  • iTunes Japan: Friday Update

Every week, the Japanese iTunes store updates later than the stores for the rest of the world. Because of this, the iTunes Single of the Week for Japan lags behind other countries. Sorry about taking so long this week to get around to posting this update. It's been iPhone crazy. Here (finally) is this week's offering.

    Japan 今週のシングル: Super by Zeep

  • Moving your Parallels virtual machine to another Mac

Recently, I decided it was time to do a clean install of OSX on my current primary home Mac -- a 20" Intel Core Duo iMac named Phoenix. Ordinarily, when I first get a new Mac, I usually wipe it completely and start over with a fresh install, putting in only the things I want -- but for some reason never did that with this one. So, it was time. Really, who needs all those printer drivers and languages anyway?

Another reason I wanted to nuke and pave this Mac was to reclaim the space taken over by the Windows partition devoted to Boot Camp. Yes, I realize I could have accomplished that by using the Boot Camp Setup software, but I was already ready to do a fresh install anyway, so I went ahead and just reformatted the drive completely. Once it was done, I went happily along installing the things I would need on the iMac to get my daily work done: Microsoft Office, NetNewsWire, Firefox, Adobe Photoshop, etc.

I also wanted to use Parallels on this Mac as well, so I installed that too. However, and this is the cool part, I didn't want to take the time to reinstall Windows and have to reconfigure it, do all the updates, etc. Instead, I copied the Parallels Folder from my MacBook Pro, which is located in the Documents Folder inside my Users Folder, to my iMac, started up Parallels and presto: Windows booted and I was good to go. No reinstall or re-authorization necessary. The only thing that I needed to install again was Parallels Tools -- even though it was already installed.

Once I did that, Windows functioned exactly the same way it did on my MacBook Pro. Fortunately, the serial number I used for my Windows install on the MacBook Pro allows it to be installed on two machines, otherwise I would delete it immediately from the MBP. So, just a tip should you ever need to wipe your drive and wish to alleviate at least some of the resulting hassle associated with putting all your software back on your Mac.

I'm sure this would also work if you were moving from an old Mac to a new one. Or, you could always use the Migration Assistant, which should accomplish the same thing. Although, being a hands-on type I usually migrate everything manually and drop it where it needs to go. But that's a subject for another post. For now, any questions?

  • Well. I'm in line. (Oakbrook Mall)

    Filed under:

Alright. I'm here. I'm set. 5 a.m. No wasting time, man, no wasting time.

I'm sitting in front of the Apple Store Oakbrook here in Oak Brook, IL., along with sixteen other crazies. The first in line, a nice lady by the name of Jamene Reynolds, got here at 3-freakin-a.m. The rest trickled in a little after that. It's no Michigan Avenue line, but it continues to grow with each passing minute. One kid's getting paid $15/hour, saving a space. Another says if he doesn't get an iPhone, "he'll have to go streaking" (but he may have been joking...?). iPhone Hysteria seems ripe.

We managed to organize ourselves into a stable line -- the Apple Store employees are no help as of yet; they stand at the door, mocking us with their insider-ness -- and things seem orderly. And we're all excited.

Stay tuned with TUAW and our beloved bros at Engadget for the bestest iPhone coverage on the 'net. Only thirteen hours to go. Let iDay (lame) begin!

[Update:] If anyone's at -- or will be at -- the Oakbrook store, I'm about the eighth person in line, wearing a black hoodie, probably sitting on the floor, and most likely fiddling on my MacBook Pro. Feel free to say hi! I forgot how boring these lines actually are.

  • Is an EDGE speed bump the iPhone's "one more thing?"

    Filed under:

If the iPhone has an Achilles' heel, I'd say it's the sluggish performance of AT&T's "2.5G" EDGE wireless data network, which (while gentle on battery life) is substantially slower in real-world use than the competitive EVDO/CDMA technology from Sprint and Verizon, not to mention AT&T's own lightly-deployed HSDPA network... but has EDGE really been performing at top speed?

Those millions of dollars of network infrastructure improvements leading to "Touch Friday" must be doing something, and according to Engadget and the HowardForums & MacRumors boards, those dollars may have been put towards a bundle of enhancements called "Fine EDGE." Maybe it's a group hallucination, maybe a temporary anti-glitch, but forum posters are reporting dramatically better EDGE speeds than they were getting just days earlier -- around 200kbits/sec, edging up close to the maximum speeds allowed by the protocol and in some cases double the performance they were accustomed to seeing.

Is this the iPhone Halo effect at work? Or just a coincidence, a measurement error, an illusion? We'll find out more over the weekend.

  • Daily Show tackles iPhone fever

Nothing's funnier than geek humor, I suppose. Tonight's episode of The Daily Show featured a segment with correspondent Rob Riggle on a mission to get himself an iPhone. When he discovered that the onsale date was tomorrow, he interviewed (and came close to beating up) Gizmodo's Brian Lam (of the Cisco iPhone fracas) to try and get a piece of the action. Riggle eventually admitted to Jon Stewart that he'd been out selling his body, working to earn the scratch for his iPhone fix. Classy.

  • iPhone article roundup for bedtime reading

    Filed under:

More press coverage late tonight for some product launch tomorrow...

    o. BusinessWeek on the mojo of Apple product marketing; includes trenchant observations like "consumers just want a great experience...they don't buy platforms" and tidbits from PortalPlayer former CEO Gary Johnson, who says that Apple's easygoing California image is an illusion -- the company is as hardnosed and difficult to please as they come.

    o. USAToday with a slew of stories, including the obligatory "thousands in line" piece and a Q&A with Steve Jobs and AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson. Revealed here: Steve's got butterflies in his tummy, and we should expect some announcements on corporate (read: Exchange) enhanced support on the iPhone in the next few weeks. I would imagine this is something along the lines of the rumored ActiveSync licensing deal, but it might also be a reference to the announced Q3 availability of Visto Mobile for iPhone.

    o. The New York Times delves deeper into the decision to go with EDGE over the faster 3G wireless data standard for the iPhone. Ubiquity of the EDGE footprint + much lower power usage were the deciding factors; the WiFi auto-cutover should improve the browsing experience for many.

Want more iPhone news? It's out there...
