- Widget Watch: Delivery Status 3 now does Growl notifications
Filed under: Software, Internet Tools, Widget Watch
Mike Pointek has updated his rockin' Delivery Status widget with Growl notifications, making it pretty much the most feature-packed, well-designed and useful shipping widgets that has ever graced this blogger's Dashboard. In addition to now being able to notify you of changes in your package's status, Delivery Status can also run multiple instances to keep track of more than one delivery, track shipments from ten different companies and services (sixteen if you count each one of Amazon's international sites separately), refresh as often as you like and easily take you to the package's shipment details at the shipping service's site.
Delivery Status is provided as donationware from Mike Pointek's site.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

First it was Best Buy, now AppleInsider is reporting that US retailer Target will become the next third party chain to sell the Apple TV. You can expect to see units in stores by the end of the month (you can currently get one online at Target's website), and a few locations will even feature full-blown demo setups.
It has been reported that Apple TV sales have been a bit slow at Best Buy, so who knows what will happen at Target. Let us know if you see any, especially a demo model.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Desktops, Software, Cult of Mac
This week's TUAW Desktop hails from Flickr user brianpunx and makes use of a number of Mac OS X software and icons which brianpunx was kind enough to list (hint: that makes my job easier when picking a TUAW Desktop of the Week, though it doesn't influence my decision). First, it's running a ShapeShifter theme by the name of Amora Pearl by well-known Mac OS X icon and desktop artist David Lanham. Now I couldn't track down the wallpaper, but the album art/iTunes controller in the bottom left is CoverSutra (which we've mentioned before), and the date/time display at bottom center is the work of Panic's excellent Stattoo. You have to view the larger version of brianpunx's desktop, however, to really take in the view and clever placement of icons in relation to the wallpaper.
If you'd like to see your unique, functional or otherwise interesting desktop featured in our TUAW Desktops of the Week series, check out past featured desktops as well as the original post for the rules and to get an idea of what we're looking for. Then, upload your desktop screenshot to our TUAW Desktops Flickr group. We'll feature one or more desktops each weekend, giving credit to the desktop owner, wallpaper creator and any apps featured in the screenshot (if available). Keep those desktops rolling in!Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Hardware, Rig of the Week
TUAW reader el frijole should have no trouble "crunching numbers" with this bad boy. A plethora of Xserves get busy...well, doing something important and demanding. Note the three empty slots that once housed dead drives. Poor little guys.

ArtRage 2 is a cool, inexpensive "natural media" painting program from Ambient Design. It's cross-platform, and it shows to some degree in its single window interface. The tool palettes, for example, aren't free floating windows, but rather part of the main window as you see above. Nonetheless, it has an incredible number of features for the price, offering different canvas types, painting tools, etc. For instance, you can move the "paint" around with a palette knife, and the texture of canvas affects how the pigment is laid down. All in all, it looks like a great value (and Macworld agrees) for those of us who don't need the power of something like Corel Painter X.
ArtRage 2 comes in two versions: a freeware version with fewer features, and the full version for only $20. It is available for download for both Mac and PC.

A while back we posted on the cool open source Guitar Hero clone, Frets on Fire. Well I'm a pretty big Xbox 360 fan, and one of my favorite games on the 360 is the recently released Guitar Hero II, which ships with a USB X-plorer guitar-shaped controller. So of course the first thing I did when I got it was plug it into my Mac to see if it would work with the Pref360 controller driver, but alas it did not. Disappointed, I contacted the author of that driver, Colin Munro, to see if he could help me get it working. And sure enough, with a little bit of editing of the driver plist, we got it going (that is to say, I followed his directions exactly and it worked).
I asked Colin if he would go ahead and add native support for the X-plorer for the next release of Pref360, and he has now done exactly that in the just released version 0.05. Furthermore, it works great with Frets on Fire (look here for the Mac version); just install Pref360 and then go into the Frets on Fire button setup and you should be able to assign the fret and strum buttons (the whammy bar is not yet supported in Frets on Fire). Now you have access access to all the fan created songs for Frets on Fire on your Mac.
Coincidentally, MacRecon recently reported that you could use the X-plorer with USB Overdrive ($20). However, Pref360 is donationware, and it works with Frets on Fire. So unless you have some other need for USB Overdrive I'd suggest going with Pref360, which is a free download from Tattiebogle.
Thanks gortman (mac recon)!

Filed under: OS, Software, Open Source
Dust off those old iBooks and Powerbooks and give them new life with Linux. Earlier this week, Ubuntu released version 7.04 of their desktop and server distribution, called "Feisty Fawn." While version 6 was the last officially supported version of Ubuntu for PPC, there is a community-supported PPC version of Feisty Fawn that you can download here. Ubuntu is a free (as in speech and beer) download.
Also, Yellow Dog Linux version 5.0.1 for PPC was made available in the Terra Soft store earlier this month, and the download mirrors will be availabe in a few weeks. For now, you can purchase YDL from Terra Soft in one of two bundles, priced at $99.95 and $49.95 respectively.
