- ForkLift 2-pane file manager with SFTP ships
Filed under: Software, Internet Tools
A while back when we mentioned a preview of ForkLift, a new 2-pane file manager for the Mac, the comments suggested that I may have somewhat under-appreciated what it offered. Well ForkLift has now shipped and appears to include quite a few nice features. Among these are a full-fledged (S)FTP client, tabs, spring loaded folders, Amazon S3 support, an Application Deleter (a la AppZapper), the ability to browse archives as if they were folders, and quite a bit more. For those moving over from using an orthodox file manager on the PC, or for anyone who finds the Finder rather limiting, ForkLift is worth a look. (Incidentally, if you're interested in the new Mac indie development company behind ForkLift, BinaryNights, MacApper had an interesting interview a while back.)
ForkLift is $30 and a demo is available.

Filed under: Peripherals, Software, Odds and ends
We've previously mentioned several of Nova Media's products for integrating Mac and mobile phones. Now they're back with FoneLink, an integrated phone management utility that allows you to connect to and manage your mobile phone data from your Mac, including media files and ringtones. You can also make complete backups of your phone onto your Mac. The list of supported phones includes models from Motorola, Nokia, and Sony Ericsson. Robust mobile phone management tools on the Mac are thin on the ground, so this is good to see. (Though If you have a CDMA phone you may find BitPim useful.)
FoneLink is €25.17 (~$34) and a demo is available.

Filed under: Retail, Cult of Mac, Apple
As we all well know, Apple tends to be a rather secretive company and this extends to their retail operation procedures, etc. Nonetheless, many of us have wondered what it takes to become an Apple Genius, those black-shirted folks manning the Apple Store's most distinctive feature. Well, Apple employees are not supposed to talk, but one former Genius and one current Genius speaking anonymously have let MacLife pull the curtain back a bit for a look at what it takes to be a Apple Genius.
To get your foot in the door you have to pass a test on diagnosing Mac problems, then if selected you're sent to Cupertino for two weeks of training en route to gaining three Apple certifications. Then comes some "real-world" training at Apple Retail headquarters, before finally ending with some on-the-job training at an actual retail Store locations. If you've ever been curious about how Apple makes their Genius quota, MacLife's look is worth a read.
