  • iPhone Licensing Agreement

    Filed under:

TUAW is pleased to bring you a gallery of the complete iPhone licensing agreement from the iPhone activation video earlier today. We haven't given it a full going-through yet (and frankly, we're not lawyers), so please let us know if you find any particularly intriguing or surprising language. It contains legalese about the terms and conditions for the iPhone software, the iTunes store and Google Maps.

    Thanks go to Michael B.

  • iTunes: Free Tuesday

Welcome to another week of iTunes: Free Tuesday. Today brings us a new, fresh collection of free singles and videos from around the world with sounds and artists to take your ears and eyes to new places. This week started off late (due to the iPhone hooplah I suppose) but has finally started updating. Here's what has updated so far.

    US Music

US: Let It Go by Marc Billz
Each week, we find a track from an artist or a band who's on the cusp of success and bring it to you for free. This week, Flatbush hardcore MC Marc Billz takes listeners on a slow-rolling tour through his neighborhood filled with tension and temptation. Don't let Billz's low-key vocal style fool you; the self-described "Rap's Johnny Cash" slings lyrical arrows on the street anthem "Let It Go." With the King of New York title up for grabs, Marc Billz is a dark horse and this track is a convincing stump speech. Look for the full-length Don't Settle For Less! coming soon on Brooklyn Bound Recordings.

US: Por la Noche by Mala Rodríguez
Each week, we find a track from an artist or a band who's on the cusp of success and bring it to you, for free, as our Canción de la Semana. Mala Rodríguez is a Spanish hip-hop rising star who has a bold rhyming style that draws heavily from American, club-centric, hip-hop jams. She unleashes quick-witted asides just as quickly as she lets verse after verse of confidence roll off of her tongue. "Por La Noche" is one of the more mid-tempo cuts from her new album Malamarismo.

US: A Distant Episode by Till Brönner
German trumpet player Till Brönner has performed with numerous eminent jazz musicians including Dave Brubeck, Tony Bennett, Michael Brecker, and Natalie Cole, and made a guest appearance on Madeleine Peyroux's latest album, Half the Perfect World. Fans of Miles Davis will enjoy his restrained, Harmon-muted sound and lyrical virtuosity. The spare and elegant "A Distant Episode" (co-written with producer Larry Klein) is this week's free Discovery Download.

  • Mac 101: Spring-loaded folders

    Filed under:

Dragging a file from one folder to another is one of the Great Innovations of Modern Times. It's like the web, or sporks. But sometimes it's a hassle: what if you want to drag a file to a folder...inside another folder? Dum dum dummm...

In comes another Great Innovation of Modern Times: the spring-loaded folder. This allows you to drag a file to another folder through a folder hierarchy. Makes no sense? Give it a try:

    1. Click and hold a file to drag it.
    2. Move the file over a folder and wait a few seconds. The folder opens.
    3. Still holding the file, drag it over another folder. That folder opens.
    4. Repeat as necessary.
Release the file when you're in the folder you want, and all the excess folders close out. You can make the process even quicker by hitting the spacebar key when you're hovering the file over the folder, instead of waiting those few second for the folder to spring-load itself.

    Nifty, eh?

[Update:] Two more great tips from readers in the comments (they could do this job for me): From serenity: "Another simple one is that you can change the time it takes for the folder to "spring" in the Finder preferences." Hit Cmd+Comma to open Finder Preferences. And another from aptenergy: "Also, if you drag your item out of a folder that's been spring loaded, it will automatically close." Thanks guys!

  • Calling John Appleseed...

Do you get the sense that Apple goofed up a bit while rushing out the iPhone activation videos? It's not just the 80GB iPhone. Aren't all fake numbers supposed to start with a 555? Anyway, yes, this is the same phone number for John Appleseed that was in the iPhone preview video from last Friday. And, yes, I did give the number a call to see what would happen thinking it would connect me to an Apple/AT&T ad. Instead, I heard "The mailbox for number 408-550-3542 is full and cannot accept new messages at this time. Please try again later."

I also dropped John Appleseed a note at his dotMac account, but he didn't reply to that either.

  • NY Post says don't get "hung up" on the iPhone

    Filed under:

NY Post contributor Glenn Fleishman writes that tens of thousands of customers will line up for the iPhone and he recommends that you not be one of them. It might be flashy, it might have lots of features, but with its small screen (compared to a laptop) and its high price tag (compared to an iPod), its lack of 3G and minimal onboard storage, and its two year calling commitment, Fleishman thinks you should wait for the next iPhone rather than buying this first release. If we weren't so busy trying to get our own iPhones to play with, TUAW might even admit that Fleishman makes several good points.

    Thanks, SimDan.

Update: Fleishman has written a follow-up post on his personal weblog. He has used the iPhone (briefly) and the column was not meant as a review.

  • Apple stores to close from 2 to 6 on Friday

Apple has just announced that its retail stores will be closed on Friday, June 29th between 2 and 6pm to prepare for the iLaunch. Many retail AT&T stores have announced they will also close between 4 and 6pm for similar reasons. Each store will start selling iPhones at 6pm local time, so we're expecting some great iPhone unboxing pictures for those of you lucky enough to live on the East coast.

As TUAW reader Fred Manning points out, we fully expect people to run through the mall shouting "The Apple Store is DOWN!". What will really, really make it special though is, as TUAW reader Brian suggests, if someone puts a giant yellow Post-it on the store. Any takers? Any takers? Send us a link to your photo via our Tip form.

    Thanks, Jonathan.

  • Help make Frenzic an iPhone app

Frenzic is an addictive puzzle game from the folks at The Iconfactory and ARTIS, which we took a look at back in February. It's really quite fun, and would be right at home on the iPhone (or iPod for that matter). I can see myself playing Frenzic while sitting on the train.

The folks at The Iconfactory pitched the idea of Frenzic for iPhone to Apple at WWDC, but they could use a little love from you, The People! Check out this post at gedblog to learn how you can pester ask Apple to make Frenzic an iPhone app. Good luck, guys!

  • iPhone line forming in NYC

What would you do if you really wanted an iPhone, lived in a major city and had lots of free time (like, say, four whole days)? You'd line up outside the Apple Store, of course!

New Yorkers started an iPhone queue last night - a full four days before the thing goes on sale. Now that's an example of desire. I want one, too, but I wouldn't sleep on the street for four days. Probably.

Update: Now, if Greg Packer - the guy who is officially 1st in this line - had sold advertising on himself, he'd have a free iPhone by Friday night. Silly Greg.

    Thanks, Dan!

  • The small print stinks: No iPod features without service plan

    Filed under:

We seem to have an answer to one of our biggest questions: Can you buy an iPhone and just use the built in WiFi and iPod features? Apparently not. According to the small print on Apple's rate plan webpage, you need to purchase a 2 year wireless service plan. This means your iPhonePod will cost you at least ($60/month * 24 months) + $500/iPhone = $1940 + $36 activation fee + tax. That's a might pricey even if unsurprising (and close to what Scott predicted). Although most media phones like Chocolate and its compatriots seem to have the same constraints, it just seems unnecessary and cruel. TUAW gives Apple's "Minimum new 2-year wireless service plan and activation fee required to activate iPhone features including iPod" a big old hometown raspberry. Boo!

Thanks to Kevin Reylek for tracking down the Activation fee.

Update: I just got off the phone with Mark Siegel of AT&T. Siegel states that all existing iPhone customers must upgrade to a new two year contract. According to Siegel, the clock starts over regardless of whether the customer is a GoPhone customer, on an existing family plan, or so forth. What remains unclear to me is if you can buy the GoPhone and agree to the 2 year commitment for the data only.

Update 2: If you *can* sign up as an existing AT&T GoPhone customer and just get the data plan, the best deal I can work out is (using "Replace a phone on my account with this iPhone"): $500 (iPhone) + $200 (2 1-year $100 cards at 25 cents per minute, includes disposable phone with purchase) + $20/month data * 24 = $1180 for 2 years plus any additional phone time via prepaid cards.

  • History of the Apple Store

Just in time for the iPhone crowds and media to descend on Apple stores around the country, SiliconUser has a quick little history of how Apple's famous retail space came to be. It all started back in 19-aught-7, when Mr. Stevonious Jobsenheimer first opened the Apple Computing Salon and General Store in little Border Junction, Wyoming...

No, only kidding. In 1996 when Jobs came back to Apple, they were struggling to come up with a good way to sell their computers at retail, and after a few bumpy years with store-within-a-stores at CompUSA, they set up a warehouse in Cupertino and went to work designing a real live Apple experience. The first try was apparently based on Apple's product matrix (and caused Jobs to famously say, "Oh God, we're screwed"), but eventually they came up with what we know today-- bright, open spaces with stations that encouraged visitors to use and play with the products. Strangely enough, SiliconUser points out that they are very much like Gap stores, which both disturbs and awes me at the same time.

So when you're standing outside your local Apple store Thursday at midnight while it rains and you stare at the growing-even-more- obsolete- than-it-already-is Treo 650 only to look up at the dry and warm Apple store and the glorious iPhones that lie inside behind the glass, just remember the good folks that designed it all for you. The money they were paid made it worth it, but the irresistible spending draw you feel while walking by is just the icing on the cake.

  • Activation Video reveals some interesting details and... an 80GB iPhone?

