  • TUAW File: Apple's iPhone Demo Contacts - perfect for your ad spoofs

Now that you have a usable snippet of the music from the iPhone commercials with which to start making your spoofs, how about a default set of contacts so you don't post anyone's private information for the whole world to see? Thanks to a clever reader by the name of Stephen Kenny, TUAW is now hosting this copy of the 60 phony contacts set up in the demo iPhones in Apple Stores. In case you're wondering, yes: this means you too can have John Appleseed in your iPhone!

The primary idea here is that you can simply sync these contacts perhaps as a group (or the only group) to your iPhone and only use those when demoing making fun of any of its features. Adding them all to a specific group in Address Book will help you keep things organized (both on and off screen), and you can easily delete them once you get all those spoofs uploaded to YouTube. Plus, your friends and coworkers will thank you for not putting their phone number or home address in too public of a place.

Without further adieu, here is the 5.2MB zip file containing 60 contacts that won't mind being spotlighted in your iPhone spoof ads. This zip file contains a vCard file, ripe for importing into Address Book (and possibly Entourage/Outlook as well) and synching with your iPhone.

  • iTunes 7.3.2

Did the feeling that your current version of iTunes just became woefully out of date wash over you a moment ago? It should have because Apple has just pushed out iTunes 7.3.2 to Software Update. Quoth the update: 'iTunes 7.3.2 provides bug fixes to improve stability and performance'.

Who doesn't love stability and performance improvements? The update hasn't hit Apple's site as of yet, but it is available via Software Update.

    Thanks, Craig.

  • Xtorrent 1.1 beta 1 released with major new features

Dave Watanabe has released v1.1 beta of Xtorrent, his excellent BitTorrent client. With this major x.1 release, Watanabe has included some significant new features like individual file selection, file prioritization, individual file completion status, and improved privacy options. Watanabe has updated Xtorrent's UI to help bring some of these features directly to the user, and I'm also noticing what I think are a couple of new preferences, such as the ability to individually toggle whether audio and/or video are added to iTunes after being completely downloaded. The new features are definitely welcome, and Watanabe is optimistic about some planned features down the road.

After trying far too many Mac OS X BitTorrent clients, I finally decided on Xtorrent and have been a happy owner. A base single user license costs $24, with the option to purchase lifetime upgrades for only $9 more.

  • TUAW Tip: Turn off your Cinema Display without putting your Mac to sleep

Green computing is all the rage these days, and one of my co-workers champions environmentally sound practices here at the office. One day as we were leaving for lunch he noticed that I just locked my iMac's screen, which in turn locked the 23 inch Cinema Display attached to it. They were both happily displaying the screensaver (yes, I am aware that I am a geek). He suggested I turn off the secondary monitor if I was going to be away from my desk for awhile. I agreed with his suggestion in theory, but pointed out to him that the power button on Apple's Cinema Displays aren't actually power buttons at all. When you press them they put your machine to sleep, and since my Mac was doing some work I didn't want to do that.

Poking around the Display options shortly there after (System Preference > Displays) I noticed an 'Options' tab on the preferences for my secondary monitor. Lo and behold, the answer to my quandary was found. The power button on Cinema Display is set to put your Mac to sleep when pressed by default, but as you can see it can also be set to simply power off the monitor or do nothing at all.

I now turn off my monitor whenever I am not at my desk, and the world is a little bit greener for it.

  • Hazel 2

    Filed under:

Hazel is a TUAW favorite, and we have been anxiously awaiting the day when Hazel 2 exits beta. Well, folks, today is that day. Hazel 2 is now available for purchase (a free upgrade for current users, and $21.95 for a single user license).

Hazel is an automation tool that makes organizing your files a snap. You can create a number of sophisticated rules based on everything from file age to location, and then have Hazel act on those rules. Hazel will delete files for you, archive things, add labels, and much more.

    New in Hazel 2 are:
    • App Sweep: Hazel keeps an eye out for when you delete an app. When you do, it offers to throw away all the other associated files with that app (support files that is, not files that you created with the app itself).
    • Growl support
    • New actions including rename file, sort into subfolders, and more.
That's just the tip of the iceberg. Read the release notes for the fully skinny.

  • VMware Fusion set for August 6th release

    Filed under:

Running Windows is something that most people need to do at some point, that's a fact. Luckily for us Mac users running Windows on Intel Macs is much better than emulating Windows on PPC Macs (I still shudder when I think back to my Virtual PC days). This is because instead of having to emulate the processor architecture, as well as run the software, it is possible to 'virtualize' Windows on Intel Macs. This means that Windows runs in its own little space on your Mac's Intel chip (that's a gross over simplification, but you get the idea).

My virtualization app of choice, VMware Fusion, is finally entering the home stretch of its beta. VMware told our friends at Ar Technica that the final version of Fusion will be available for purchase on August 6th for $79.99 (you can preorder it up until the 5th for $39.99). VMware Fusion builds on VMware's rock solid virtualization technology and wraps it up in a pretty Cocoa shell. Check out all Fusion's features here.

  • Microsoft Office 2008 for the Mac delayed until January 2008

    Filed under:

Craig Eisler, General Manager of the MacBU and proud Canadian, contacted TUAW with some news about Microsoft's much anticipated Universal release of Office, Microsoft Office 2008 for the Mac. Craig let us know that Microsoft has pushed back the release of Office 2008 for the Mac to make sure that the suite is up to snuff.

Office 2008 for the Mac will be released for manufacture in December of this year for a US release of mid-January 2008 (just in time for Macworld 2008).

Clearly updating a large suite like Office is always a major undertaking, and focusing on getting it right is great, however, January 2008 is 5 months away from now. I asked if there would, by any chance, a public beta in the coming months. Sadly, there will not be one. It would seem if you want to get your fix of Office 2008 you'll have to check out this gallery of screenshots Microsoft provided to us during Macworld 2007.
