  • The Ultimate iTunes Media Server

I've been toying around with the idea of building a full Mac media server for my family, but this project by James Hodge puts any ideas I had to shame. His Ultimate iTunes Media Server is built around a PowerMac G4 with an Xserve RAID for storage. Content comes by way of over-the-air HDTV to Elgato's EyeTV, ripped DVDs, and iTunes Store purchases and is delivered to three Intel Mac mini clients over a gigabit Ethernet wired network. His total equipment cost is over $10,000. I think using the $5k Xserve RAID for storage really takes this one over the top. Anybody looking for some ideas for an iTunes server should check out the complete description of James' efforts.

  • AAPL spikes $3 on iPhone battery news

Talk about your irrational exuberance: Apple's stock shot up over $3 this morning on the announcement of better-than-expected battery life for the iPhone. This pogo-stick fluctuation of the stock price on every snippet of iPhone news is a mite stressful even for those of us (like myself) who are long + buy-and-hold on AAPL, and I can only imagine the volume of Maalox that's being consumed by more active traders.

I suppose it's too much to ask, when reputable mags like Business Week are picking up the price expectations of $160 a share from slightly rabid analysts, that everyone take a deep breath and try to be patient until the phone actually ends up in the hands of customers. Really, though.

    Disclosure: I own AAPL stock.

  • Steve Jobs profile in New York magazine

Never the advocate of subtle promotion, New York magazine's cover story this week bears a simple headline over a psychedelic picture of Steve Jobs: iGod. John Heilemann's story takes a humorous and surprisingly intimate look at the nigh-mythological arc of Jobs' career, including the most common epithet applied to him by colleagues and friends alike (hint: it's anatomical), and quotes like this one from Jean-Louis Gassée describing Jobs' RDF as almost a physical force: "[Jobs is] the most powerful person I've ever met. The word charisma-in the true, Greek sense-applies. He has the power to open up your chest and put his fingers inside you." Um, okay, Jean-Louis, does 'blech' translate to French?

Naturally, with two weeks to go before some minor product launch, the story's focus is on the iPhone's potential success or downfall and the implications for Apple. On this point, the money quote is from a CEO of an unnamed but very large communications company:
"The entire [bleeping] Western world hopes that it's a case of imperial overstretch... But everybody is quietly saying, er, what if people want to buy a $500 phone? What if, er, people have been waiting for a device that does all these things? What if this thing works as advertised? I mean, my God, what then?"
    What then, indeed.

    Thanks, Henry.

  • Apple announces iPhone now delivers up to 8 hours of talk time, new glass display

    Filed under:

Talk about last minute upgrades: In a press release today, Apple has revealed a number of significant upgrades to both the iPhone's battery life and touch screen. Instead of what I believe was around 5 hours of video/talk and 16 hours of audio playback, Apple has updated the iPhone's battery life rating to the following numbers: up to 8 hours talk time, a whopping 250 hours of standby (over 10 days), 6 hours of internet use, 7 hours of video playback and 24 hours of audio playback. Of course, just like any other mobile phone, these numbers can vary depending on various factors like intermittent use and network configuration (whether features like Wi-Fi or the speakerphone are enabled, etc.).

In addition, Apple has changed the spec of the original 3.5" plastic surface of the iPhone to "optical-quality" glass, which should bring some smiles to those who were concerned about the durability of the phone's primary feature and user interface.

This is quite the update to drop on anxious customers less than two weeks from launch. I can only wonder what other tricks and unknown or upgraded features (PUSH email? HSPDA instead of EDGE?) Apple could be waiting to announce.

Update: Interestingly, this latest press release also mentions the iPhone's pricing - again at $499 and $599 for 4GB and 8GB, respectively - but makes no mention of contracts being involved with those prices. Since Apple dropped the "2-year activation required" language from their ads after originally airing them, this might offer more hope to those who aren't able to renew a contract just yet to get the discounts.

Update 2: Commenter Greg points out that Apple's competitive chart shows the Nokia N95 as a no-WiFi device, when it actually does do WiFi. We hope this error will be corrected in short order.

  • iPhone Application List

Though it's clear that many folks were pretty disappointed in the whole Web 2.0 is the iPhone SDK thing, a few designers have already started to build "applications" for the iPhone. We've already mentioned a Digg application from David Cann; now that one and many others are being gathered on a new website called simply iPhone Application List. There are already iPhone implementations of AOL IM, a basic feed reader, Twitter, YouTube, and more. And since they're written for Safari on the iPhone, you can already see (and use) them with Safari on the Mac or Windows. These apps give a better idea of just what kind of things will presumably be possible on the iPhone, even though they're not the full applications most of us (developers included) wanted to see.
