  • Versions: a delicious Subversion client

Source code versioning isn't something that usually gets attention here on TUAW. Subversion, the versioning tool of choice, is largely accessed via the command line to check in and out source, however, the people behind Made by Sofa decided that Subversion needed a nice looking client, so they built one. Versions is just entering a private beta, so be sure to sign up if you are interested in seeing what all the fuss is about. Their website is a little light on the details at the moment, but they promise that you will be able to doing everything that you could do via the command line with Versions, and enjoy a nice GUI to boot.

    What's not to like?

    Thanks, Andreas Creten.

  • 10 things wrong with the iPhone, from someone who has never used one

There is no denying that the iPhone has enjoyed a ridiculous amount of hype. After years of rumors the much heralded iPhone will be a reality in a few short weeks, and the press (including blogs) have been falling all over themselves writing breathless posts, articles, and odes to the wonders of the iPhone. Never mind that much of what it does isn't groundbreaking (that's usually the case with Apple's products. It isn't the features, but how they go together), the iPhone is a game changer.

Given all this positive press it was only a matter of time before the backlash began. That's when the very same websites that couldn't get enough of the iPhone decide that it is time to bash it. And so you get posts like this one on Red Ferret Journal that lists '10 things you should know about touchscreens before June 29th.' The litany of woe that will befall anyone using an iPhone seems pretty daunting. It looks like you won't be able to make a single call on your iPhone before grease, scratches, and sunlight render the thing useless.

Some of these points about touchscreens are valid, but I think it would be wise to save the criticism, and praise, until you have actually used an iPhone. A shocking idea, isn't it?

  • TUAW Tip: Apple TV, iPod and more can sync photos from Aperture

Since I committed to stepping up to Aperture from iPhoto, I've been slowly learning that Aperture really isn't left out in the cold in terms of integrating with other applications or syncing photos to devices like the iPod and Apple TV. If you don't have Aperture installed, you simply won't see it as an option in things like Apple's system-wide Media Browser or iTunes for photo synching; that's what caught me, since I've been running my entire iTunes library on an older iMac downstairs, and Aperture on my MacBook Pro. Today I decided to tinker with a few things by plugging an iPod into my MacBook Pro, and suddenly I caught this option in iTunes for Aperture. This setting also appears in the sync options for the Apple TV as well, and works just as you expect; you can chose to sync your entire photo library, or you can pick and chose albums (or Projects, as they're called in Aperture), complete with image counts for every album in the list.

This should be great news for anyone who, like me, previously thought Aperture couldn't play with all the system-wide integration that iPhoto enjoys.

  • Apple working on a GPS unit?

It wouldn't be Sunday on the Mac web without a little wacky rumor to keep us interested. A German magazine by the name of Focus has a brief item today claiming that Apple is working on a GPS unit for cars. The article goes on to say that these units would be available exclusively for Mercedes during their the first 6 months of existence and then spread to other car manufacturers.

Will an Apple branded GPS unit be coming to your car in 2009? I'm going to go ahead and say this isn't very likely. It would be more likely that iPhone 2.0 has built in GPS and some sort of car mount. That's a rumor I could get behind (though to be clear I have no inside information about any of this).

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

  • Leopard's new menubar is hideous

I haven't watched the keynote yet, and I've been spending most of my time looking through the other new features of Mac OS X Leopard. After I found that non-transparent menubar mod for Leopard, however, I can't get over how hideous that new menubar really is. I also hate to say it, but Apple's secrecy with this UI change until now screams 'Cupertino borrowed one of Redmond's photocopiers' (the new Windows Vista, for those who haven't seen it, contains what many - including myself - consider to be a literally dizzying overabundance of transparent window borders and menus).

Seriously: what is Apple thinking by turning the menubar nearly invisible, but keeping the 'just slightly' translucent aspect and white color of previous menus? I think this looks absolutely dreadful, as it doesn't even look like the menubar and the menus have anything to do with each other anymore, and I'll be damned if Apple takes the actual menus this translucent as well. In fact, if they went that over the edge, I could comfortably say that I wouldn't buy a copy of Leopard until someone developed a modification that switches the menubar and menu back from the brink of "hey look, Vista went transparent!"-ness (of course, a simple Apple-provided checkbox in System Preferences would do just fine as well).

Given Peter Maurer's mod and disinterest in this change surfacing from others, I can only hope that more voice their opinion - whether they do or don't like it - and that Apple listens if it the consensus on this menubar change turns out to be a thumbs down. After all, Leopard still is a developer-only beta, and October is still a long way away.

  • Leopard Boot Camp "fast switching" disappears

Last week we pointed to an interesting addition to Apple's Leopard Boot Camp page: support for faster switching between Windows and OS X using safe sleep in OS X and hibernation in Windows. Well apparently something has changed. As Mac Rumors notes, Apple's page itself has been altered and references to the faster switching have disappeared. Originally it the page included the following:
Leopard brings a quicker way to switch between Mac OS X and Windows: Just choose the new Apple menu item "Restart in Windows." Your Mac goes into "safe sleep" so that when you return, you'll be right where you were. It's much faster than restarting the computer each time. Likewise, a "Restart in Mac OS X" menu item in the Boot Camp System Tray in Windows makes for a faster return to Mac OS X. With Windows hibernation enabled, you can pick up where you left off.
Mac Rumors has a Google cache of the page that shows the original text. Now Apple's page is simply missing that section. I hope this returns in the final release, because it looked like a great feature.

  • Mac Daddies: Last-minute Father's Day gifts

    Filed under:

If you've been procrastinating like me on getting a Father's Day gift (it doesn't mean I love you any less, Dad, it's just the way I'm wired) there's a few options at the last minute. XtraLean Software, makers of TUAW fave ImageWell, are offering a Father's Day sale of $10 off the webpage creation tool ShutterBug; with your $29.95 you also get a free copy of the ImageWell Xtras, normally a $15 value.

In my family the iPhoto books are extremely popular, with updates every other year so that the grandparents can have coffee-table evidence of their progeny's progeny. Granted, they won't get there today, but you can promise something to look forward to. If you want to do something extra-personal, throw a few pictures into a Comic Life page and write a few funny captions, then hustle over to Staples and pick up some inkjet magnet paper. Putting pictures on a magnet somehow gives them added permanence.

Whatever gifts you give or receive (personally, I'm the happy owner of a new portable hammock, thanks sweetie!) all of us here at TUAW wish all you Mac Daddies a happy Father's Day!
