- Apple TV Commercial spotted in the wild
Filed under: iPod Family, Apple, Apple TV
A big thank you to everyone who has written in, tipping us off about this new Apple TV commercial that just aired today on US television. "It's on your computer. It's on your iPod. Now, it's on your TV."
I'm not positive which movie they're using--is it "School of Rock"? SoR is on my to-watch list but I've never gotten around to seeing it yet.
As for the commercial itself, it's very on-message. It speaks directly to its core constituency. AppleTV is for the iTunes/iPod audience. It expands the way they use the media they already own. And hopefully it will serve the better-quality media we're expecting an announcement for at NAB 2007.

Filed under: Hacks, Developer, Apple TV
Earlier we posted about a couple of cool drop-in plugins for the Apple TV. However, somebody we know around here was busy over the weekend and has hacked up a more user extensible plugin for the Apple TV that lets you run a perl script from the Apple TV interface. As Erica notes, many folks know how to write perl, but not Cocoa. So with this plugin you can easily write perl scripts to "scrape web pages, subscribe to RSS feeds," etc. Erica's examples include getting weather information, or date and time, etc., but obviously much more is possible. While it may not be quite as slick looking as those other plugins, it promises to be much more powerful, and of an entirely different order of geekiness. Check it out over at MacDevCenter. While you're there also have a look at Erica's State of the Hacks, that runs down what's now possible if you're willing to crack open your new toy,Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Apple Corporate, Cult of Mac, Apple
When Apple's Think Different television campaign first aired in September of 1997, the company was in dire straights (or, as we call it, "The Sculley Years"). To make a long and well-known story short, Steve came back, the company launched the enormously popular "Think Different" campaign with Chiat/Day, and that, true believers, was how Apple got its groove back.
LowEndMac takes a very interesting look at the development of that campaign, from the initial concept to the first broadcast commercial in '97. Some interesting facts include that Chiat/Day was given just 17 days to complete the project, and that Steve himself courted some of the people whose images were used.
Well done, Apple and Chiat/Day. We still love those ads.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Tips and tricks, Odds and ends, Terminal Tips
Too often overlooked, nl provides a very useful shell command. As you can see here, when issued, it numbers the lines of a text file. But that's certainly not all that this little utility can do. My favorite feature allows you to count the occurrences of a regular expression. Use the -bp flag to tell nl to count all the lines that match that expression. For example:
% nl -bp"So.*e" sonnet.txt
Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date:
1 Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimm'd;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance or nature's changing course untrimm'd;
But thy eternal summer shall not fade
Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest;
Nor shall Death brag thou wander'st in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou growest:
2 So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
3 So long lives this and this gives life to thee.
