- Leopard's Core Animation to herald more than shiny tricks

Steve Jobs demoed some exciting features last year that are coming in Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, but one of the most fundamentally cool that might have been overlooked is Core Animation. While it certainly isn't quite a feature that us end users can directly click on and use, it is an entirely new set of user interface paradigms and tools Apple has developed for 3rd parties to build into their apps (i.e. - stuff we will be able to see, click and and say 'wow' to). Since Apple has been putting developer builds into the hands of people that need them, some of the most notable of these devs have announced Leopard-only versions of their apps, including Allan Odgaard (TextMate), Wil Shipley (Delicious Library) and Gus Mueller (FlySketch and also VoodooPad). Citing various reasons for going Leopard-only, Core Animation has remained one of the constant but underestimated factors for diving into Leopard and not looking back.
To help explain more of just what is so interesting in Core Animation, Wired's Scott Gilbertson has just written up a great piece elaborating a bit more on just how much Core Animation will change how user interfaces in both Mac OS X and 3rd party apps are thought about and designed. Gilbertson includes a few choice quotes from notable 3rd party developers, and even manages to point out that, in a few ways, the so-called 'Delicious Generation' might have been a little ahead of their time by experimenting with animation and new forms of UI.

David Pogue, the NY Times' answer to Walt Mossberg (as distinct from "This WSJ writer, nicknamed Uncle Walt, hosted two technology legends at a 2007 conference" -- that's the Jeopardy answer to Walt Mossberg) hasn't reviewed Parallels 3.0 yet, at least not in print. On his blog, however, Pogue has given the new version an enthusiastic thumbs up.
Pogue uses Dragon NaturallySpeaking on Windows to do a large chunk of his writing (Mac voice-rec tools like TrueVoice or iListen, though available, did not measure up to his needs) which has meant either lugging two laptops around or, more recently, Boot Camp. Up until now the USB audio support in Parallels hasn't worked well enough for speech recognition to go smoothly. With the 3.0 release and an XP virtual machine (Vista was still too resource-intensive), Pogue is now running the voice-rec app completely flawlessly and happily.
Pogue's post ends with a reminder of how the platform equation is changing; he writes, "Whether you're a Mac person or a Windows person, the point is that you can now run 100 percent of the world's computer software on a single machine, faster and more easily than ever." Those crazy kids behind MacHeist and My Dream App are at it again, this time bringing you a night of drinks, demos, and developers. The Delicious Generation party will feature live demos of upcoming software from prominent Mac developers including Austin Sarner of AppZapper and the Pixelmator team. Mac Media and Developers get in for free, and a select few of us unwashed masses will be admitted to mingle amongst the Mac digerati. For those who don't make it in, there will be a live screencast of the demos, as well as archives of the video for those of you who have more important things to do on the night of the 13th.
Scott and Victor will be there representing TUAW, and maybe even giving away some schwag. Party on!

I'm the new guy on staff here at TUAW, and from what I've been told, I get to lay claim to something none of these other guys want to: I'm a die-hard gamer, and while playing games on a Mac might be like performing Shakespeare in Russian, I do it as much as I can (the play games on the Mac thing, not the Russian thing).
So you can expect to hear about more stuff like this: the good folks over at Bare Feats ran the new MacBook Pros (with the Santa Rosa chipset) through the benchmarking gears and found what you might expect: they're pretty darn fast. Not quite as fast as the Mac Pro with a Radeon X1900 XT in the video card slot, but the new MBP did beat out the quad core Mac Pro running with the Geforce 7300 GT in 4 of the 5 tests they did-- gaming like that on a laptop is very, very nice.
The new MacBook didn't fare quite as well-- the integrated video chip in that one, says Bare Feats, is "un-optimized" for 3D, even if it's fine for movie playback. Unfortunately, none of the Apple rigs tested come even close to Alienware's standard PC box (the Mac Pro ran at 83 fps on Quake 4, and the Area-51 7500 ran at... ummm... 135.7), but if you, like me, want to frag a few noobs in between, y'know, working with a UI that actually makes sense, the new MacBook Pro will do you right.

For all the wonders of the MagSafe connector -- scores of marriages saved and pets kept from the pound, as laptops that would have otherwise experienced impromptu gravity testing remained happily on stable surfaces -- there's been a remarkable gap in the charger offerings for Apple laptops since its introduction: no sanctioned car chargers. This is a point of contention for those of us who use our laptops as DIY entertainment centers on long trips, and has led to some family tensions in my household ("Why do the kids have to watch DVDs on MY machine?!?").
MCT does offer a homebrew solution that grafts a MagSafe connector onto a Kensington AC/DC adapter for universal chargeability, but at a fairly steep price; the basic conversion of a MacBook or MBP adapter to work with a DC transformer is cheaper, but still a little scary. With these limitations in mind, I went for a somewhat more traditional solution: an inexpensive, 96-watt inverter (DC to AC converter; I got mine for $10 on woot.com but there are other models and other deals) coupled with the lowest-wattage adapter available that would still run my MacBook Pro. In this instance, that's the 60-watt MacBook adapter, which runs and charges the MBP under all but the heaviest load and also is substantially smaller than the 'big brick' MBP adapter; works like a charm in my car. If you get a second charger for home use, might as well make it the MB adapter and add the inverter for mobile fun.

RoughlyDrafted has posted the first pictures of posters up at WWDC 2007-- the event of course doesn't start until Monday, but Apple is already starting to plaster the Moscone Center West with tasty morsels of what we might see there next week. As you can see, it looks like Leopard is not surprisingly going to take center stage-- the long banner in the pic above specifically references Time Machine (there's even a little logo just left of the star).
Unfortunately, there's no reference to any of the "secret features"-- MacOSXHints rounded up a good poll of what we might see there. Since I wasn't around to make predictions the other day, I'll drop one right now: like Gruber, I think Leopard will be beautifully resolution independent. Yeah, I know, not too far out on the limb, but I just got here, so I'm playing it safe.

The fine folks over at Macenstein spotted this special deal: a free license for the Mac version of DivX Pro, if you send in your email address today -- a $20 value. I can't see the end-of-offer indication on the site, but I'll take their word for it.
With the Pro version you get the free player (naturally), plus DivX Converter for batch encoding and the DivX Pro codec for export from QuickTime Pro-aware applications. Based on the theory that you can never be too rich, too thin or have too many video compression applications, it's worth checking out.
