- Leopard's TextEdit Thinks Different
Filed under: OS, Cult of Mac, Odds and ends, Leopard
Who would have thought that one of Apple's most memorable ad campaigns and Leopard's most talked about features would collide? That's right, Think Different and Resolution Independence have joined forces to bring us Leopard's all new TextEdit icon. Head on over to NSLog to read the lovely letter that John Appleseed (who is that guy? I'm getting a John Galt vibe from him) penned to Kate. You might recognize the text from those iconic ads of Apple's yesteryear.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Tips and tricks, Troubleshooting, iPhone
Mac | Life has a huge roundup of "25 iPhone Power Tips"-- just in case you've been living under a rock since late June, here's everything you missed about the iPhone, from how to unstick a stuck slider, to using aluminum foil to insulate an audio cable from the iPhone's signal, to where to go for iPhone 411. Of course you're here already, baby, and if you haven't noticed, that we have a page completely dedicated to iPhone itself, then look no further.
Some of the tips are a little obvious (like #6: surprise, surprise, if you can't see the camera button while the phone's turned away from you, place your finger before you turn it-- brilliant!). And there are plenty of omissions-- I know for sure that Battlefleet, the best game I've seen on the non-jailbroken iPhone, is missing, and there's nothing at all about Installer.app or any of the craziness you can pull off with that. That's a big deal, even though it may be a little more underground than Mac | Life wants to go.
But there's some good info here, especially if you've just recently plunked down the cash to AT&T and want your tips all in one place. Just make sure to come back here and pay attention when you're done.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Productivity, Odds and ends
I just recently got through questioning the future of Office for the Mac and the MacBU and now the guys have Microsoft has introduced an interesting new website called "Art of Office." It's a kind of portal designed to allow Office users to share documents demonstrating various cools ideas and and techniques for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. They have a daily showcase of "most useful" and "most artistic" documents which users are invited to upload plus an Artists section. So if you're a real Office jockey, or just looking for some neat ideas, Art of Office is probably worth a look.

Let's say you've just announced a really controversial iPhone unlocking method based in software. Do you: (a) provide step-by-step screen shots, showing what your product can do; (b) offer a carefully crafted demonstration piece, highlighting your product in action; or (c) create a completely unwatchable video with an incomprehensible voice over and put it on your corporate blog?
Tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of dollars are at stake. What option do you pick?
It's not as if an average video camera cannot be placed on a pile of books on a chair with a fixed focus setting. It's not as if you can't spend 5 minutes writing out a rough script and speak slowly. But after being brought to international attention in the media, don't you think that if the first video turned out poorly, you'd at least re-shoot it? Even if you had to buy or borrow another $400 or $500 iPhone?
We at TUAW have watched this new video from the iPhone Unlocking blog. And let's just say: we're not very impressed.

Love it or hate it, a free iPhone is hard to resist. Maybe if it hadn't been unlocked, or hacked, or unbricked there would be substantially less interest. Then again, a $600 lump of coal is still 600 Washingtons more than the guy next to you, so there's that. I'm not saying you iPhone haters should toss the thing on ebay the day you get it, but we understand some of you haven't bought into the whole "computers will inevitably get smaller" vibe. It's cool. OS X isn't for everyone either.
At any rate, today's prize is the big Kahuna: an 8 GB iPhone. To enter, leave a comment on this post between 5AM and 11:59PM EST on August 29. Validate the comment for it to qualify, and only one per person please. Full rules on our TUAW Back-to-School Giveaway page. Good luck and thanks for reading!Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:
