  • TUAW Review: Higher Ground Shuttle

As a bag geek, I'm always excited to see something new and novel kinds of cases. While walking around the show floor at Macworld back in January, I was delighted to come across something I've been looking for as long as I can remember- a soft sleeve with rigid protection. The case in question turned out to be the Shuttle from Higher Ground, and I've had the chance to use and review it for the past month or so.

  • iPhone cult status examined

It is one of the biggest clichés in tech writing: Apple engenders a cult like following the likes of which no other current technology company can. It is true that Apple fans can be a bit... rabid, but that seems to be a shallow look at the phenomena.

That is why I was so interested to read this piece by Rocco Palmo on Busted Halo, an 'online magazine for spiritual seekers in their 20s and 30s.' Mr. Palmo is a devout Catholic and runs a gossipy blog dedicated to the goings on in the upper echelons of the Catholic Church by the name of Whispers in the Loggia. His article, entitled 'iPhone... God Machine or Tech Temptation' takes a look at the desire which Apple products, and the iPhone in particular, inspires in people. Palmo argues that this lust isn't a bad thing, for a number of reasons. Furthermore he says that it is Apple's creativity that draws people to its products and the fact that they just work.

I can't do the piece justice, so take a moment and give it a read. Even if you don't agree with him, you'll have to admit that it is an interesting take on the Cult of Mac.

  • iTunes: Free Monday

    Filed under:

With all the WWDC excitement last week, it took longer than usual for me to get around to the Japanese free Single of the Week. My apologies. In related iTunes news, TUAW reader Sejuru writes in to tell us that Yahoo!Japan seems to be promoting iTunes pretty heavily these days. To give some context, Sejuru writes, Yahoo! has a very high profile in Japan, dominating the online auction market in Japan, the same market where eBay crashed and burned.

    Japan 今週のシングル: 3.2.1 by Vish

  • Video: Inside Delicious Generation

Here's a distillation of demos seen at Delicious Generation. This time we're trying something a little different and using Viddler, a service that will reportedly allow you to interactively bash the quality of the video as it plays (no need to mention the interlacing, we see it). Oh, you can leave constructive, useful comments inline as well. So if you're a developer and you'd like to explain what we're seeing, that's good, because the mic at the party wasn't really getting audio past the crowd noise.

  • Is Apple aiming at Firefox?

John Lilly, COO of Mozilla, has a bone to pick with Steve Jobs and Apple. As you might imagine, John keeps an eye on the browser market space, and he was interested to see Apple port Safari to Windows. This was a big deal, but the slide above had John worried. As you can see the pie chart shows Internet Explorer's market share and what Apple would like Safari's market share to be. Notice anything?

That's right, Firefox is no where to be found. John Lilly argues that this wasn't an oversight on Apple's part, but rather a glimpse into their intentions. They want Firefox users to switch to Safari and have the web controlled by 2 dominant products coded by the two dominant OS makers. John seems to think this would be a bad thing, and I agree with him. Having a choice of browsers is good for the web, and good for people who use the web (like you!). As John points out, Safari for Windows is a good thing since it offers uses another choice, but if Apple hopes to use Safari to stifle competition... well that's not very good at all.

What do you all think? Is this a paranoid dream, or a valid worry?

  • TabExposé: Safari gets Exposé for its tabs

Move over Shiira, cuz there's another browser in town that can bring the power of Exposé to its tabs. Cocoamug Software's TabExposé enables Safari (even the new v3 beta) with a configurable shortcut key to display the current window's tabs in an Exposé-style layout. To be sure, however, it only works on the current window and the tabs that window contains; if you have more than one window open with tabs in Safari, the others will sit in the background.

TabExposé works well in Safari 3 beta on my MacBook Pro, and with extra options like applying a color bar to the top of the tabs when TabExposé is invoked, $4.90 is a very, very tiny price to pay for such a handy Safari tab management tool.

  • iGTD 1.4.4 update brings, uh, way too many new features

Something tells me the crew who writes iGTD (fortunately) never really grasped how application version systems work (for the record: I say this with the warmest of intentions; iGTD is the first GTD-based app that I really 'get' and use). Typically, a company releases a 1.0, follows up with a few 1.x.x updates to fix bugs and quirks, and maybe a few 1.x releases that add a new feature or two. But as anyone who has been following the last few minor updates can tell, the new features brought with each 1.x.x release are really worthy of major 2.x and 3.x releases. This morning I woke to just such an update (v1.4.4) that brings a landslide of new and handy feature updates, including:
    • F-key integration with Journler, endo RSS news reader, VoodooPad Pro, EagleFiler and WebnoteHappy
    • exporting smart folders added ('To complete' tab)
    • Don't forget! feature - use the Tasks menu option to display a sticky reminder about a task... click it to jump to the task
    • Send to stickies feature - use the Tasks menu option to display selected tasks as Apple Sticky note
    • E-mail feature - use the Tasks menu option to e-mail selected tasks via Apple Mail
    • MailTags 2.0. enhancement: flagged e-mails are imported as flagged tasks
    • MailTags 2.0. enhancement: a prefs setting to use the MT e-mail notes as a name for task in iGTD
    • last selected smart folder is saved and restored between launches
    • integration with Services menu (logout/login required): select a text in any app, go to app menu / Services submenu and use the 'iGTD/Put into iGTD inbox option'
    • new mode for search panel: 'Search by project name or note'
    • and much, much more
This update also includes a large batch of bug fixes, as well as enhancements to adding new items to lists that are sorted by various methods. Amazingly, iGTD is still donationware, and this new version should be available by choosing Check for Updates from the application menu, or simply by heading over to the iGTD site.

  • Write your own Quicksilver interface

We've mentioned several of Ankur Kothari's interesting Quicksilver projects. Now he's back with a kind of do-it-yourself SDK and tutorial on building your own Quicksilver interface. He offers an Xcode Project Template to get your started, along with some code explanations.

Unfortunately I'm nowhere near competent enough to make good use of this information, but those who are should find much of interest in customizing one of TUAW's favorite utilities.

  • Video: Wii Transfer

We've covered Wii Transfer before, and Riverfold has a nice video demo as well, but we couldn't pass up the opportunity to see the new version in action.

Oh, and here's a link to the .mov version.
