  • Delibar 0.9: del.icio.us menu gains performance and custom list options

It's been a while since we've mentioned Delibar, the del.icio.us client from Shiny Frog that gives you access to all your bookmarks from the menubar, but a recent v0.9 update brings some noteworthy new features and enhancements. While you could already sort your bookmarks into nested folders based on the tags you apply to each bookmark, this new version now allows you to chose a flat tag list to sort by (meaning: bookmarks are sorted into one folder by the first tag you apply to them). Check out the other goodies in this new version:
    • You can now set a global hotkey for popping up Delibar menu
    • Reloading bookmark no longer prevent you from using Delibar while loading
    • Delibar is a LOT faster
    • Holding down ⌥ when looking at a bookmark will reveal its actual URL
    • Overall graphics improvement, more compact "actions" menu
Delibar is one of my favorite del.icio.us utilities and one of the apps that allowed me to stop bookmarking things in browsers altogether, which has the additional benefit of letting me use any browser I want without worrying about keeping anything in sync. Now that I can call Delibar with a hotkey and browse my del.icio.us bookmarks by typing a few keys in the Delibar list, I wish its developer offered a donation link.

Delibar is (apparently) freeware and available from Shiny Frog's website.

  • Random acts of Mac kindness

I was shopping in a large box electronics store yesterday afternoon (let's call it "Wiring Town:), when I happened to overhear a woman and her daughter ask a salesman about which camcorders would work best with her "Apple." After fumbling around for a few seconds, he admitted he didn't really know, but finally concluded that she'd probably be best off with one that writes to mini recordable DVDs. I just couldn't help myself, so I waited for him to wander off and then approached her. I told her that he'd given her terrible advice and that she really should go home, get online and do some research. She thanked me and I then excused myself; as I was walking away I heard her chuckle amusedly to her daughter about what zealots "Apple people" are. Now, of course, I'm a big time Apple blogger and all (yeah right), but I couldn't help but wonder: what other company could inspire perfect strangers to do its bidding the way Apple does? So, dear TUAW readers, do you perform random acts of Mac kindness? Do you have any good stories? Please share them in the comments.

  • iTunes: Free Tuesday

Welcome to another week of iTunes: Free Tuesday. Today brings us a new, fresh collection of free singles and videos from around the world with sounds and artists to take your ears and eyes to new places. This week features a whole bunch of new US Videos including episodes of Top Chef and Ice Road Truckers.

    US Music

US: Love Song by Sara Bareilles
Each week, we find a track from an artist or a band who's on the cusp of success and bring it to you, for free, as our Single of the Week. This week, Sara Bareilles delivers a jaunty pop song driven by some driving piano work which offsets the radio-ready form lying underneath. Bareilles takes the love song of the title and puts a spin on things (she's not going to write you a love song, but of course in saying that, she already has . . . get it?). Those looking for a break from the bubblegum might do well with Bareilles' more thoughtful pop smarts.

US: Una Página Doblada by Orishas
Each week, we find a track from an artist or a band who's on the cusp of success and bring it to you, for free, as our Canción de la Semana. Orishas is a Cuban group that specializes in fusing hip-hop with Afro-Cuban traditional styles. In the music of Orishas, the horns are just as heavy as the beats. "Una Página Doblada" brings out the funk with a heavy dose of hip-hop style.

US: Losing the Will to Survive (Beyond the Wizard's Sleeve Reanimation) by Findlay Brown
Findlay Brown is a songwriter from the U.K. whose tunes might be described as 21st-century folk-pop songs. He has the soft, soothing voice of a troubadour, but he's using every sonic trick in the book to take the music beyond the pale. Expect echoing effects, atmospheric sounds, and swirling blips and bleeps. "Losing the Will to Survive" has all of the emotional appeal of a Simon and Garfunkel song but sounds as if it's being beamed in from Mars.

  • Widget Watch: Tweet Ahead for scheduling Twitter posts

Twitter means many things to many people, but to some it is more or less a mini-blogging service, offering users a streamlined blogging platform that allows for both posting and syndication via a wide variety of methods. One downside of Twitter, however, is the inability to schedule posts ahead of time. Sure, there's always been the web-based TweetAhead, but now that service has been packaged in a Dashboard widget. Offering a simple interface, you simply need to flip the widget over to enter your Twitter credentials and set your time zone; after that, you're all set to enter tweets and specify a time for them to be posted (but be sure to heed the time zone instructions on the back of the widget).

Strangely, after tinkering with both the TweetAhead web app and this Dashboard widget, I can only get either to work intermittently. Sometimes the tweets I schedule get posted, sometimes they don't. I assume this could be due to Twitter possibly not offering any official methods for actually doing this, but that's only a guess.

Still, if you have better luck with these services, they can be a handy tool for anyone who wants to schedule tweets in the future.

