case

The problem with getting a case for the second gen iPod Shuffle is twofold. One, the thing is so cheap that it makes little sense to spend much more than $10 on a case. Two, that thing is built to last. I'm not sure if you've had a chance to handle a Shuffle as of late but they are solid little iPods so why even bother with a case?

That's why iPod Shuffle cases have to be cheap and offer up a unique way for you to interact with your Shuffle. The iPod Shuffle Watch Style Case has both bases covered. It goes for $9.99, is available in a number of colors, and allows you to strap your Shuffle to your wrist because watches are so last decade.

  • PandoraJam 1.0

I listen to music the way Jobs intended: on my iPod that is filled to the brim with only iTunes Store purchased music, however, I hear tell that there are some people out there that enjoy web based Internet Radio stations. Pandora is a favorite of these darn hippy freaks, with its large selection and easy to use UI. Sadly, a web service simply can't offer up the bells and whistles that an OS X app can.

That's where PandoraJam comes in. This $15 app streams music from Pandora and it lets you record songs in AAC format which are then imported into iTunes with cover art and the tags you've set. It also streams Pandora to an Airport Express so you can jam to your LSD inspired tunes on your HiFi.

  • HowTo: Restoring your iPhone Notes from a Mac

If your notes got wiped during a recent firmware upgrade, here are some steps that may help you recover them. Warning: Hacking expertise for this exercise is rated "high" to "severe".
    1. Install Apple Dev tools if they're not already on your computer.
    2. Copy this to your Mac, name it dbextract, make it executable, and add it to your path somewhere.
    3. Navigate to ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup.
    4. List all folders chronologically, i.e. ls -lt
    5. Go into the newest folder and run dbextract against the mdbackup files in that folder: i.e. dbextract *.mdbackup
    6. Examine the extracted database files. Open them if needed in sqlite3 and .dump their contents. If they have your content, great. If not, go to the next folder in chronological order and repeat.
    7. Once you find the notes.db file you're looking for, scp or sftp it over to your iPhone and place it into /var/root/Library/Notes.

  • iPhone 101: End a call quickly

When you simultaneously press the sleep/wake button and the volume button during a call on the iPhone, you'll immediately end that call and lock the screen.

Now, at the end of a conversation, you may give your iPhone a gentle squeeze and slip it right into your pocket.

    Thanks, Will!
