    Filed under:

Live reporting from Mike Rose, our man-on-the-spot, transcribed by Erica back at the TUAW desk. (Sorry about the time! I'm on Mountain Time and Mike is on Eastern.)

3:58. It's a zoo. There are probably two times as many gawkers and press than actual people in line. Mike's TUAW shirt is recognized by a German fan.

3:59. It's officially crazy time. Apple crew members have walked down back stairway to take their positions inside the store.

4:00. There are officially more camera crews on-hand than at any recent vice-presidential debate. Demo dolls and dudes are going up and down the line handing out fliers for mobile websites and PA systems with docks. The crowds are muttering. Are the doors about to open?

4:03. The crew is OUT. High fives for everyone on line--and probably a video of all this is going out this second to CNN. The Apple crew is all cheering--and well they might, given that they're all getting free iPhones from Steve.

4:05. CBS and GM building employees are leaving work, exiting the office and blinking bemused as they call family on their cell phones. "You wouldn't believe what's going on here..."

4:05. A bystander mutters: "Only in New York!". Mike says; "wrong!" The Plaza hotel across 5th ave, scaffolding across the facade, looms over the scene.

4:07. The first customers are coming out. A skinny guy with a blue shirt and a big grin holding a black bag. He holds it in the air like the head of the Gorgon. Mike can't get up to talk to him. There are about a thousand people in the way, some of them armed NYPD officers.

4:09. Mike says: "Note to self: Could not type this fast on the iPhone." The crowd is starting to mill. Popsci.com is shooting video.

4:11. More people are coming out of the store. A cop shouts out: "Hey folks, it's just people shopping. That's it folks. People do it every day." Wet blanket! He says "Move it! Nothing to see here."

    4:12. Telemundo is here.

4:13. CNBC is interviewing a buyer. The guy who bought the phone looks very happy.

4:14. MyiPhone.com guy is...oh good lord! TV New Zealand and a scrum of media re actually following the blue shirt guy around. And the Kiwi report almost dropped the iPhone. (oops!)

4:16. 40 people are watching this NZ/iPhone buyer interview.

4:18. The line goes back to Madison Avenue, all the way around to FAO Schwartz. Stretching from one expensive toy store to another.

4:19. A strange yellow motorcar has zoomed by. (And Mike gets temporarily kicked off line. More as soon as we get back to him.) And back: The line passes by an open (but empty) Porsche design store (speaking of toys). And some shoppers in Bally Shoes.

4:20. Mike is busy doing a linewalk video with the shoppers

4:20. Mike is busy doing a linewalk video with the shoppers

4:22. The Online Apple Store is DOWN.

4:25. TUAW reader PeiPei notes "Oh the irony, the CNBC live coverage of the event is only streaming in Windows Media Player."

4:28. There are still easily 300+ people in line. David Pogue is being interviewed out front. There are four satellite trucks here.

4:29. One guy with two iPhone bags tells Korean TV "I feel like I just won the lottery" Drivers and pedestrians on 5th ave ask "what's going on??

4:30. The local Starbucks stand is doing good business.

4:30. The online Apple store will be back up at 6pm PDT (9PM Eastern).

4:30. People who have only been waiting since midnight have their iPhones now. Most buyers are making a quick exit.

4:31. A lot of the excitement is on the wane. Now it's down to "just shopping". Photographers are editing pictures on their Macbook Pro's. The next batch of line-ees are getting inside.

4:32. Pogue has pulled out his iPhone to show off to reporters.

4:32. Mike is taking a quick break to upload his pictures.

4:33. Mike SCORES a free coffee! A chunk of people are going in every 2-3 minutes. The line should continue until at least 9 PM.

4:34. As the line gets processed, more and more people are joining the end of the queue

4:35. To date: Total number of persons who recognized the TUAW logo on Mike's shirt: 1. But he was very excited.

4:37. First unboxing pics on Flickr

4:38. It's getting a little darker and colder at the 5th Ave store.

4:38. It's getting a little darker and colder at the 5th Ave store. If you haven't been to the 5th ave store, it's hard to overstate how savvy the whole thing is. Every single CBS early show shoot takes place in front of a giant glowing apple logo. Genius!

4:40. Shawn king is being interviewed--or some other guy who looks like him. Raindrops begin to fall upon the waiting hordes huddled around the Apple manger.

    4:41. Ruh-roh.

4:43. The raindrops have let up--just a drop or two right now. Weather here in Colorado? 88 mile-high degrees outside those AT&T stores. Mike lets me know that (a) the coffee is good, and (b) cops are moving people along and (c) if the rain gets worse he may have to run for it.

4:45. Oddly enough this is one of the spots in NYC that smells ever so slightly of horse manure. Central Park hansom cabs linger across the street--or perhaps that's the acrid odor of the massive RDF expansion

  • Apple Store Online Down

So, now we know. Online sales of the iPhone at the Apple Store Online to begin at 6PM Pacific time. Sorry people from other time zones, you're just gonna have to wait. Or, you could always head down to a retail store and get in line like the rest of us.

It is 6pm (on the East Coast) so you should have your iPhone now (there wasn't a big wait, right?). The question is, what the heck CAN you do with it? Sure, you can make a phone call or two (and even conference people in. Sweet.). You can pick up the iPhone missing manual in August, or you can head on over to iPhoneHints right now and learn some tips and tricks. There isn't much there right now, but soon that will all change I am sure.

  • Line report: iPhone mania!

Oh, buddy. It's 4:30 in the middle of the country, lots of people are just starting to get out of work, and things are really starting to pick up now.
    • Benjamin Gilbert sends pictures from his campout at Legacy Village in Ohio.
    • Andrew Abate is lineblogging from the West Farms Mall Apple Store in Farmington, CT, where California Pizza Kitchen is apparently handing out free food.
    • Nick Bodkins sends a note from Orlando, FL, where he's sitting in line at the Millenia Mall. Apple is handing out free water there, too, and apparently security says no shopping throughout the rest of the mall.
    • Danny Perez is at the 5th Ave. Store in New York (where I believe our own Mike Rose is headed very soon), and says the feeling there is good: "There are about 300 people in line that I can tell from my location, I'm almost at the end of the line, they are giving away some free stuff. Items include, FREE Baked Caramel Popcorn (FreeEvil), Water (Water is directly from Apple - Branded by smartwater), Virgin Atlantic Airlines just gave away a gift bag with toothbrush/paste, Eye covers, Ear plugs, socks, and Lemonade. I also got some free music CD's and the best part, A FAN TO COOL OURSELVES OFF!!!"
    • And finally, the best thing I've heard today comes from Rick and Simon at the Fashion Valley Mall in San Jose, CA: The Woz is live and in person there (or was, this afternoon), and apparently the Hummer and the Segway made the trip as well.
Just under a half hour until 6pm on the East Coast, and then iPhone mania sweeps the nation. Thanks everyone for sending in all the tips, and I hope all you intrepid linesitters get your phones. I'm off to the Michigan Ave store for a report later tonight-- good luck out there.

  • It ain't easy to get an iPhone review unit

I'm not saying that Apple didn't send out any iPhone review units, but they sent out very few (probably in the single digits). It makes sense, since everyone is worked up into a froth at the moment about the iPhone. Apple doesn't need to beg publications to review this thing, they will be selling a boatload of 'em anyway.

That being said, you would think a magazine like Popular Science would be able to get their hands on an iPhone ahead of time. It would appear not so much. The emails traded with Apple are particularly amusing.

So, while you're online for an iPhone look to your left and your right.. you just might see some tech reporters anxiously hoping to get their iPhones before deadline.

  • My Date With iPhone

My soon-to-be date with the iPhone began innocently enough with the wanting. Then, obsession began to set in. Now that I'm actually in line, as of Noon Pacific time, waiting patiently at the Sherman Oaks, CA Apple store and "borrowing" a steaming cup of wi-fi, I can say my date has definitely begun in earnest. Although, as they say, waiting is the hardest part. As everyone knows, I cannot actually, formally begin my date until 6PM when the iPhone goes on sale. Until then, I will wait patiently in line with about a hundred others with similar obsessions to myself.

As I wait, several questions come into my mind. Why am I here? What will it be like when I first get my hands on one of those shiny beauties? Will there be enough iPhones for everyone (especially me)? And most importantly, shouldn't I be doing something else with my time instead of waiting in line for a phone? I don't know the answer because, as any good Psychologist would tell you, obsession isn't always rational. So, knowing I may not be completely right in the head, I will sit here, waiting, wanting, wondering, and hoping that once my iPhone and I are united, it will all be as good as I dreamt it would be. Until then, here I sit.

  • Line report: Massachusetts AT&T store

    Filed under:

Just to change things up a bit, I'm in line at my local AT&T store. OK, the truth is I live in the boonies and my "local" Apple Store is 2 1/2 hours away. But we're still having fun!

There are about 25-30 people in line as of this writing (about 4:30 PM Eastern). The store's staff have distributed pamphlets explaining the rates and plans (nothing we haven't seen yet) and a camera crew was here filming earlier. The iPhone displays have been in the store windows for about a week now, but there's still no sign of an actual phone - just anxious customers and antsy employees.

PS - I got chastised by mall security for using my camera, so I had to sneek this pic with my MacBook Pro's iSight.

Update: The line has gained about 2 customers every five minutes over the last half hour. Things should really pick up once the 5:00 work shift ends.

  • Knoxville is waiting for iPhones

    Filed under:

tuaw iphone line in knoxville tnHey, it ain't no big thing! Just the biggest launch since Macintosh, the most fundamental deliberate shift of one of the most iconic companies to ever build an empire upon Earth, right? Honestly, I was pretty surprised to see any line here in Knoxville, Tennessee. But the West Town Apple Store had a pretty decent crowd, and even the little ol' AT&T store had a showing.

But that Verizon guy? I really wanted to hug the poor dude. See the gallery for the gory details.

  • Albert.apple.com goes live

For years, Phobos and Deimos, fear and loathing, the twin moons of Mars have provided the primary web objects interface between iTunes and Apple. Apple's published storeBag and secureBag protocols provide the details showing the URL vocabulary you can use to communicate with these servers.

Today, albert.apple.com finally came to life. Via secureBag, it provides the secure activation interface for your sparkling new iPhone. And even if you don't actually own an iPhone, the web-objects-based interface makes it easy to chat up Albert, as it were.

As of today, simply launch iTunes, and paste this linked URL into Safari and you will be presented with the following message (assuming you do not actually have an iPhone attached to your computer): "There is no SIM card installed in the iPhone you are attempting to activate. Please disconnect and insert a SIM card in the iPhone. Copyright (C) 2007 Apple Inc. All rights reserved. | Privacy Policies | Terms & Conditions". Sure, it's not the same as having your own shiny new iPhone to play with, but isn't it nice to be able to talk directly to Albert?

  • iPhone: The Missing Manual

David Pogue, is there anything you can't do? He has had an iPhone for a few weeks now (one of the perks of being the New York Times tech columnist, I would imagine) and now there is news of the pending release of iPhone: The Missing Manual (it'll set ya back $20). This latest addition to the Missing Manual covers, what esle, the iPhone and will be jam packed full of tips and tricks for the iPhoner in your life.

The book will be available in August, but David has shared some of his favorite tricks a little early for all those folks who are lucky enough to get an iPhone today.

  • Selling your Mac? Erase that hard drive

Did you know that Apple, maker of the iPhone, also makes computers? It is true! You might even own one yourself! This tip is for those of you looking to sell your Mac to get an iPhone (or if you're selling it for any other reason in fact). Our friends at Small Dog Electronics have posted some tips on securely erasing your Mac's hard drive BEFORE you sell it to some random dude.

Sure, you can just nuke and pave (aka reinstall OS X), but if you're using OS X 10.4 the Disk Utility can make sure none of your data will be readable from that drive (or least not without extreme effort). Head on over to Barkings and check it out.

  • Verizon to iPhone, 'iWhatever'

    Filed under:

Verizon ain't afraid of any iPhones. Verizon COO Jack Plating sent out a memo to Verizon workers yesterday ensuring them that the only thing to fear about the iPhone is fear itself. The memo, entitled 'iWhatever,' addressed all the hype and posited that this was merely AT&T's reaction to the awesomeness that is Verizon.

He does make one good point though, AT&T's network isn't as robust as Verizon's (disclosure: I have a Verizon smartphone and I am very happy with the coverage and speeds I get).

Luckily, I think even if you don't want an iPhone you are still going to benefit from its existence. This phone will undoubtedly make other phone marks take a good hard look at the software which runs their phones. Everyone wins!

