  • UK iTunes topped by home-made album

    23-year-old Kate Walsh recorded some music at a friend's house at a cost of a few hundred British pounds. Now that album is topping charts at the UK iTunes store. "Tim's House" currently holds the number three spot for top album sales and has received dozens of glowing reviews for its ten tracks, ranging from "[B]eautiful, calming, floaty, inspired and emotional" to "Stunning Album!". Helping to move the album into the public conciousness was the "Talk of the Town" track, which was recently featured as a UK iTunes Single of the Week.

    The 30-second samples I listened to certainly don't sound like they were recorded in somebody's basement.

  • iTunes: Free Tuesday

    Welcome to this week's edition of iTunes: Free Tuesday. This week brings US readers new free music and TV shows. Still no sign of any international TV and Movies offerings to fill up those international Apple TVs of yours, but here are some free music tracks for those of you in Canada, the UK, France, New Zealand and Australia.

    US Music

    US: A Strange Education by The Cinematics
    Born in a part of Scotland where most people's idea of good music involves an accordion and the sheep outnumber the people 20:1, The Cinematics have come a long way already. We think they have the potential to go a lot further, which is why we chose their song, "Strange Education," as our free Single of the Week.

    US: Montala by Miguelito
    Meet the new prince of reggaetón - he's eight years old. Puerto Rico's Miguelito was discovered by reggaetón's reigning king, Daddy Yankee, while on a movie set. Yankee was taken by Miguelito's style and confidence. A short time later, Miguelito had released his debut, Más Grande Que Tú. Now, the second-grader can be heard booming from all the biggest soundsystems thanks to his newest hit, and our free Single of the Week, "Móntala."

    US: One for 'Grew (For Mulgrew Miller) by Robert Glasper
    "One for 'Grew" (a track named for Robert Glasper's mentor, Mulgrew Miller) is one of the many tunes on the jazz pianist's second album, In My Element, that shows why many are putting him in league with Keith Jarrett or Brad Mehldau. As a bandleader he's subtle and yet carries a strong rhythmic bent that stems from his exposure to hip-hop. This particular tune is a more straightforward ballad that doesn't blow you away with dexterity, but conjures up mood and nuance brilliantly. This is our free Discovery Download.

  • HOWTO: Another way to find EMI songs on your computer

    You might have read Dave's writeup of Mac OS X Hint's terminal tip for locating EMI songs using mdifind. I tried it out myself but I just couldn't get it to work. So I thought I'd give you a far easier way to accomplish the same thing.

    In Finder, select File -> Find (Command-F). Select "Other..." from the search attribute pop-up and when the "Select a search attribute" dialog opens, choose Copyright ("Copyright information about this item") from the list. Search for Copyright Contains EMI and let Spotlight do all the work for you.

  • Quickly find your EMI music

    Last week we asked if you will upgrade the EMI tracks you currently own to the new DRM-free versions when they become available in iTunes next month. Just over 2,500 of you said you would, so now the question becomes: How do I easily find my EMI music?

    MacOSXHints has the answer. Just launch Terminal and enter the following:

    "mdfind -onlyin ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music
    "kMDItemCopyright == '*Emi*' kMDItemCodecs == '*protected*' "

    Note that this trick assumes your music lives in the default location. You can output the result to a handy text file by appending > ~/Desktop/myEMI.txt to the end of the command above. Cool!

  • Quicksilver meets Twitter and Growl

    Here is a cool Quicksilver script that lets you post messages to Twitter. Once you've downloaded the script and placed it into your Quicksilver/Actions folder, you can simply call up Quicksilver, invoke text mode (by typing a "."), tab to the action pane, type "tweet" and you're off. Plus, Growl will let you know when you've successfully "tweeted."

    Not bad for a script that was written from start to finish in the time it takes to play Prince's Purple Rain all the way through (that was the limit the author set for himself).

    I recently jumped onto the Twitter bandwagon, and while I do admit that it's fun, it isn't especially useful. Do I really need to know that Johnny is looking for AAA batteries? No.
