- ZFS to be the default file system in Leopard?
Filed under: OS, Rumors, WWDC, Apple, Leopard
Steve is gonna be mad. You remember all those secret features that Leopard is supposed to have? And how Steve is going to wow us all with them at WWDC? Well, it looks like a little birdie, in the form of a big tech company's CEO, just let the whole world into one of those secrets. Mac Rumors points out that Jonathan Schwartz told an audience at a Sun event that the default filesystem in Leopard will be ZFS.
We've known for awhile that Leopard will support ZFS, so that wasn't too shocking. This is the first anyone has heard about ZFS being the default filesystem for Leopard though. Why is this a big deal? Well, ZFS is a filesystem that Sun built from the groundup to address modern needs at the filesystem level. ZFS is a 128bit filesystem meaning it can theoretically hold up to 16 exabytes worth of information across multiple devices (an exabyte, in case you don't know, is about 1,073,741,824 gigabytes so the ZFS can hold 17,179,869,184 GB of data though that would be many, many harddrives). Wikipedia has a full explanation of ZFS, which highlights all the cool features.
I suppose we'll all find out on Monday.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Rumors, iPhone
Yes, the commercials say "2 Year Activation". Yes, I said that it looked like prepaid options were out of the picture. This came a few weeks after after we had heard rumors about prepaid iPhone codes. This evening, Christopher Price over at Phone News dropped me a note and we briefly chatted back and forth. He pointed me to an article he'd written about newly launched AT&T options for pay as you go customers.
Price thinks prepaid isn't dead despite what you see in those commercials. The new AT&T feature packages look as if they're ready to bring prepaid phone services to a new level. So 2-year-contract? No 2-year-contract? Prepaid? No prepaid? I'm just getting whiplash. What do you think?
Oh and by the way: that commercial Scott posted earlier today? Check out the very end and see if you notice...what's missing.
Update: Commercial is LIVE at Apple. No "2 Year Contract"--although the earlier commercials still say that.
Update 2: TUAW Reader Steve reports that he's not seeing the "2 Year Contract" line on the live repeats of the first 3 TV ads either. Can any other readers confirm that these have changed as well?
Update 3: TUAW Reader Gruff reports that the text is now missing from all the online Apple ads.

http://www.tuaw.com/2007/06/06/contract-free-iphones-again/#comments - Workaround for iTunes Plus files on TiVo
Filed under: Multimedia, iTunes
I have a TiVo that's on my wireless network. Occasionally, I use it to listen to the music that lives on my iMac as I cook or what have you. It's known that music purchased from the iTunes store won't play via TiVo, and I was hoping that the DRM-free iTunes Plus upgrade would change that.
Wrong.
TiVo still sees them as "format Purchased AAC audio file not mp3 or convertible to mp3." Luckily, The Apple Blog has a workaround. Simply convert your iTunes Plus tracks to either AAC or Mp3, and the file type in iTunes will be changed to "AAC audio file" or "MPEG audio file" respectively. TiVo likes that.
Yes, this will result in quality loss, but my television speakers hardly do the music justice in the first place, so who cares?Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:
http://www.tuaw.com/2007/06/06/workaround-for-itunes-plus-files-on-tivo/#comments - Party with TUAW at WWDC
Filed under: WWDC, TUAW Business
Monday, June 11 is going to be a big day. Oh sure, Jobs and Co. are going to lay some heavy fun stuff on us in the morning. And that afternoon the blogosphere will implode, and Engadget will liveblog the whole thing. But the night will host the veryfirstsecond official TUAW meetup.
What better place to mull the latest iPhone announcements, or chuckle over the Finders-of-yon than San Francisco's own House of Shields? I hear tell Merlin Mann has made an appearance at the venerable watering hole, so who knows what other Mac masters might appear? *(Please note, I've no idea if Merlin will even be on the West Coast next week.) Anyway, House of Shields is about five minutes from the Moscone, so we're hoping no one is troubled by travel issues.
You can see an invite of sorts over here on Upcoming. Since the place is pretty much a bar, I'm thinking you'll have to be 21 to attend, sorry folks (consolation prize info coming tomorrow). The party starts at 8pm, and we've got a few drink tickets for the imbibing. Giveaways start at 10pm. We hunt Zunes for sport at midnight.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Video, Apple, Found Footage, iPhone
Apple is airing yet another fantastic iPhone ad. It hasn't made it to the iPhone TV ad website yet, but an enterprising person has posted it to YouTube. This ad focuses on the web browsing functionality of the iPhone. This is a full version of Safari, and it takes you to the real internet, not a slimmed down mobilized version.

Update: Apple has posted the ad in full QuickTime glory. Check it out. And it would seem that the YouTube version was uploaded by a plucky MacRumors reader. Good job!Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:
http://www.tuaw.com/2007/06/06/found-footage-just-the-internet-on-your-phone/#comments - Rumors: iPhones without contracts? Probably not
Over at iPhone Matters, Tanner Godarzi asks whether you'll be able to buy an iPhone without a new contract, speculating that stores with extra inventory may allow just that. I think that's pretty unlikely. The commercials clearly state "Use requires a minimum new 2-year activation plan". Godarzi also suggests that you might be able to add an iPhone to an existing AT&T contract, which sounds at least a bit more realistic to me.Contract details, specifically the complete lack of them, continue to keep many possible customers away from making their purchasing decisions. How many people do you know who have said "I might get an iPhone--if it turns out I can afford it"? With rumors of $70 per month data plans, it could be a very expensive choice.