Oh Apple, you're so sly with the way you slip in the useful (and sometimes bizarre) details with your iPhone demo videos. In the activation video posted today, more intricacies of what and how the iPhone synchs have been revealed with a walk-through of how to get one's iPhone set up at home with iTunes. First, it appears as though Apple and AT&T have thought of just about everything:

The setup asks whether you already have an AT&T account and you'd just like to add your iPhone to it, or if you're creating a brand new account. Users can also activate two or more phones all from the comforts of their pajamas and iTunes.

  • Apple posts iPhone activation video

    Filed under:

We know what you're thinking, "This isn't 'The Unofficial iPhone Weblog,' man! Enough already!" If it's any consolation, you'll only have to deal with our iPhone fascination for a few more days. After that....well, after that it will be a full-blow obsession. We can't help it.

Apple has released an iPhone setup and activation video that guides new users through the process of setting up their iPhones. The whole process is handled by iTunes, of course. In fact, you can activate your phone from home, and not while standing in the crowded and noisy mall. Very nice.

The video also explains how to sync your data via iTunes (it works just like an iPod, of course) and features the same well groomed, well lit and hypnotic man - dressed just like Steve, mind you - from the previous video.

  • iPhones on the ground!

The iPhones are on the ground! According to AppleInsider the first shipments of iPhones have arrived from Asia and are under armed guard pending their release on Friday. They note dryly that such guards are normally reserved for diamonds, gold, and such.

Apparently Apple is also going so far as to ban cellphones and notebooks with built-in iSights from their back storerooms so as to prevent pictures from leaking out. This is crazy; the next thing you know they'll be shutting down traffic to transport them! The funny thing, though, is that these precautions probably are reasonable.

  • AT&T and Apple announce service plans, iTunes activation for iPhone

Here we go again folks: this time it's a double-dose of PR announcements from Apple and AT&T that finally answer some of our biggest questions about service plans and activation for the iPhone. First up: the iPhone will work with any of AT&T's service plans, but they have put together three bundle plans that include unlimited data, Visual Voicemail (apparently not included if choosing a standard plan), 200 SMS and of course, roll-over minutes and unlimited mobile-to-mobile calling. To quote Mr. Jobs, who clearly must have had some influence on this 'give them a simple package' approach: "We want to make choosing a service plan simple and easy, so every plan includes unlimited data with direct Internet access, along with Visual Voicemail and a host of other goodies." Yes, Steve Jobs is quoted as saying 'goodies.' These bundle plans - which all include the aforementioned features like unlimited data - work like so:
    • $59.99 for 450 minutes
    • $79.99 for 900 minutes
    • $99.99 for 1,350 minutes
Family plans are also available, though the press release makes no mention of what they are. Also, a $36 activation fee is required for all new plans.

Speaking of activation, the second press release should offer some relief to those worried about being able to unbox their own iPhone or waiting for every phone to get activated in the store. Apple and AT&T have announced that iPhones users will be able to "activate their new iPhones using Apple's popular iTunes(R) software running on a PC or Mac in the comfort and privacy of their own home or office." iTunes will guide users through choosing a service plan, authorizing their credit and activating the iPhone, after which they will of course be able to manage the synching process of all their bookmarks, contacts and iTunes media.

Considering unlimited data is included, these plans sound like pretty good deals. Top it all off with lines that should move pretty quickly in and out of Apple and AT&T stores, and we all might just make it through this weekend yet.

  • Hidden Windows BSOD in Leopard beta

Oh Apple devs, you are so funny. In a move that's sure to bring on the flames from the Mac vs. PC crowd, it looks like Leopard's developers have left this little jokey joke in Leopard's Finder that's been making the rounds-- when a Windows share becomes unreachable or fails to connect appears in the Finder (apparently this is the default for a PC view, thanks commenters), the image that shows up is none other than the BSOD. Sure, Apple, kick 'em when they're down.

We're not sure if this is something that's just a placeholder in the beta, or if it's a real easter egg that will be in the final copy of Leopard (doubtful, despite the fact that it would make diehard Mac users chuckle every time they saw it while trying to hook up to a Windows share), but either way, take it for what it is right now, a joke, and laugh.

  • Wii Transfer 2.3

    Filed under:

When I was at WWDC I had the pleasure of sitting down with Manton Reece, developer of Wii Transfer, and chatting about his cool little application. He showed off a version that wasn't quite ready for prime-time during the interview, but now it is available for download.

Wii Transfer, in case you don't recall, allows you to access media from your Mac on your Wii. It also converts movies you might have on your Mac into a format that will play on your Wii. New in Wii Transfer 2.3 is:
    • Playback of unprotected AAC's is supported
    • UI has been overhauled
    • Better use of the Wii remote button
    • A snazzy new icon
Overall, this is the coolest application that I have no use for, since I don't have a Wii yet. Wii Transfer costs $14 and there is a demo available.
