- CSSEdit 2.5 brings tabs, X-ray Inspector and more
Filed under: Software, Productivity, Internet Tools
MacRabbit has released CSSEdit 2.5, a significant update to their fantastic CSS editing and manipulating application. As if CSSEdit 2.0 didn't bring enough cool features, v2.5 is almost like sneaking a peek at your v3.0 birthday presents that are stashed away in your parent's closet the day before your party. There is a list of what's new on the MacRabbit's blog.
Quite the update, but a free one for registered owners of v2.x. Users of 1.x can upgrade for $14.95 instead of CSSEdit's regular price of $29.95, and of course a demo is available from MacRabbit.

Over at the Seeking Alpha investment blog, they take this crazy Wall Street business pretty seriously, and blogger/financial adviser Scott Rothbort of LakeView Asset Management is serious about his financial plan for his kids' Bar & Bat Mitzvahs. In case you're not familiar, the Jewish coming of age celebration (traditionally at age 13 for boys/12 for girls, although nowadays many families fete both at 13) involves a ceremonial call to read from the Torah scroll, recognition as an adult member of the community, and gifts -- sometimes legal tender -- from family and friends.
Rothbort's policy for those cash gifts is prudent: his kids use a chunk to buy a new computer (in the case of his son's upcoming Bar Mitzvah, the family's first Mac) and the rest gets invested in a five-stock equity portfolio. Topping the list of stocks is our dear friend AAPL (blog | quote), and Rothbort suggests an interesting sales strategy: "[Microsoft's] Vista operating system is such a disaster that it turns out to be the best marketing tool for the Apple Mac." Yikes. Other stocks on his list include Google, McDonalds, Goldman Sachs and Sears Holdings. Mazel tov, young Mr. Rothbort, and welcome to the Mac tribe.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

This is a pretty nifty video competition from Apple and the band "Modest Mouse". The later wants a video for their new song "Missed the Boat," so they have placed online 12 videos of the band performing the song in front of a green screen with different angles and camera shots. They are inviting people to download these videos and edit them together into a music video (you can use your own footage as well). Once you're done with your masterpiece (all rights to which you forfeit), upload it back to Apple for judging. The contest ends May 22, 2007.
Obviously this is a publicity stunt designed to promote Final Cut Studio and Logic, but it's a pretty darn cool publicity stunt. The contest page with the videos is live, so all of you wanna-be video directors get started!
Thanks, Chris!Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

http://www.tuaw.com/2007/04/23/apple-modest-mouse-video-contest/#comments - More on the CanSecWest exploit and Java
Filed under: Security
According to Matasano (home base for security researcher Dino Dai Zovi), the announced-but-unreleased web browser exploit that was used to win the CanSecWest MacBook Pro challenge involves browser support for Java. Turn off Java for Safari (or Firefox, or Camino) and your machine is immune.
Let's take a moment to note, before frantically shutting down all the garbage mashers on the detention level, that this is an unreleased exploit and there is no expectation of it going wild; it's in the care and feeding of the Zero Day Initiative now and notification to Apple, Sun (Java) and other affected parties will be handled professionally. The only real-world risk is if some clever soul manages to find the same unpublished vulnerability that Dai Zovi did and pairs it with a malicious payload. Personally, I use Java for a couple of work purposes, but I can presumably leave it on in one browser for those specific pages and do my general browsing with another, Java-disabled browser... that is, I would, if I was paranoid.
There are plenty of other ways to improve your Mac security, most listed via this post. Top three: turn on the firewall, run as a normal user, and turn off wireless (at least, turn off automatic connection to open networks). Apple's guide to Tiger security is also available as a PDF here.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ok, Generation Y, which brands do you trust the most (for the record, "Generation Y" is comprised of people between the ages of 21-27)? Outlaw Consulting asked that question to a group they referred to as their "...most forward trendsetter* panelists" across several US cities, and Apple topped the list.
According to Outlaw, brands that the subjects viewed as "straightforward" were viewed favorably. Also, plain packaging that seemed to "...avoid excess" scored well. That seems to be consistent with Apple's famed "out-of-box experience," wouldn't you say? Other brands in the top 15 include:
As a representative of Generation X myself, let me say, "Vitamin Water?!? It's just water. I'll never understand kids these days."
