  • Mystery Solved? 10.4.10, Yahoo!, and the iPhone

The addition of a Yahoo! sync framework in 10.4.10 certainly seems a bit puzzling on the surface, but after some grinding of my mental cogs, I think I've figured it out.

If you will think back to MacWorld 2007 and the announcement of the iPhone, you'll remember that Steve Jobs brought three special guests on stage. Stuffed between Eric Schmidt and Stan Sigman (of Google and Cingular, respectively) was Jerry Yang from Yahoo! who used his time to talk about the free Yahoo! IMAP "push" email that will be bundled with every iPhone.

With an email account comes a contact list, and in this day and age of do-everything service providers, a calendar usually comes with it. It makes sense then that Apple would make it possible to edit and sync these things from your desktop- thus the new framework. Sure, I can do all that from my iPhone, but do I really want to enter and tweak 300 address book entries on such a small device?

Obviously, this is just idle postulation, but I'd be surprised if something like this didn't get announced before the release of the iPhone later this month.

  • Zaprudering the iPhone: Updated Internet Videos at Apple

    Filed under:

Over at Apple, several of the iPhone example videos have undergone an upgrade. During the past week or two, many of the videos went from a 2-D (straight on) look to a 3-D (iPhone tilted away) look. Today, the Internet videos went a bit further. Here are some of the changes between the old and the new videos:

YouTube Widget. The standard set of widgets now includes a YouTube widget on the second row. Apple offers a new YouTube video QuickTour as well.

YouTube Interaction. You seem to be able to select from "Featured", "Music Videos", "Bookmarks", "Search" and more as the main YouTube playlists. YouTube playback takes place automatically in landscape orientation. (Thanks Trey)

Updated data. It's no longer 26 degrees in Aspen in December. The videos now show that it's late May and a balmy 63 degrees in San Francisco. The stock prices have also changed and reflect May 2007 rather than December 2006.

New Yahoo! logos. The stocks and weather reports sport a distinctive Y! logo missing from earlier videos.

Safari has a new "page" browse view. The end of the Safari quick tour shows a new way to browse through pages

New Maps intro. You can now see the default Maps page before a location is entered.

Email indicates "sent from my iPhone". The new tag appears to be added automatically to the text of your message as a default.

    Thanks Zack Kitzmiller

  • Yahoo!Sync installed with OS X 10.4.10

TUAW reader Dustin Johnston tipped us off that a new OS X framework is getting installed with the OS X 10.4.10 update, namely Yahoo Sync. Located in /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks, YahooSync.framework contains an embedded Yahoo!Sync application.

If you want to find it on your computer, choose Go -> Go To Folder in Finder and enter:

    /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/
    YahooSync.framework/Versions/A/Resources

Peeking inside the application and framework strings reveals that the synchronization will use a Yahoo! ID stored in Address Book and that you must (obviously) have a Yahoo! account set up in order to synchronize. It's not clear exactly what this application does, but it's likely to allow you to sync your Yahoo! calendar with iCal.

  • iPhone Crowd Control

So, any of you as hyped up and anxious to get their hands on a iPhone as I am? Well, if you're reading this I'm guessing you probably are. For those of you who are counting the moments until that sleek, shiny block of touch-screen goodness is actually in your hands, I have a word of warning for you -- especially if you intend to line up early and be the first kid on your block to have a new iPhone. This warning comes via the safety-minded folks over at the Boy Genius Report wherein they feature a document from "official" channels at AT&T which outlines how retail store managers are to handle the teeming masses who will no doubt be lining up early for the device come June 29th.

Among the methods featured in the document to help ease the situation and control the crowd, is an outline of a mock conversation where AT&T store managers explain to the stores near them why they need to stay open late and what steps they will be taking to help ensure the crowds don't spill into the surrounding stores and do all kinda damage. The document also reveals the super-secret method that will actually accomplish this miraculous controlling of the crowd. What is this miracle you may wonder? Stanchions. Yes, the proverbial "velvet rope" they use to keep people in line at events across America will be standing guard and providing security for the giant iPhone launch event.

Having been at a few Apple retail store events and openings (including the first one at the Glendale Galleria) I can attest to the fact that when Apple does almost anything, crowds of devoted users do show up -- and in really big numbers. For something like the iPhone, which really isn't just for Mac people but for anyone interested in a cool new device, I can only imagine how big the crowds are going to be. Reading this document doesn't really fill me with confidence that AT&T really has a complete grasp of what they're getting into here. I hope they do because we sure don't want a repeat of the iBook debacle from a couple years ago. So, just so I can get a rough count and maybe help AT&T realize the scope of this launch, how many of you are planning to line up early for an iPhone?
