  • Glass Cinema Displays?

On Tuesday, when Jobs announced the new iMac, he really made an effort to sell the new materials…aluminum and glass (which are two major components of the new iMac).

Glass is significantly more durable than the current material used in the LCD screens. It’s almost completely scratch resistant and has a much smaller chance of getting punctured in some way. Glass is also a lot easier to recycle.

Another thing Jobs mentioned was that they’ve had overwhelming feedback about the glossy displays on the MacBook and MacBook Pro.

So, those things being noted, do you think the next revision to their Cinema Display line with feature glass screens? I know I love the sharper colors on my glossy MBP screen. It’d be nice to see it on a larger scale (say…a 30″ display?).

  • Shiny Things

There was a mention on TUAW the other day of a version of the System Preferences icon made to look like the one from Leopard. Being both excited about Leopard and and very fond of changing my system icons, I took a look - and was very pleasantly surprised.

    sysprefs icon

The icon is quite nice, and a very near version of the one that’s in the devLeopard. Upon checking it out, I found that it came from one Sebastiaan de With, an icon and app designer from Holland, the owner of the excellent Icondesigner.net, and a bit of a well-known individual in the field of securing OS X. The icons are lovely and very professional - especially the War on Bad Design set, and the website got immediately added to my list to show off as design examples.

  • Media Temple Caters to iPhone

media temple iphone servicesJoining the ranks of iPhone-specific web applications, is the web hosting company, Media Temple (mt). Their angle is to offer iPhone-toting customers, access to control panel services for their (mt) hosted websites.

Buy Domains, pay bills, reboot your server, and a slew of other options await the (mt)/iPhone crowd. I don’t rock the (mt) hosting, nor are any of my personal sites so visible that I would need to do any of these things spur of the moment from my mobile phone, but maybe that’s just me.

I do think the concept is interesting. The scope of “applications” for the iPhone is widening as companies [like Media Temple] begin to think outside the box of the typical Web 2.0 services. It leads me to wonder how much all the iPhone-only web sites will track a return on their development efforts. It’s not like Palm or Windows mobile devices have ever garnered so much attention from developers in the past - or rather, if they have, only a select few have taken notice.

What iPhone [web] services have you been waiting for?

    Thanks for the tip Yas.

  • Apple Numbers Gallery

    Numbers Icon

Yesterday Apple announced and released its much anticipated spreadsheet application called Numbers.

Numbers is described as “spreadsheets the Mac way,” with the application offering significantly more functionality past just simply charting information and numbers. It’s a solid mixture of information organization, number calculation, and page layout/design.

The interface for numbers if very intuitive and is very easy to learn. Apple has quite a few Numbers tutorials on their website to help you learn even faster.

Below is a gallery of screenshots of the new Numbers interface. Enjoy!
