- Hello Kitty car-based iPod Charger
The role of Hello Kitty in electronics is a strange one. Just when you think there are things that couldn't possibly be branded by the cute little Sanrio icon, you're proved wrong. Hello Kitty can be branded on absolutely anything. Case in point. Observe this Kitty-styled iPod car charger. It offers in-car power for your iPod. It provides an FM transmitter so you can listen to your iTunes on your radio. It's stem is long enough to allow you to use it with a floor-level cigarette adapter and yet it's still pink enough to please any 8- and 10-year-old girls in your vicinity.
If the pink so takes you, you can also purchase Hello Kitty iPod speakers, Hello Kitty stereo clocks with iPod docking, Hello Kitty iPod cases, or an actual iPod engraved with the Hello Kitty logo.

Oh it's on now. Engadget posted some more juicy bits for those thirsty to hack their Apple TV to do everything from read RSS to solving the holy grail of complaints: support for using an external USB drive as the media drive, thereby circumventing the limit of the device's pathetic 40GB drive.
First up is a slick RSS plugin for the Apple TV (pictured) that allows you to download and read news and blogs via RSS. Created by twenty08, the installation sounds fairly simple, as is editing the actual RSS file to add whatever feeds you like. Plenty more is on the way for this plugin, however, including extracting images from feeds and playing embedded videos right in the RSS item itself. Since the Apple TV and the very hackable technology that runs it are still shiny and new to everyone, twenty08 reminds us that hacks like this merely need a little time to develop and mature.
Another more bizarre hack is support for Apple TV game emulation, with YouTube user WildRoosterFilms posting a video of Super Mario Brothers running on the device with a hack that enables an N64 controller to drive the game. Check out the AwkwardTV wiki for more details on how to get this up and running.
Last but in no way least is Apple TV Hacks' announcement of a $1000 bounty to whoever can enable support for using an external USB drive for the Apple TV's media storage. While plenty of Apple TV users are happy to stream some of their content that the device's puny drive can't hold, this bounty clearly shows an interest from plenty of other users who are excited to have more on-device space for storing everything locally on the Apple TV itself. There are a number of criteria that must be met before the cash is handed over, however, so check out the rules if you think you have a shot at answering the prayers of claustrophobic Apple TV owners.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Those fabulous Instructables folk have come up with another Mac winner. Check out this Macpack Backpack, constructed from a dead Mac SE, circa 1988 by I'mAnAlchemist. The project required a bit of deconstruction, using a variety of wrenches and screwdrivers, some serious innards-ripping-outification, and the borrowing of some straps from a backpack. As always, there's a step-by-step guide just in case you find a dead SE Mac and want to learn how to skin & gut your catch.
What says fashion more than a rigid high tech SE backpack? We certainly can't think of anything. Can you? Could Tim Gunn?

The folks at MacMerc have compiled a list of six free, must-have utilities for the Apple TV. We know how much everyone loves hacking their Apple TVs, and now you can join in fun.
- Video Flash Downloader will allow you to pull video directly from YouTube (or other flash-based sites).
- iSquint encodes video for the iPod, which the Apple TV can also use.
- TiVo Decode Manager will change the files on a Series 2 TiVo into Apple TV-friendly MPEG format. It also preserves metadata.
- Copernicus is a screen capture application that, we guess, will let you watch yourself work on tv. Because you're that darn good.
- HandBrake rips DVDs into MPEG 4 format (among others).
- Lostify is a meta tag editor, which you can use with the files you capture with your TiVo or EyeTV.

Filed under: Retro Mac, Blast From the Past
If your business is out of control, suggests this ad, perhaps a Macintosh could solve all your problems, with its shiny, shiny spreadsheets, word processing, and other business features that allow you to concentrate on your business rather than learning how to become a computer expert. More to the point, the Macintosh proves it can defeat alligators and lower the incidence of in-office sewage... or something like that. You do have to give the ad-makers credit for their clever twist on the standard lemonade-from-lemons solution.
I am assured by those having worked with the Macs of that time, and with managers of that vintage, that many of those early, expensive macs ended up rarely used on managers' desks as a kind of status symbol rather than as an actual productivity tool. And that those alligators might have been cheered on just a bit by the employees.

Last week, we pointed out Apple's intention to extend its presence in Best Buy (Best Buy is a big box electronics store here in the US) to 200 locations in 2007. We noted some of the less-than-Mac-like experiences we've had at the hands of Best Buy employees, and some of you shared similar experiences. Today, there's good news.
MacNN is reporting that Apple may establish "boutiques" in these locations, sort of stores within the store. Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster said, "We believe Apple's store within a store at Best Buy will be much different compared to the current pilot store roll-out, which was a table with Apple products on it..." on Monday. Sounds good, and we're eager to see the setup.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Mods, MacBook, Rig of the Week
So Rig of the Week is a day late this time. Oh, well.
A few weeks ago we pointed out a modded MacBook that had received a key transplant (among other things). This week, TUAW reader Alexandra Roberts took the idea a step further with this pair of MacBooks. Looking at these 'Books, we can imagine what an Apple-branded piano would look like.

Filed under: iPod Family, Retail, Apple
Apple today announced the sale of 100 million iPods. This surely brings a smile to Dr. Evil, Apple enthusiasts, and shareholders alike as the first iPod was sold a mere five and a half years ago in November 2001. Quoth Steve Jobs from Apple's press release:
"At this historic milestone, we want to thank music lovers everywhere for making iPod such an incredible success. iPod has helped millions of people around the world rekindle their passion for music, and we're thrilled to be a part of that."
Of course, it's still a little creepy that Apple refers to the device as 'iPod' instead of 'the iPod,' as if it's some sort of scroll wheel-toting 2nd cousin they're introducing us to, but we won't hold it against Apple until they start posting iWeb photo montages of iPod having a good time at various tourist destinations throughout the world.
There isn't much more to say about the sales milestone for now, but check out the press release if you're into quotes about Apple's success from the likes of Mary J. Blige, John Mayer, and Lance Armstrong.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

We first reported on Apple's intention to put an store in Birmingham's Summit Mall a year ago. The fact is, it has been six years since Apple acquired "store #5" in that mall. This Saturday, April 14, the wait will finally end as this store has its grand opening. This will be Alabama's very first Apple Store.
If you're going to attend this opening in Alabama, please send us links to your photos and reports! Good luck and have fun.
Thanks, Joseph!Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
