- TUAW Poll: Will you line up for an iPhone?
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, iPhone
Brace yourselves, people. It's time to begin obsessively staring at our calendars. The iPhone will be here in just a few weeks. But will you get one? We know that no pre-orders are being accepted. There are hints of a shortage, despite Apple's claims to the contrary. Here at TUAW headquarters, we're guessing the weekend of the 29th will see huge sales. We might get to the mall extra early...or even camp out on the 28th.
How about you? Will you line up for an iPhone? Vote in our poll and come back tomorrow for the results. And when you do finally get your new toy, don't forget to set your web homepage to TUAW.

As surmised among the rumorscenti, this morning's Apple Store outage was the preshow for a MacBook Pro speed bump. The new units ship with either 2.2 GHz or 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo (Santa Rosa) processors, upgraded NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT video cards (with either 128 MB or 256 MB of VRAM), new mercury-free LED displays, and a minimum of 2 GB of RAM (yay!) with support for 4 GB (YAY!). The slot-loading optical drive has also been updated to 8x, in line with the MacBook configs. Apple also notes that the 17-inch model "offers a new optional 1920-by-1200 high-resolution display, providing over 30 percent more screen real estate than the standard 1680-by-1050 display." Does it come with a set of magnifying glasses too? The 802.11n version of the Airport Extreme card rounds out the feature package. For a handy spec list, check the end of the Apple press release.
Ladies and gentlemen, start your credit cards... prices start at $1999 for the 15" 2.2 GHz config and go to $2799 for the 17" kit.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: iPod Family, iTS, iTunes
Who says there's no such thing as a free lunch? (Robert Heinlein says it, but that's not the point.) Check out this funky little button on the iTunes front page this morning. Granted, while the Apple Store is down it does nothing in particular, but soon, my precious, it will offer college students a free iPod Nano with every Mac purchase. Yummy.

The NetNewsWire 3.0 beta is now over. That's right, RSS junkies, NNW 3.0 is now publicly available. I've been using NetNewsWire 3.0 since Macworld 2007, and it has really come together in the last few months. There are lots of new features, including:
- Growl support
- Spotlight integration
- Twitterific support
- A New UI
- Performance enhancement (this sucker screams on Intel Macs)
- Tabbed browsing
- Microformat support
NetNewsWire 3.0 is available now and costs $29.95. Upgrading is free, if you have the NewsGator Online Premium Package. NetNewsWire Lite, the free version of NNW, is still a work in progress.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

http://www.tuaw.com/2007/06/05/apple-store-is-down/#comments - Happy 30th Birthday, Apple II
The first Apple Computer I ever used wasn't a Mac, rather it was the grandfather of the Macintosh: the Apple II (it was actually an Apple IIe, but you get the idea). This is the machine that started it all: Apple, the personal computer revolution, and the idea of putting Apple stickers in the box with the machine. The Apple II went on sale June 5th, 1977 and it changed the world forever.
I spent many an hour of my youth staring into that black screen with green text, bending it to my will. Please help me wish the Apple II a very happy birthday, in a manner befitting it:
10 PRINT "Happy Birthday, Apple II!"
20 GOTO 10
If you want to run that little program you should check out Chipmunk, a great little BASIC emulator for OS X.

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Rumors, iMac
As we approach "Steve Keynote Time," the rumors about what he may discuss begin to fly, as you all know. The latest describes a "brushed metal iMac," that resembles the bastard child of the current iMac and an Apple Cinema display.
Eh, I guess I can see this as a progression of the current design. That way, the Mac Pro, Macbook Pro and iMac would all have a metallic case. Plus, the current design has been around for some time now (in the tech world, at least). What do you all think? Could this mock up be the look of things to come?