  • Line Report: Broomfield, CO Flatiron Crossing

Unfortunately, I'm the in the minority non-linewaiting party here at TUAW today. The "real" job has claimed my soul until 5pm, and then I'll be heading off to the Michigan Ave. store in Chicago to grab some interviews and pictures. But until then, my old high school buddy Josh Gray is stepping in for me-- he visited the Flatiron Crossing Apple Store in Broomfield, CO and took this short but sweet Flickr set, including the little gem above.

It doesn't look too crowded-- people are stretched out on the floor right now. But it is interesting that they've got the barrier headed all the way out of the mall. Jobs said they were opening the doors at 6 to let people from work have a chance to get there, and my guess is that as work lets out on this Friday afternoon, the lines will fill more and more.

  • Milwaukee, Tulsa Apple Stores: Your reports

    Filed under:

Apple opened two retail stores this weekend; one it Milwaukee, Wisc. and another in Tulsa, OK. As usual, we asked any TUAW operatives who may have attended to share their reports and/or pictures. So, did you go, and if you did, how was it? Let us know in the comments. Here's hoping you scored a T-shirt, the Opening Day Contest's grand prize and, dare we say it? An iPhone!

  • Realmac releases iPhone Rapidweaver theme

If you use Rapidweaver to maintain your website (we really like Rapidweaver around here), and you want to make sure it will look nice when viewed on an iPhone, check out Realmac Software's new iPhone theme for Rapidweaver. It was specifically designed for Safari and the iPhone's small display.

The iPhone theme will be a part of next month's release of Rapidweaver 3.6.2, but you can grab it today right here. While you're at it, visit their "goodies" section for iPhone wallpapers.

  • Strings in iTunes 7.3 that make us go hmmmm

This morning, I had the opportunity to download and install iTunes 7.3. Of course, one of the first things I did was to head to the package contents to see what had changed between this version and the last. Here is a collection of about a half-dozen updated strings that leapt out at me regarding the new iPhone features. I've only gone through the files in a very cursory fashion, but I thought I'd share this collection of strings that made me go 'hmmmm.'

"4320.071" = "Enabling the iPhone for disk use requires manually ejecting the iPhone before each disconnect, even when automatically syncing music."

If the iPhone has disk use then maybe we'll be able to access the OS X data directly. I'm guessing, however, that they've set it up like Apple TV with the OS in a hidden part of the disk and the data itself on another, visible section. It would be lovely if secure shell access involved nothing more than enabling disk access and editing a few OS X files.

    More as we continue...

  • In The Line: Carrier poll

Fulfilling my duties as Intrepid Blogger, I took a quick poll of the people in line here at the Apple Store Oakbrook to see which cell carrier they're on, and if they're on another (Verizon, Spring, etc.), were they willing to actually cancel -- with the fee -- their contracts.

Of the 42 people I polled (i.e. those who didn't give me the don't-talk-to-me look of death), the results came in:

    • 27 people were on AT&T.
    • 8 people were on another carrier, but didn't need to cancel their contracts (either they pawned them off or were not on contracts in the first place).
    • 7 people were on another carrier and flat-out canceled their contract, fee and all.
    • 13 times I mistakenly said "Cingular" instead of "at&t".
    • 14 people have read and/or are regular readers of TUAW.
Please note that this poll is completely scientific and 100% reflective of the iPhone purchase demographic.

  • Found Footage: iPhone shipment arrives in NYC

    Filed under:

The only thing more impressive than the long line in this video is the fact that I sat here for 3 and-a-half minutes just to see a bunch of cardboard boxes leave the back of a delivery truck (The mini ping pong table was cool, too).

Can you feel the anticipation, New Yorkers? Because it's getting out of hand.

    Thanks, Hamish!

  • Steven Levy's iPhone NOT almost stolen on live TV

    Filed under:

Update: A close analysis of the audio (thanks Brian and commenters!) indicates that the perp was actually going for the Fox reporter's microphone and not the iPhone itself. Stranger and stranger.

Oh, man, this is just getting completely out of hand. Dailymotion has a clip of Fox News interviewing Steven Levy outside the 5th Avenue Apple Store today, and just as the Newsweek writer was saying how he's one of only four people to have gotten an advance look at the iPhone... blammo, in swoops a would-be thief who accidentally grabs the reporter's microphone in his attempt to get at the iPhone.

Nobody hurt, and they apparently grabbed the guy... but c'mon, everybody, please settle down before someone gets hurt. See the video after the jump.
