  • Dine-o-Matic 2 will be released tomorrow

Phill Ryu did us a solid and dropped a quick note about an early preview of Dine-o-Matic 2 from Iconfactory. Just install the widget, punch in the names and numbers of your favorite restaurants, and a meal decision is only one click away. New in this version is categorization of the different places, more restaurant information, price filtering, and Google maps integration. I don't know if the original version had this, but the satisfying coin click and the neon buzzing are nice touches.

No more arguing about what to eat, or passive-aggressive "I don't care, whatever you're in the mood for is fine" back-and-forth. It is kind of a bummer that you have to type everything in (would be nice to integrate it with Grubhub or some other site like that) but considering that I only order from maybe five or six different places anyway, it's easy enough to punch them all in and have them ready to go when I'm up for some random ordering. If you're the type that orders out almost as much as you eat in (guilty as charged), Dine-O-Matic is worth checking out.

    Thanks, Phill!

  • Snapz Pro X 2.1.1 is available

Earlier today, Ambrosia released version 2.1.1 of their popular screen capture tool (we've written about Snapz Pro X several times). For the unfamiliar: Snapz Pro X lets you capture what you're doing on your Mac's screen - or just a portion thereof - as a Quicktime movie. It's a fantastic way to make screencasts, and also snags audio and still images.

Version 2.1.1 brings a number of changes, including:
    • Improved registration experience
    • Several squashed bugs, including the blank frames at the end of some movies and garbled video capture on older, nVidia-equipped Macs
    • Improved performance for audio captures
We like Snapz Pro X quite a bit. Try it out.

A single license will cost you $69US. It's universal and requires Mac OS 10.3.9 or later.

  • Apple Laptops Transforming PC Sales?

Perhaps its just a case of wishful thinking, but according to a survey highlighted in a recent article at the UK edition of Macworld, Apple Computer's sales of laptops have increased dramatically over the last few months due, in large part, to the public's demand and awareness of Apple products -- chiefly the iPhone. These trends are expected to continue and, according to the article, have an impact not only on Apple's bottom line, but on the PC industry as a whole.

The survey highlighted in the article was conducted by research firm ChangeWave and supports an earlier survey by the same company from a few months ago. It relates the following statistics:

Of the 3665 people surveyed, 28 percent say that if they intend to purchase a laptop in the next 90 days it will be a Mac. Also, an additional 23 percent say they'll purchase a desktop Mac. Apple scores high marks for customer satisfaction as well, according to the survey.

Of the people who purchased a Mac in the last 90 days, 86 percent report being "very satisfied with their purchase. The highest for any computer company. A fact that, according to ChangeWave, reflects a definite shift in the entire PC industry towards Apple and away from traditional market leaders like Dell.

What these statistics actually mean for Apple, and the PC industry as a whole, remains to be seen. Stats are great and if true, bode well for our favorite computer company. Still, in the interest of knowledge, let's conduct a little informal research ourselves, shall we? Two questions: Do you intend to purchase a laptop in the next 90 days and if so, will it be a Macintosh? If you've purchased a Macintosh in the last 90 days, how satisfied with it are you?

  • More on iPhone Backups

Earlier today, by request, I posted about a way to restore your notes.db file after inadvertantly deleting it via a firmware upgrade. As several readers have pointed out, it's a lot easier to perform a full backup before the restore than trying to backtrack afterwards. Here's a quick forcing back-up how-to for the Mac.

  • iTunes: Free Wednesday

Welcome to this week's edition of iTunes: Free Wednesday featuring a new collection of free singles and videos from around the world. Each week we send out our dealgnomes to the furthest corners of the Earth to find and retrieve iTunes freebies from all the International stores. Here's what's new today. Unfortunately, it's a pretty dry spell video-wise. Things should pick up pretty quickly once the Fall TV season swings into action. We keep hoping also that the UK video store will launch asap.

