- Apple moving iron: #10 server brand
Filed under: Apple Professional, XServe, Apple
DigiTimes is reporting numbers from IDC which show that Apple posted impressive 73% on-quarter growth in server shipments in the first quarter of 2007, moving into 10th place among server brands. Apple shipped 8700 units overall, with the gains attributed to the fifth generation Xserve "adopting Intel Dual Core Xeon processors (Woodcrest)." Since the Xserve are now able to run Linux on a par with other machines, it would be interesting to know how many of these machines are running Linux instead of OS X Server (the report did not say). In any case, Apple is presumably happy either way.

Filed under: Productivity, Airport, Beta Beat
A while back we mentioned MarcoPolo, a location manager for the Mac that can change certain system settings based on the wireless network you're connected to. Home Zone takes this idea to the next level with support not only for Airport networks, but also Bluetooth proximity scanning. You can set up a variety of actions (e.g. changing the default printer, starting/stopping the screen saver, starting iSync, etc.) that are triggered either by changing your Airport network or by bringing Bluetooth phone close to your Mac.
Home Zone is presently in beta and a free download from Jonas Witt.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Pangea Software is best known for their games, but now they've brought out a new productivity utility called TabMeister. Basically it allows you to add pull out tabs to the edge of your screen which "act like pop-up folders containing icons of all of the things you want to have access to." In addition, as you mouse over the contents of a the tab, the icons and names are zoomed on your desktop.
In some ways TabMeister looks a lot like the recently retired Drop Drawers with a bit of added eye candy. So anybody who previously used Drop Drawers but doesn't want to follow the upgrade path to DragThing should have a look at TabMeister.
TabMeister is $14.95 and a demo is available.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

US: Jarhand by Immaculate Machine
Each week, we find a track from an artist or a band who's on the cusp of success and bring it to you, for free, as our Single of the Week. This week, we turn to Canada's Immaculate Machine. This group has been diligently performing at home since it formed about five years ago. Opening for bands such as the Arcade Fire and the Constantines gave Immaculate Machine more exposure, increasing their fan base and giving them the confidence that shows on "Jarhand." This is an effervescent track with a Motown rhythm that draws a little on the harmonies of roots-punk heroes X and fellow countrymen the New Pornographers (with whom they share a member). "Jarhand" also features some backing vocal assistance from Franz Ferdinand's Alex Kapranos and English trio the Cribs.US: Running Back by Michoacan

It is being reported today that AT&T is tuning its EDGE network ahead of the iPhone release on June 29. Supposedly the project is called "Operation Fine Edge" and involves adding internet capacity to certain cell towers to ensure that minimum data speeds will be at least 80kbs (double the previous minimum).
Along with 3rd party development, the use of the 2.5G EDGE technology rather than true 3G HSDPA has been a concern from the beginning. Now that the door has seemingly been opened to the former, if AT&T is in fact able to beef up its EDGE network, it may go a long way toward alleviating this last remaining obvious problem with the iPhone.

Keeping with the tradition of our unofficial nature, TUAW will be party-crashing next week's Worldwide Developer's Conference. While we won't be brushing up on our kernel debugging, we may very well be outside protesting the lack of a common UI. Mostly we'll be around to give readers at home a feel for the massive codejam that is WWDC, conduct a few interviews, and host a little get-together on Monday night.
Oh, and did I mention the TUAW t-shirts we'll be randomly giving away all week?
If you're interested in showing off your Cool New App let us know!Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Mac users have a dizzying array of web broswers to choose from, which makes finding a favorite a tricky thing. My browser of choice has been Camino for a long, long time. It just looks like a Mac app, and it uses the Gecko rendering engine so I get all the goodness of FireFox (sans extentions which I don't use) and none of the ugly controls.
Camino 1.5 has just been released, and it is a very nice update indeed. New in this release is:
- Spell checking using OS X's dictionary
- Session restore - in case the broswer crashes, it stores all your open pages in a session which it offers to restore on launch (this is very handy)
- Keychain compatibilty - use the same Keychain entries for both Safari and Camino
Full screen mode - because it is the new hotness in apps- Gecko rendering engine 1.8.1
Thanks, jimmy.
Update: I misread the 'Window Zoom' feature. The new feature resizes the Camino window to fit the content of the page it is displaying instead of taking up the whole screen (this is when you hit the green button on the menubar). My mistake.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Software, Internet Tools, TUAW Interview
Hot on the heels of releasing NetNewsWire 3 Brent Simmons, developer and creator of said program, sat down with me in the virtual HQ of TUAW (a.k.a. the Internet) and answered my questions five. Read on to hear what Brent has to say about NNW's new UI, the feature he would have liked to have included, and what apps are most often in his Dock.Continue reading 5 questions with Brent Simmons, creator of NetNewsWire

The NetNewsWire 3.0 beta is now over. That's right, RSS junkies, NNW 3.0 is now publicly available. I've been using NetNewsWire 3.0 since Macworld 2007, and it has really come together in the last few months. There are lots of new features, including:
- Growl support
- Spotlight integration
- Twitterific support
- A New UI
- Performance enhancement (this sucker screams on Intel Macs)
- Improved Tabbed browsing
- Microformat support
NetNewsWire 3.0 is available now and costs $29.95. Upgrading is free, if you have the NewsGator Online Premium Package. NetNewsWire Lite, the free version of NNW, is still a work in progress.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:
