- iPhone: "Type What I Mean"
One of the features I'm most looking forward to on the new iPhone is the new "Type What I Mean" (or TWIM, a la DWIM) auto-correction. With TWIM, the iPhone automatically scans your input looking for common misspellings and letter inversions. Yes, I can certainly see where this can be a problem when the iPhone starts correcting things that weren't wrong but I'm pretty sure that Apple is smart enough to include a "learn" feature so your Saduns don't turn into Sudans.

TUAW reader Evan DiBiase was recently poking around in http://phobos.apple.com/storeBag.xml.gz, one of the several special addresses iTunes uses to define ways you can connect to its store. In it, he found two particularly interesting keys, namely appletv-youtube-auth-url and appletv-youtube-url. Evan writes in a blog post that since Apple has already announced YouTube/AppleTV integration, this change to storeBag may indicate an imminent update to AppleTV. Certainly this is a step in the right direction.

Filed under: TUAW Tips, Beta Beat
Ron Popeil, the patron saint of gadget vendors, has a saying: "Set it and forget it." And, as with so many of Saint Ron's utterances, we sometimes miss how deep and meaningful these lessons are in our daily lives. Take Safari 3 for example. After switching to the new beta, I suddenly started seeing pop-up ads. Lots and lots of those annoying little windows. And this was, of course, because I had so long ago set my Safari pop-up blocker and then forgotten about it.
Now that I had upgraded, it was time for another "set it and forget it" moment. I opened my Safari menu and sure enough, "Block Pop-Up Windows" was unchecked. So I selected it and my pop-ups went away. Hopefully this post will help some of you to do the same.

Apple's iCal Leopard page reveals that the upcoming Leopard version of iCal will support
Read | Permalink | Email this | Commentsa subset ofCalDAV, the distributed authoring and versioning calendar protocol. CalDAV allows collaborative creation and maintenance of shared calendars and events. With the new iCal, you won't have to send around a memo saying "give me your open dates in November". Instead, you can use iCal's "Auto Pick" capabilities to select a meeting time when everyone is free using their shared CalDAV calendars. (And, if your office uses an iCal room reservation system, you can even pick the room and block out the time you need it.) Of course, this new technology only works if everyone in the office--including that Jim-guy in the corner office who still refuses to switch from Windows--is in on the calendaring system.Комментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Software, Video, Odds and ends, Internet Tools
The Departed finally netted Martin Scorsese an Academy Award that many felt was long overdue. I personally haven't seen it yet (I know, I know), but the film has just become notable for another reason: Scorsese used iChat to direct one of its final shots. As the monstrous Macenstein tells the summarized story from a Blackmagic Design case study on the film, filming had wrapped in LA, but Scorsese called for a re-shoot of one scene. The only problem was: he was in NY, and the crew was still in LA. The solution? The crew set up a Mac and "aimed iChat at the video tap on the camera" so Scorsese could view the action in NY (note the interesting use of calling the iSight + iChat setup as simply 'iChat'). A microphone and speaker system were also set up so Scorsese could call the shots as he was viewing footage in real time.

Reader Elizabeth D sends a note that Amazon.com's Leopard page has been updated (from the sparse set of details that we first saw there). It's now available for presale, as well, and buyers haven't wasted any time-- as of this writing, it is the number one bestseller on the Software list.
Now, Elizabeth noted that the release date was supposedly slated for October 31st, but I don't see that anywhere on the page. As far as I can tell, Amazon is just saying "October 2007." That's not real different from what we've heard before, and between you and me, I wouldn't make any major plans based on Amazon release dates alone. Then again, it's just another brick in the wall of evidence-- the odds are better all the time that we'll see this cat by Halloween.Комментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Hardware, Video, Odds and ends, iPhone
Or so says this ad. Mac Rumors isn't sure what the deal is on this either, but this unofficial ad by Alec Sutherland, Anthony Hechanova, and Todd DosSantos is a neat little tribute to both New York and the gadget that's going to take over the world at the end of the month.
And forgive me if I'm reading a little too much into this, but how cool is all of this? It's 2007, and we're going to be walking around carrying little multitouch screens with "no buttons." Say what you will about the whole "Sweet Solution" fiasco, but dude-- we're living the future.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:
