- Apple eager to let you know about iLife '08
Apple, it would seem, is eager to let you know about iLife '08. Several readers have emailed us, and I just experienced for myself, this lovely message that greats you when you fire up an app from iLife '06. I launched iPhoto 6 to make sure a feature I was blogging about wasn't in it (look for that iPhoto '08 post in a little bit) and I was greeted with the above message.
At least you can turn it off, which is nice of Apple.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Other Events, Steve Jobs
As usual, Apple have posted the video of today's press event for all to see. Marvel at the new iMac, iLife '08, iWork...and count the number of times Steve says, "Boom!"
I know I've been eager to see those apps in action, but the demo videos have been getting slammed all day. Perhaps this will be better.
You can watch it all here.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Software, Productivity, Internet Tools
You TUAW readers have spoken loud and clear: Transmission is your favorite BitTorrent client. If you're nodding your head right now, you'll be happy to know that v0.8 of the cross-platform app has gone official, ushering in a boatload of new features and fixes for all OSes it works on, as well as some great Mac-only goodies. Before we get to the new stuff, however, I have to echo a warning on the main Transmission page: if you're in the middle of any downloads right now, finish them before upgrading; you could lose data if you jump the gun.
That said, let's talk about the shiny new changes. First up, here are the new feature highlights that everyone can enjoy:
- Ability to selectively download and prioritize files
- Torrent file creation
- Speed and CPU load improvements
- Better rechecking of torrents that have many files
- Overlay when dragging torrent files, URLs, and data files onto window
- Ability to set an amount of time to consider a transfer stalled
- More progress bar colors
- Various smaller interface improvements
- Italian, Korean, and Russian translations
Thanks to everyone who sent this in!Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

- The new iMac and iPhone, separated at birth?
Filed under: iPod Family, iMac, Apple, iPhone
During the deluge of news coming out of Apple today I paused for a second and thought, 'Hmm, the new iMac kind of looks like a big old iPhone.' Luckily I was not the only one to notice this. The good folks at Signal v.s Noise (the blog from 37signals, the makers of Basecamp amongst other things) also noticed. They point out that the previous incarnation of the iMac took its design cues from the iPod. Consumer electronics shaping the design of a consumer computer, makes sense to me.
Does this mean that those fabled touch screen iPods will look like iPhones? Wouldn't surprise me a bit.
I would like to know what you think of the iMac's new look. Sound off in the comments.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Odds and ends, iMac
When Steve said those new iMacs were available today, he meant it. One of the lovable staffers at Ars Technica couldn't resist the siren's song of the new iMac. Since they are, you know, geeks they took a series of unboxing pictures which we are required, by law, to link to. Don't blame me, I'm just doing my duty as a card carrying member of the Mac Web.
Apple was kind enough to include a nice, soft cloth with which to wipe the screen clean of all your friend's drool.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Internet Tools, Open Source, Apple, .Mac
The .Mac galleries got a lot of time today in Steve's presentation, and for good reason. Though I won't be dropping Flickr any time soon, the .Mac galleries are very cool looking and have some very nice features (the 'photo skimming' is a nice touch). It would seem that Apple leveraged some Open Source goodness in order to get these galleries up and running. According to the SproutIt blog Apple is using the SproutCore application framework, and has contributed back a number of enhancements to the project.
A quick peek at the code of a gallery confirms that Apple is using SproutCore (just search for sproutcore.js) as well as script.aculo.us (a set of open source javascript libraries that handle things like animation). If that's isn't Web 2.0 enough for you, I don't know what is.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: iPod Family, iTS, iTunes
Apple has released another iPod game today, Musika [iTunes link]. It's part quiz, part visualizer. Along with the magical dancing colors, Musika presents you with several characters. Select the one that's in the title of the currently playing track to advance and unlock additional features.
Or, just zone out to the visuals.
Musika costs $4.99US and requires a fifth generation iPod with software version 1.2 or later (Apple makes great pains to point out that this game will not work with an iPhone).Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

We reported that Office 2008 for the Mac has been delayed until January 2008, which means you'll have to use the beta file converter before you can open Word 2007 for Windows documents on your Mac (Office 2007 introduced a new file format called Office Open XML which Office 2004 for the Mac doesn't support. The converter dumbs down the file so Office for the Mac can open it).
Sure, you could do that, or you could use the first word processor for the Mac that supports that file format natively: Pages '08. That's right, Apple's little word processor that could can open Word 2007 documents (and earlier). It doesn't just open them either, Apple says that styles, tables, and other parts of the document are intact as well.
That sound you just heard? The MacBU screaming in frustration.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Are you chomping at the bit for iWork '08? Chomp no more (I mean, that can't be good for your teeth)! Apple has just made available a free 30 day trial for download. Take Pages, Keynote, and Numbers for a spin before you plunk down your hard earned cash for it. Now, if only Apple would do the same for iLife '08.

