- NES emulator on the iPhone
Filed under: Gaming, Hacks, Odds and ends, iPhone
Wow-- something I've noticed after my little vacation last week is that the iPhone application community is at a full sprint (no pun intended) on making applications. When I left, people were dropping Hello World, and now we're up to the evolutionary step of NES emulator. By this time next week, we'll have a screenshot grabber (oh wait, we've already got that-- guess it's time to go for Open Office).
Wily programmer "stepwhite" has brought the InfoNES core onto the iPhone, along with Mario, Zelda, and all your favorite NES roms. As you can see, it's not quite done-- the emulator runs too slowly to be playable, and the controls are implemented with an actual controller image which, as the programmer says, "...while cute, sucks."
I don't know if theres any way to save states, either. Not a problem for Super Mario Bros., but Dragon Warrior or Final Fantasy might be a little long to have all in one go. But it is awesome, and just amazing that we've already gotten to this level on the iPhone. At this rate, we may not even need an SDK.
Thanks, Karl!Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Humor, Rumors, Odds and ends, iMac, Apple
The rumors are flying about what Apple might do to the Mac lineup tomorrow-- for my part, I just hope Jobs stays away from the Mac Mini long enough for me to get one with Leopard on it. But I can guarantee you that you won't see this baby, as cool as it is. This is a 3D demo from a guy working on a demo reel for ad agencies. But it is pretty amazing.
Now, people have said before that a multitouch computer like this wouldn't work-- to find out why, touch your screen for five minutes and notice how tired your arm feels. However, an interface like this is too good not to use somewhere. Sure, we may not see an iMac with a big touchable screen like this, but "...a guy can dream, can't he?"
Thanks, Andrew!Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Yesterday, I figured out how to record audio on the iPhone. Today, by popular request, I'll go through the how-to part. And, for those of you paying close attention, I've updated the application with lots of nice new features. For those of you playing along at home, here are the basics you'll need to know to get started with audio recording.

It's Rumor Day here at TUAW and next on the agenda is the iPod.
DigiTimes is reporting that a 16GB, flash-based video iPod is imminent. According to their "sources," the new iPod will be announced in September and use NAND flash.
Grab your salt shakers, as you'll need to extract a very large grain to accompany this story. Still, here it is.

Filed under: Rumors, Software, Internet Tools, .Mac
Yes, the most recent rumor about Apple's announcement tomorrow has been debunked by commenters and other sites, but this one stems from a scheduled maintenance message Apple has posted on their oft-debated .Mac service page (tip of the hat to reader Jake Coventry). Quoth Apple's message at www.mac.com:
Due to scheduled maintenance, .Mac members might be intermittently unable to access some .Mac services from 10 AM to 12 PM PDT on 08/07/2007. We apologize for any inconvenience.
While this doesn't necessarily guarantee .Mac will be getting any kind of upgrade or new features, it is a bit uncharacteristic for the service to tell its users about such a major downtime before it happens. On top of that, this outage is happening during the day of a big announcement that Apple clearly stated was going to be all about the Mac. Here's hoping for the best.Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

If going all-out with a custom Colorware paint job for your iPhone is a bit too over-the-top, perhaps some new iPhone skin kits from the everlasting DecalGirl are more your style. Printed on premium grade adhesive-backed cast vinyl with a high-gloss clear protective coating, all of their skins boast easy repositioning and goo-free removal (I've never used one of these - can anyone comment on their experiences with accessories like this and their goo factor?).
For the iPhone, DecalGirl already has over 160 designs that can easily be sorted by a large selection of colors and themes, and as a bonus, you also receive a matching iPhone wallpaper to complete the redecoration. Skins seem to all be priced at a reasonable $6.99, with extra protective or stylistic finishes - like Screen Armor, Matte and Gloss - available for $4.50 to $9.99.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