    US Music

US: Song for the Fields by Fields
Each week, we find a track from an artist or a band we've been enjoying and bring it to you, for free, as our Single of the Week. We get a lot of music coming through these parts, but the Fields struck a chord with us that we wouldn't mind being struck more often. "Song for the Fields" is a traditional folk tune as it might have been if the Flaming Lips and My Bloody Valentine took the place of Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger. Boy/girl harmonies that coo and curl around each other and moody, frantic acoustic guitars culminate in an expansive full-band, swooning blow-out at the end. Very nice and very free.

US: Esta Soledad by Kany Garcia
Each week, we find a track from an artist or a band who's on the cusp of success and bring it to you, for free, as our Canción de la Semana. Puerto Rico's Kany Garcia has a warm, strong voice that starts out with a deceptive whisper on "Esta Soledad." The track builds as Garcia takes command of the track, unveiling a strong voice suitable for shouting from mountaintops. Her band provides her with a slightly dreamy backdrop to work around, creating a sturdy mix of Coldplay-esque alt-rock in which to display her vocal skills.

US: Wrecking Ball by King Wilkie
Our Discovery Download puts the focus on a different genre each week, offering up a free track we think is worth your attention. King Wilkie are a young group of performers from Charlottesville who started out as strict adherents to the bluegrass style, but have opened up their doors of perception a bit more on their newest album, Low Country Suite. "Wrecking Ball" shows their love of the bluegrass form, but features a steely-eyed vocal more akin to a blues moan.

  • iJacket now does bluetooth

About a year ago, we wrote about the iJacket, which allows the wearer to interact with a pocketed iPod via controls on the sleeve. Today, it has received an upgrade.

Now called the "iJACKET" (I don't know why it must shout at me), it supports bluetooth, uses ElekTex "smart fabric" and allows people to "...use their cellphone and simultaneously listen to music on their iPods." Yup, that's a good idea.

There is one more thing. The price has been upgraded, too: from $750US for the "iJacket" to $1700US for the "iJACKET."

    Capital letters are expensive.

  • AT&T saves trees

    Filed under:

Good news for iPhone owners who love information but hate wasting paper. AT&T is texting iPhone accounts with messages saying: "We are simplifying your paper bill, removing itemized detail. To view all detail go to att.com/mywireless. Still need full paper bill? Call 611". Check your iPhone for the message.

After all the 500-page iPhone bill hilarity, sanity begins to return to the iPhone world.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

  • iMovie 7.0.1 is available

If you've got iLife '08 installed, check software update. Apple has made version 7.0.1 of iMovie available. While this update won't make it suck less, it does "...address issues associated with publishing to .Mac Web Gallery. It also improves overall stability and addresses a number of other minor issues."

    It's a 9MB download.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

  • Google Earth goes skyward

Our sister blog Download Squad pointed to the updated Google Earth today dubbed 'Google Earth Sky', because in the newest version you can look up. Not content to cover everyone on the ground, our Google overlords have turned their eye to the sky, and you can now search through galaxies, nebulas, and stars to your heart's content.

And you can do it all on the Mac from day one, which is pretty nice (you couldn't say the same about the original Google Earth). In terms of functionality, the program seems really similar to Celestia, also available on the Mac, just in case your astronomical needs aren't met by "Google Sky." And don't forget-- if your mapping needs run a little closer to home than, you know, light years away, moon.google.com is still open for business in the browser of your choice. Wonder why they didn't add that to the iPhone as well...

  • Fewer prepaid alerts after iPhone 1.0.2 update?

Now that the iPhone 1.0.2 update is out and growing its installed base, do any of you prepaid users notice a difference in the number of "You Last Transaction Cost $0.00" messages? Maybe it's just me but I'm getting the sense they've been cut back significantly. If you have a prepaid account, let me know whether this latest update has affected your useless message count.

Update: Looks like this is a server-side fix according to several readers.

How has 1.0.2 affected your alerts?
No change as far as I can tell
    Too early to tell
    Definitely cut down on messages
    Don't know
    Prepaid? Who goes prepaid anyway?