  • Aperture to Picasa plugin

Having just gotten a decent camera I've recently discovered the joys of Aperture. As a long standing Flickr user, I immediately installed Frazier Speirs excellent Aperture to Flickr plugin. For those inclined towards Google's Picasa instead, however, there is now a new plugin that performs a similar function for that service. The Aperture to Picasa Web Albums plugin offers support for creating new albums, conversion of Aperture keywords to Picasa tags, and an Album selector with cover images.

The Aperture to Picasa Web Albums plugin is in beta is a free download from Übermind.

  • Cocktail 3.8 brings over 100 new features

    Filed under:

Cocktail 3.8, the Tiger Edition of the indispensable Mac utility, brings with it a host of new features. Not least amongst these new features is a gorgeous UI overhaul, which makes Cocktail not only useful but a pleasure to use. For the uninitiated Cocktail is a small app that lets you control a number of things about your Mac, which normally are beyond the powers of the everyday Mac user.

Beyond the new look, Cocktail 3.8 boasts over 100 new features, including:
    • Fine grained control of Spotlight (you can enable/disable Spotlight for disks)
    • Lots of new logging
    • New ways to tweak the UI of a variety of Apple apps (including Safari, Mail, and Finder)
A single user license costs $14.95, though there is a free trial available.

    Thanks, nevrozel.

  • Prairie Home Companion introduces 'iGod'

    Filed under:

It's an interesting coincidence (or... is it?) that on the same week New York magazine goes with a cover slug of 'iGod' for its Steve Jobs/iPhone article, Garrison Keillor (that handsome devil on the right) and the gang of upstanding citizens behind public radio favorite A Prairie Home Companion do a joke with an similar punchline. On the June 16th program, during the Guy Noir (PHC's resident detective) sketch, one of the characters suggests a perfect gift for Father's Day:

Tim Russel: Well, I read about this new iGod they're putting out.
    Garrison Keillor: iGod?
TR: The people who put out the iPod. It plays sermons and you just delete the parts you don't like.

Hmm, sermon editing on the fly, very nice. Since my wife is going to be a rabbi, and my father-in-law was just elected bishop of his Lutheran synod, this audio player would really come in handy for me. Too bad I didn't get it for Father's Day this year!

You can read the script of the Guy Noir sketch here, or listen to it here (starts at 19:45 in).

    Thanks Heidi!

  • Webjimbo: access Yojimbo over the Internet

My Mac life now firmly resides in Yojimbo, the excellent snippet/information manager from Bare Bones. The only problem with this arises when I'm away from my home computer. Of course Yojimbo does offer .mac syncing, but that doesn't always work that well and sometimes I'd like access to my information from a public or friend's computer. Developer Adrian Ross must have been been in such a situation as he is now working on a way to access Yojimbo notes from across the Internet. His Webjimbo software basically turns your Mac into a specialized web server that allows you to access your Yojimbo notes in a browser from any Internet connected computer.

When you point your browser to port 8888 you'll actually get something that looks a lot like Yojimbo right in your browser (as you can see above). You can see your folders, search for notes, create new notes, etc. Unfortunately, there are some limitations. "Note editing is plain text only. You can view formatted notes (including attachments), but if you edit them formatting and attachments will be lost." Further, encrypted notes are not be accessible.

How useful you find this will of course depend on your willingness to keep your Mac on all the time. It's also necessary to point out that anytime you run a server you open yourself to potential security concerns. Nonetheless, Webjimbo looks like an impressive project. As of right now it's in closed beta, but Adrian is inviting testers to contact him for an invitation. Webjimbo will be shareware when it ships, but no pricing has yet been announced.

  • Oh Canada: iPhone not coming anytime soon

    Filed under:

Poor beleaguered iPhone fans in the Great White North are apparently in for a long wait. In a Globe and Mail article, the CFO of Canada's lone GSM provider Rogers Communications is quoted as saying: "The truth is we aren't very far with Apple.... They're concentrating on this launch and the U.S., and when they decide to turn their mind to other markets, we'll be in line."

Well at least this suggests that Rogers will eventually carry the iPhone. We earlier mentioned a report that they "had not announced their intentions to carry the iPhone." So our friends up north will just have wait, but at least there's reason to hope.

  • iPhone cult status examined

It is one of the biggest clichés in tech writing: Apple engenders a cult like following the likes of which no other current technology company can. It is true that Apple fans can be a bit... rabid, but that seems to be a shallow look at the phenomenon.

That is why I was so interested to read this piece by Rocco Palmo on Busted Halo, an 'online magazine for spiritual seekers in their 20s and 30s.' Mr. Palmo is a devout Catholic and runs a gossipy blog dedicated to the goings on in the upper echelons of the Catholic Church by the name of Whispers in the Loggia. His article, entitled 'iPhone... God Machine or Tech Temptation' takes a look at the desire which Apple products, and the iPhone in particular, inspires in people. Palmo argues that this lust isn't a bad thing, for a number of reasons. Furthermore he says that it is Apple's creativity that draws people to its products and the fact that they just work.

I can't do the piece justice, so take a moment and give it a read. Even if you don't agree with him, you'll have to admit that it is an interesting take on the Cult of Mac.
