- Apple Design Awards 2007
Apple has announced the winners of the 2007 Apple Design Awards, and as always, the winners are a selection of the very best of OS X applications. While a good deal of the winning developers tonight received their second or even third award, it's nice to see a bunch of smaller and lesser known first time winners mixed in.
Results after the jump.Continue reading Apple Design Awards 2007

Filed under: Software, Cool tools, Productivity, Internet Tools
It's been over a year since we first mentioned Pyro, the powerful Mac OS X client for 37signals' Campfire web-based chat service for groups and businesses. While I personally didn't pick up a copy back then since I wasn't a Campfire user, I'm not entirely familiar with every change that has come since April '06. Still, even the most recent list of changes warrants Pyro another mention, especially since I'm looking at using Campfire for a few uses and projects.- Any file type can be dragged onto Pyro to share in a Campfire chat
- Pyro will automatically zip a folder or .APP
- Dragging an image from a web browser will insert a URL for that image instead of uploading it
- Campfire's new sidebar search field now works in Pyro
- Support for the new WebKit installed by Safari 3 beta (mentioned on the Pyro development blog)
- and of course, bug fixes

We all know that Mac developers aren't thrilled with the 'iPhone SDK' which boils down to creating webpages with JavaScript. This isn't anything new or exciting, since we've known for awhile that the iPhone is running a full version of Safari.
David Cann has whipped up a demo page that shows you what this web experience might look like on the iPhone. Using the Digg API, David wrote this Digg page that lets you skim Digg's categories. He has made the source code available, so you can dive in for yourself. Oh, and I tested it in Safari 3, and it works so I assume it'll work on your iPhone.

Yesterday we made a trip to 240 Stockton Street, a gorgeous old art deco building overlooking Union Square in San Francisco. A short elevator ride up and we were taken on a quick tour of the Bently Holdings SF office-- an office that runs everything on a Mac. They are really serious about it too (check out the posters). We also got a sneak peek inside one of the most exclusive spas in town: Kamalaspa. Very swank, and in true fanboy form their fish tank is stocked with the fish from Finding Nemo. Take a look at the video for what might be the holy land for you Mac techs out there.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

In today's world, media cannot be lost but only transformed. In this specific case, TUAW's Scott McNulty's appearance on CNBC is the transformation target; if you had trouble watching the clip of the Face2Face segment in CNBC's Windows Media embed on their page, the video is now available in the iTunes Store as a podcast. Watch Scott try to get a word in edgewise as the chatty traders shout over each other; not to be missed.

Spongebob is ON SALE! You can pick up an entire season of Spongebob for just 21 bucks--rather than the normal $40. Apple and Nickelodeon are running a Summertime stock-up-on-Nick sale with titles ranging from Dora to Invader Zim to the Fairly Oddparents. If you've got a kid, and you've got some loooong family trips coming up or if you've just got an embarassing but potentially treatable familial TV-viewing habit, now is the time to stock up on Nick at iTunes. Yadi yadi limited time blah blah blah.

Filed under: WWDC, Leopard, Flickr Find
TUAW reader Dave Lettice found this shot one in one of Apple's new Preview. He grabbed a screen and uploaded it to Flickr. To make sure we were actually looking at Preview, he checked the menu bar and the dock--as you can see with the Flickr notations he added.
In this shot, you can see a teeny tiny version of the new Preview tools which from left to right appear to be Previous and Next arrows, Zoom out and in buttons, a trio of button that I can't read but which seem to be labeled "M-something", "Text" and "Select", a colorful drop-down menu labeled with a word starting with A, a "Mark Up" menu, an Inspector, a Search field (good for those PDFs!) and a button to reveal/hide the sidebar. Feel free to Zapruder further for those items that I couldn't read or just got wrong.

http://www.tuaw.com/2007/06/12/flickr-find-preview-in-leopard/#comments - No ZFS by default for Leopard
Filed under: WWDC, Apple, Leopard
Remember when Jonathan Schwartz, CEO of Sun, told an audience that OS X would be sporting ZFS as the file system of choice and that we would find out all about it at WWDC? It would seem no one told Apple that, as the Stevenote came and went with nary a mention of ZFS or Sun. InformationWeek caught up with Brian Croll, Apple's senior director of product marketing for Mac OS X, and asked about ZFS on the Mac. Croll said, "ZFS is not happening," and that HFS+ is the default.
It is unclear if Leopard will still support ZFS as an option, but it is clear that the default is still HSF+.
Thanks to everyone who sent this in.
Update: ZFS is still an option in Leopard, it is just not the default. I've updated the headline to reflect this.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:
