There are no iPhone fanboys here.
We asked you, our readers, if you'd be willing to line up on the 28th to purchase an iPhone on the 29th. In our highly unscientific poll, a full 45% of you said, "No, I have better things to do." Just over 2,100 of respondents (or 28%) said they'll "absolutely" line up, while 18% are considering it and only 9% are willing to commit if the opportunity presents itself.

Right now, iTunes Plus allows you to upgrade tracks and music videos. So what about TV shows or movies? If Apple started offering High Definition versions, would you upgrade your existing library? After all, it's got to look good on your new Apple TV, right? Or do you think you're already paying a premium price for iTunes content? And you're not even getting the director's commentaries! Apple is airing yet another fantastic iPhone ad. It hasn't made it to the iPhone TV ad website yet, but an enterprising person has posted it to YouTube. This ad focuses on the web browsing functionality of the iPhone. This is a full version of Safari, and it takes you to the real internet, not a slimmed down mobilized version.

Parallels' killer feature is Coherence, a display mode that lets Windows apps and Mac apps seem to co-mingle with one another. VMWare, the market leader in virtualization, had a solid Mac offer (in beta) called Fusion but it lacked a similar feature. It looks like VMWare has figured out that people are crazy about Coherence, and so Unity is coming to a Fusion install near you.
As you can see in this video, Unity is pretty cool. It seems to have a little more polish than Parallels' implementation (the drop shadows are a nice touch) but I'll reserve judgement until I can use it myself.
The desktop virtualization market really is heating up!

Over at the Denver Channel, I found this Business Week write up about the true cost of Apple TV. It offers, they write, no more than a 20% markup in price--far out of line with Apple's other, more profitable products. Is it that Apple is, as I hope, selling the razor (Apple TV) before announcing the blades (either iTunes HD content or video rentals)? Over at iPhone Matters, Tanner Godarzi asks whether you'll be able to buy an iPhone without a new contract, speculating that stores with extra inventory may allow just that. I think that's pretty unlikely. The commercials clearly state "Use requires a minimum new 2-year activation plan". Godarzj also suggests that you might be able to add an iPhone to an existing AT&T contract, which sounds at least a bit more realistic to me.
Contract details, specifically the complete lack of them, continue to keep many possible customers away from making their purchasing decisions. How many people do you know who have said "I might get an iPhone--if it turns out I can afford it"? With rumors of $70 per month data plans, it could be a very expensive choice.

Bryan Boyko spent 30 days using Intel Macs running OS X, which he found to be well designed but not worth the price in the end.
Unfortunately, he started by testing a Mac Mini with only 512M RAM rather than a better equipped unit and ran into a lot of swapping slow-downs. The inability of the OS X hardware to run all his Windows peripherals and the minimal support for X11 also disappointed. Further, he was unhappy with the lack of quality freeware (italics are his). New Mac users, he writes will probably have to shell out for Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop--NeoOffice and OpenOffice didn't offer the full functionality he needed.
It's always easy to second-guess unhappy switcher reviews though in this case Boyko did a pretty thorough job, which he documents in his 11-page review.

It's that time of season again, oh dear TUAW readers: the time just before a major Apple event when we TUAW bloggers look deep into our crystal balls to make both wild and sensible predictions as to what WWDC 07 might bring us next week. This time around we have a fairly rich selection of rumored products (like iMac updates) and updates we all thought we would see at Macworld 07 (iLife 07 anyone?).