The St. Petersburg Times is reporting today that a new Apple Store will be built in Tampa Bay, Florida. Developers have planned an 800,000-square-foot "lifestyle center" (remember when we called them "malls?") that will become the Shops at Wiregrass. Apple is listed as a tenant.
Construction is scheduled to begin this month and finish in time for the grand opening in August of 2008. This will be Florida's 15th Apple store (Tampa's 2nd).

Well, here's something interesting. This morning, I had three options when working with photos on my iPhone: "Use as Wallpaper," "Email Photo" and "Assign to Contact." Well, I turned my phone on a minute ago (about 4:15 PM Eastern), and a fourth option has appeared: "Send to Web Gallery." No sync, no connection to my computer, it's just there.
If you haven't restarted your iPhone today, do it now. A surprise may be waiting for you.
Thanks, Kit!
Update: It looks like you must have a .Mac email account set up on your phone for this to work. Also, attempts to send a photo to a gallery result in a prompt to configure .Mac. However, that option is not available on the .Mac hompage. Perhaps iLife '08 must be installed.Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:
http://www.tuaw.com/2007/08/07/iphones-ready-for-web-gallery-now/#comments - iTunes: Free Tuesday
Filed under: iTS, Features, Deals
Welcome to this week's edition of iTunes freebies. This week we feature a new collection of free singles and videos from around the world. Here's what's new today.
US Music
US: Daisy (Edit) by Halfway to Hazard
Each week, we find a track from an artist or a band who's on the cusp of success and bring it to you, for free, as our Single of the Week. Halfway to Hazard are a duo from southeast Kentucky - Chad Warrix and David Tolliver. This track is a mixture of sweet, harmonized country pop and a big ol' southern rock ballad. The tale within the tune is worth noting - it goes from young love to tragedy and redemption. It also might be the first song to use the phrase "and the day her water broke" in music history.US: Viva la Guantanamera (featuring Wildog of Ozomatli, the Klezmatics & Kemo the Blaxican) by Hip Hop Hoodios
Each week, we find a track from an artist or a band who's on the cusp of success and bring it to you, for free, as our Canción de la Semana. Hip-Hop Hoodios is a Latino-Jewish collective known for its mixture of Latin funk and old-school hip-hop. The band gets some help on this track from Ozomatli's Wildog, members of the Klezmatics, and Kemo the Blaxican. It's party music - but with more thoughtfulness and awareness than you might expect.US: Horse and I by Bat for Lashes
Our Discovery Download puts the focus on a different genre each week, offering up a free track we think is worth your attention. Natasha Khan is the voice and songwriter behind Bat for Lashes. "Horse and I" is a track from her debut, Fur and Lashes, and it captures the sort of dark, cinematic grandeur that she excels at. Against a musical backdrop of strings, eerie whistles, harpsichord, and a military drumbeat, the song comes off like Bjork traipsing around the set of a Tim Burton film.Continue reading iTunes: Free Tuesday

Apple has quietly updated one more product today. Hidden at the end of the iMac press release we find out that the Airport Extreme Base Station now sports Gigabit Ethernet ports (one WAN, 3 for devices) whereas only yesterday they were 100baseT. The Airport Extreme Base Station tech specs haven't been updated on its own site as of yet, but the picture above was snagged from the Apple Store. They are still priced at $179.

