  • Gracenotes and iTunes in lyrics talks

A deal between Apple iTunes and Gracenotes may be in the works according to this recent Reuters report posted by PC Magazine. Gracenotes has gained the rights to legally distribute lyrics from BMG, Universal Music, Sony/ATV and other content providers. A deal between iTunes and Gracenote is a natural evolution of this acquisition, similar to the existing agreement that allows Gracenote to supply iTunes with track information. Gracenotes CEO Craig Palmer expects lyrics to provide up to $100 million in annual revenues by a decade from now. An iTunes deal would create a portion of those revenues.

TUAW recently showed readers how to add lyrics to iPods using iTunes' current features.

  • Freeverse releases Periscope

A slew of new apps have been released as of late (no doubt due to the Apple Design Awards deadline) and Freeverse didn't want to be left out of the party. Periscope is a webcam utility that adds a bunch of cool features to your Mac's webcam (builtin or otherwise). You can set it to take a pic based on motion, noise, a timer, Applescript, or by pressing the Apple Remote. Once you have a pic, or a series of pics, you can upload them to Flickr, an FTP site, or export them (you can even create a time lapse movie).

Periscope is available now for $29.95.

  • iTunes: Free Tuesday

Welcome to this week's edition of iTunes: Free Tuesday. Every week we search iTunes stores from around the world to find you the newest free items. This week, US readers please take note. The "Life is Beautiful" single of the week shows up twice in the store, one as a free pop version, the other labeled alternative. At the time of writing, only the Alternative version allows purchase and downloads. This is almost surely a clerical error. I do not believe there are two tracks on offer.

    US Music

US: Life Is Beautiful by Vega4
Each week, we find a track from an artist or a band who's on the cusp of success and bring it to you, for free, as our Single of the Week. Vega4 offers up a bit of positive affirmation with the track "Life is Beautiful." The song ebbs and flows, swaying between the quiet expository beginnings of whispered insecurities which gradually build to a grander display of resolve against adversity. By the end of the song, the ragged waves of guitar bliss bring on a chorus that sounds like a group of hopeful indie kids marching down Main Street. If you like the grandiose, sweeping nature of the best of Coldplay or Snow Patrol, we think you'll enjoy this. Get the track, take a deep breath, and listen.

US: Ella (Amor a Primera Vista) by Monty
Each week, we find a track from an artist or a band who's on the cusp of success and bring it to you, for free, as our Canción de la Semana. Argentinean singer Monty (real name Facundo Monty, son of singer Yaco Monty) has great range as a vocalist, and this allows him to dabble in pop and cumbia. For his new album, Ella, Monty works mainly within the framework of soul and R&B, allowing a strong team of producers and arrangers to push him into the upper regions of slick, funky soul. The song "Ella (Amor a Primera Vista)" is our free Canción de la Semana.

US: I Got More by Cole Deggs & The Lonesome
Cole Deggs & the Lonesome is comprised of five members, two pairs of which are brothers. It's no surprise the band has a tightly knit feeling in its gritty, rock-tinged country. Cole Deggs is the primary songwriter and he's also written tunes for Tracy Byrd and Kenny Chesney. With our free Discovery Download "I Got More," Deggs provides a low-flying groove of a tune, characterized by his slightly rough vocals and some great electric piano. Get this track today.

US Video and International Music selections after the jump...

  • Transmisison 0.71 Fixes Announce Issue

One of the things I love about OS X is the fact that for pretty much any conceivable task, there are multiple applications to choose from with which to do it. Unfortunately, this hasn't really been the case when it comes to BitTorrent clients. Yes, there may have been multiple native clients out there, but only two of them were really any good- BitRocket and Transmission- and for the longest time, Transmission was banned on many private torrent trackers. This left only BitRocket, a client lacking some key features such as the ability to view and set upload/download ratios. Until Today.

Transmission 0.71 fixes the much hated multiple-announce bug which caused it's banning by many trackers. The new version also includes some other small bug fixes and interface updates. Transmission is Open Source and available as a free download.

    Goodbye BitRocket!

  • Fred Andersen pays fine, says he didn't do it

We've already mentioned that Fred Andersen has agree to pay $3.5 million in fines to SEC in regards to the Apple backdating scandal. However, he is not going quietly into that good night. Mr. Andersen has released a statement (requires a WSJ subscription) which emphasizes that he admits no wrong doing. He goes on to claim that he warned Steve Jobs that if this compensation business wasn't handled correctly there could be some fallout. Jobs assured Fred that it was all on the up and up.

I don't think this story will be going away any time soon.

  • LEGO Star Wars goes Universal

A long time ago, in a squarish galaxy far, far away... Aspyr media, in an effort to save Mac users of the planet Earth from certain doom and boredom, released a Universal patch for LEGO Star Wars.

That's right: it's been a while since we've had to write about an app (finally) going Universal (Adobe CS3 notwithstanding), and even longer since I've had the opportunity to make a Star Wars pun, so there it is. All joking aside though, Aspyr apparently released this patch earlier in the month, but I just caught it in today's newsletter. You can snag the 4.71MB update from Macgamefiles.com.

  • Quickly edit photos with Picturesque

Acqualia has released a new utility for quick-and-dirty image editing called Picturesque. It allows you to add those snazzy reflections that are all the rage these days, as well as crop, curve, glow effects and borders. It could be quite handy for when you want to quickly edit an image for the web, and feel like launching Photoshop would be overkill.

Picturesque is universal, requires Mac OS 10.4 or later and costs $19.50 US. Alternatively, check out the free ImageWell for a similar type of no-fuss image editing.

    Thanks, Zac!

Steve Jobs and Jonathan Ive have been identified as candidates for the next Time 100 Poll, which is a list of the nation's most influential business people. Both Steve and Jonathan have appeared in Time before (Steve made the cover five times), and Steve has made previous Time 100 lists.

Magazine covers, national recognition, a billion-dollar company...just another day at the office.

  • Firefox Mac team looking for feedback

For anyone who has ever wished that Firefox did this or that on Mac OS X - get ready to voice your requests and complaints. Jeff Smykil at Ars Technica is reporting that Colin Barrett of the Firefox team has left the door wide open for Mac users to submit requests for the browser, including a short list of things they already know are at the top of many users' lists (some of which are already planned). For example: Native Form Widgets (i.e. - web form buttons that look and feel more like Mac OS X a lá Safari / Camino / OmniWeb) are on the drawing board for Firefox 3, and a Unified toolbar is apparently "not completely hopeless." Performance is of course on the list (is it ever not?), but a big one that this blogger feels is fundamental to any Mac OS X app that deals with passwords also made the list: Keychain integration (Colin - does that count for my request submission?). We of course have 1Passwd, a password and identity manager that (among other things) integrates Firefox with the Mac OS X Keychain, but 1Passwd's $30 price tag understandably sets it outside of most user's budgets (though until Firefox builds this feature in, I definitely recommend 1Passwd as a happy customer).

But don't stop there - Colin and the Firefox team want to hear your thoughts on these features, as well as all the others missing from the browser that you simply can't live without. In fact, they want all the email they can get their hands on, so head on over to Colin's blog to get the email address with which you can help make Firefox a better browser for the Mac.