People like to sue each other (Americans at least), and they love to sue Apple.
Supposedly, the iPhone's keyboard infringes upon a patent awarded to Florida's SP Technologies LLC in 2004. They're seeking compensation for iPhones sold, as well as an injunction against the continued "...willful and deliberate" use of their intellectual property.
We'll see where this goes. In the meantime, we'll say it again: People love to sue Apple.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:
http://www.tuaw.com/2007/08/06/apple-sued-over-iphone-keyboard/#comments - Rumor mill: August 7 iMac announcements... likely NOT true
Filed under: Rumors, iMac, Apple
[Update 1:15 pm -- And this is why we don't often post product rumors... indications are that this is coming from someone posing as our "reputable source," and other sites have received and debunked the rumor. We tried to reach the source for verification but were not able to do so. Our apologies if this turns out to be complete bunk. -Ed.]
We don't often post product rumors hereabouts, although we're certainly not above reporting on them and linking to them; it's just not the regular beat. That said, when an email comes in from a reputable source (thanks, Mr. X) with supposed details on Tuesday's product announcement... well, we gotta let you all know. Pile on the disclaimers (this is a rumor!) and here we go. Our source says that there are plenty of new products coming on Tuesday:
Two new iMacs, with 20 and 24 inch screens, and entirely covered in brushed metal (!) plus the previously hinted new keyboard design and a slightly slimmer enclosure. Even more surprising, our source says the iMacs are shipping with a 2.4GHz Intel Penryn chip. Intel's first 45-nm CPU was originally slated to ship at the end of the year, and it's not clear that Apple could get enough parts to actually build these puppies before October, so take this with a grain of salt. The machines might ship with the dual-core Conroe part instead.
Three new Apple Displays at 20, 24, and 32 inches. These are supposed to have an iSight camera built in.
The Mac Pro will get a speed bump as the Xeon/Woodcrest chips are swapped out for Penryn chips, running at a brisk 2.4, 3.0, and 3.33GHZ.
Lastly, the long-expected end of life for the Mac Mini may finally come around as the machine is expected to be dropped from the product matrix. *sniffle*
Again, this is all unconfirmed. We'll know for sure on Tuesday!Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

There are two kinds of virtualization products for the Mac: first, the kind that develop fast, release quick, and damn the torpedoes; second, the kind that bake in the goodness and hold off on a release until everything meets the exacting standards of an enterprise software vendor. Today we get to see the final result of the second approach, as VMware Fusion is officially shipping after an extensive beta release. (Still love ya, Parallels, don't ever change.)
Fusion is available for $60 (after a $20 rebate) and offers all the XP-running, virtual-appliance-library downloading, window integrating, 3D emulating features you'd expect. I'm planning to do a little bake-off between the agile rookie and the wily veteran, now that everyone's on a fully released & supported plateau, to see which of the two meets my needs best.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Software Update, Apple, iPhone
No, I'm not talking about anything bad. Actually, its very good -- secret iPhone features! Yes, as usual Walt Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal digs deep into all-things-Apple and reveals some hidden features included in the recent 1.0.1 iPhone firmware update. Sadly, these "secret" features don't include some of the ones I, and others, would like to see, such as the ability to text message more than one person at a time or an IM client.
But even though they might not be fantastic, earth-shattering enhancements, they still, as Mossberg points out: "make the iPhone nicer to use." Some of the "secret" features found by Mossberg include the capability of having 50 favorite numbers in the phone application instead of the previous 20, the option to BCC yourself in the mail application instead of just CC, and the ability to now play music through previously incompatible car adapters and speakers originally designed specifically for the iPod.
That last one made me particularly happy because now I can listen to the terrific TUAW podcasts in my car via iPhone when all I got previously was seriously annoying feedback and an error message on the iPhone asking if I wanted to turn on Airplane Mode. So, kudos to Apple for "secret" updates and to Mossberg for uncovering them.
Anyone else discover any "secret" features with this update?Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

My iPhone broke. The screen just died a slow death, getting brighter and brighter and then very hot and then...nothing...over the course of a morning. With no phone to play with this morning, I did a lot of thinking and hunting through iPhone foundation files instead. And I seemed to find quite a lot of interesting calls in the Celestial framework, specifically the AVRecorder class.
I was pretty sure the capability was in there to begin with--after all, didn't the Steve promise us one back in the January Keynote? So that certainty made the class hunt go a little quicker.
When I returned home from the Apple Store Genius Bar with my new loaner, I put all that thought into code and this is what turned up: my newly written iPhone Voice Recorder utility. Yes, it is little more than a proof-of-concept but (a) it works, and (b) is the first step towards iPhone VOIP.
The recorder saves in Adaptive Multi-rate format (.amr files) that you can play back in QuickTime. I put them into the /tmp folder and tell you the name of the file when you finish your recording.
As always, I'd love to hear feedback and questions.
Update: Improved version with app wrapper is here

The Mac is not lacking for RSS reading solutions, led by TUAW favorite NetNewsWire, but more choice is good right? Cyndicate is a new feed reader, but with a good pedigree. It was developed by some of the original talent behind PulpFiction, an older feed reader which was sold and then fell out of active development. So in some ways Cyndicate is what PulpFiction should have become (Cyndicate includes an importer from PulpFiction and there is a limited time upgrade offer).
Cyndicate uses a three-paned interface very much like Mail.app. A few years ago the designer of both programs offered some justification for this with regards to PulpFiction. Whether you like this paradigm or not will probably depend on how you read your feeds. Personally, I still feel that NNW offers the most efficient methodology, but that may be primarily because I'm most familiar with it. Cyndicate does offer some interesting features revolving around searching, filtering, and smart folders that hold out promise for organizing the torrent of information hundreds of feeds bring in, so I'll be giving it a closer look.
Cyndicate is $29.95 and a demo is available.

Filed under: Cult of Mac, Apple, iPhone
Attention enthusiastic iPhone owners - Apple would like to hear just what it is you like so much about your new gadget. At a new page under apple.com/iphone, Apple has presented a form with which you can share your iPhone stories. Has the iPhone changed the way you work? Perhaps you warmed grandma's heart with your finger-flickin' photo albums? Or maybe your two-and-a-half year-old figured out how to use your iPhone? Whatever the tale, Apple would like to hear it, probably so they can scatter some quotes from real world folks like you around the iPhone product pages.
Personally, I had to thank Apple for finally putting the real internet in my pocket, as no other device - not even a BlackBerry or IE on Windows Mobile - has been able to handle the home-grown content management system we use for Weblogs, Inc. blogs. The iPhone can, which means I'm able to perform some of my administrative duties at Download Squad anytime, anywhere I need, and that's enough of a life-changing story for me.

Filed under: iLife, Software, Productivity, Internet Tools
Fraser Speirs' FlickrExport plug-ins for iPhoto and Aperture are the undisputed kings of bridging the gap between Flickr and your Mac-managed photos. The plug-ins are pretty powerful, offering a lot of strong integration with Flickr by adding photos to sets or creating new sets on the fly, as well as keeping in step with the tags you use in your account. The Aperture plug-in can even keep track of the photos you upload to Flickr and replace them with updated versions - instead of creating a duplicate. Apparently not one to sit in one place for too long, however, Speirs is already hard at work on a new version, FlickrExport 3.
Not many details are known just yet, but Speirs has been tweeting some teasers about the new version, and just this morning published a screencast (.MOV link) demoing some of the impressive new Groups features in FlickrExport 3 for Aperture. Most notably, users will no longer be limited with adding a picture to one group at a time - the new version features a table of all the groups to which you belong, allowing you to check more than one group for adding the images to. FlickrExport 3 will even check with Flickr to make sure you haven't overstepped the upload quota for each group.
[Update: Mr. Speirs stopped by to comment that the new features in this particular demo will also be present in FlickrExport 3 for iPhoto as well; he just happened to be demoing them in Aperture for this screencast.]
No release date has been set for FlickrExport 3 just yet, and I assume the prices will remain the same for the iPhoto plug-in (~ $23 USD) and Aperture plug-in (~ $27 USD).Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

As a matter of fact, iGTD will be split into three versions: iGTD Basic (the one that will continue to be free), iGTD Home&Office and iGTD Pro, each offering increasing abilities to sync and share tasks between Macs on the network and, with the Pro version, around the world. iGTD Pro will also allow to access your data with a web tool, possible a sooped up version of iPhoneiGTD. Licensing and availability details on these new versions, however, are still under wraps.

Earlier today, I learned about this iPhone screen shot snippet meant to be used inside an application. It produces PDF results. After playing with the code and realizing it probably couldn't be expanded to a general purpose screenshot utility, I decided to write one from scratch by taking advantage of UIApplication's _dumpScreenContents: protocol.Update: My daughter figured out that if you set the iPhone to never sleep and put it into camera mode, you can script it to take screen shots every minute (or five minutes or however long) to take time lapse series of images. We are so going to try this out.
Update 2: Tried it out. Only gets about 4 pictures per minute when in a loop so video is a no-go.