In case you were counting the minutes until the Apple Store was back up and you could hurriedly place your orders for all the new fancy thing Mr. Jobs announced today, you can stop counting now. The store is back up and seemingly ready for business.
I'm going to be getting iLife '08 today and maybe one of those new aluminum keyboards -- the USB one not Bluetooth. Who knows, if I'm really feeling salty, perhaps a new aluminum iMac as well?
After all, I've been pretty good this year so what the heck, right? What about you guys, what are you gonna get now that you can lay your hard-earned money down?Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:
http://www.tuaw.com/2007/08/07/and-were-back-apple-online-store-back-up/#comments - iWeb '08
Filed under: iLife, Software, Features, Internet Tools, .Mac
I need to come right out and say it: I am really, really excited for iWeb and all the new .Mac changes. With the first version of iWeb, Apple didn't seem to quite 'get it' yet; everything you could build into your pages had to more or less come from your Mac desktop. In a web 2.0 world though, that just doesn't cut it for so many aspiring iWeb users. Many of us have Twitter accounts, pictures on Flickr and stuff we create at zillion of other sites that we'd like to integrate into a personal website, and iWeb 2.0 reveals that Apple finally understands this.
Web Widgets
Finally melding the power and ease iWeb brings to publishing your Mac's media with the rest of the internet is iWeb's arguably biggest new feature: Web Widgets. While this page is a little skimpy on details, we can now embed code snippets from the endless community sites cropping up on the web into our iWeb pages. As an awesome bonus I can't wait to see in action, iWeb also offers a live preview mode that will include these widgets, so you can see your site in action and be sure everything gels before publishing.
Publish to a personal domain
This feature doesn't get its own page at the new iWeb site, but hopeful iWeb power users will likely appreciate the fact that you can now publish your sites to personal domains. Details are even slimmer for this one, but it sounds like Apple finally shared some of Mac OS X's built-in FTP abilities with iWeb, allowing us to set up our own personal sites for one-click publishing.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:
http://www.tuaw.com/2007/08/07/iweb-08/#comments - Garageband '08
Filed under: iLife, Multimedia, Software
As you may have seen, Apple released iLife '08 (so long, 2007!) earlier today. This post will examine GarageBand '08.
Most interesting to me is Magic GarageBand. It's a quick way to set up a rhythm section (drums, bass and guitar) to play a simple chord progression while you play on top. Work out new riffs, a solo or compose a new song. Select the style (jazz, rock, etc.) for your "backing band" to play. That's pretty cool.
Arrangements let you identify your parts, like chorus, verse, bridge and coda. While I'd like to make an actual chart, I guess that's what Pro Tools is for. Still, this is handy for at-a-glance organization.
Multi-track recording will save every take, so you can quickly revert to a previous recording. That's pretty handy.
There's also a new visual EQ and several new Jam Packs, but let's talk about automation. Change the tempo or volume of any song or instrument at any point. Best of all, GarageBand will remember your changes and reproduce them at another point in the song with a click. Very cool.
We're eager to get our mits on GarageBand '08. Let's jam!Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:
http://www.tuaw.com/2007/08/07/garageband-08/#comments - The Mac mini: alive and upgraded
I love the Mac mini. It's the perfect computer. Small, cheap, embed-able, media-friendly. And today, the Steve announced that the mini line was not only not doomed but that it would receive a hardware refresh. Today! All of us who love the mini have been on pins and needles. It turns out not only were the rumors of its demise premature but today we're treated to a newly upgraded line. Yay!New units will ship with 1.83 GHz and 2.0 GHz processors and 80 GB and 120 GB drives. You can upgrade to 160 GB hard drives, up to 2GB of RAM, and a slot-loading Dual-Layer supporting super drive (the DL drive is standard with the 2.0 GHz model). You can even pair it with one of those spiffy new keyboards.
Thanks, Carl Trimble.

Filed under: iLife, Software Update, Apple
Let's say you bought a Mac... oh, I don't know, earlier today. iLife '06 was the hotness. You were going along happily putting up photocasts, and making podcasts with Garageband. Then Steve Jobs strikes! iLife '08 is announced and iLife '06 suddenly looks... boring.
Well, thanks to the iLife '08 Hardware Up-To-Date offer you can get an upgrade to iLife '08 for $9.95 (if the computer you bought on, or after, Aug 7th is on this list).
I think Apple should give you a free upgrade if you buy a Mac with iLife '06 on it after today, but that's just me (of course I would make sure before I buy a Mac any time soon that it comes with iLife '08 pre-installed. Why spend another 10 bucks?).Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:
