- Mac 101: Dragging onto the Open dialog
Filed under: Tips and tricks, Mac 101
These days, people do a lot of uploading to the Internet. Whether you're adding videos to YouTube, or sending pictures to your favorite hosting site, OS X offers a simple feature that really helps you locate your files. Although you can't drag and drop onto Internet sites, you can drag and drop files onto the Open dialog. The dialog automatically updates to the proper folder, saving you some navigating time by quickly getting you to the right place. Then it's just a matter of click your upload button to get things going. Give it a try. You may be surprised by the effort it saves you, particularly if you do a lot of uploads to websites and weblogs.

Filed under: Software, Odds and ends
Just yesterday we posted on the bc command line calculator. Well on the other end of the UI spectrum is Soulver from Acqualia Software. Its authors claim that Soulver is a "plain English" calculator in that you can actually type in certain (in fact very limited) phrases and get answers, as you see above. In general, though, you'll use Soulver as a normal sort of calculator, but with a pleasing, easy to read interface. The expressions to be evaluated go on in the left column and the answers appear in the right, all in a nice clean list. As you can see, you can also open a couple of palettes with conversions and statistics on the entire column. Perhaps ironically, the actual number crunching power under the pretty GUI is the same bc mentioned above. Soulver is not meant to be a particularly sophisticated scientific calculator (though you can define variables, for instance), but rather a kind of "back of the envelope" replacement. It's an unusual concept, but once you get your mind around the idea of it not looking like a stand-alone calculator, I actually think the paradigm works well (and I put my own money where my mouth is on this one).
Soulver is $17.95 and a demo is available.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Portables, Cool tools, Freeware, Open Source
We've previously mentioned locations managers like Location X ($20) and NetworkLocation ($15). These are tools that can change a variety of settings depending on your location (e.g. SMTP server, default printer, etc.). This is very convenient for mobile users moving between work and home, etc. MarcoPolo is a new entry in this category and adds a number of cool features that we haven't seen before, including "fuzzy logic" rules for setting the location based on matching a variety of different criteria (wifi network, IP address, etc.) and USB and Bluetooth support (as criteria). The USB detection is a great feature if, for instance, you have one model of mouse and/or keyboard at work, but use a different set a home.
Best of all, MarcoPolo, unlike most of the other utilities, is open source and a free download.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Other Events, Apple Financial, TUAW Business
That's right, kiddies, Apple is having their quarterly results call today and TUAW will be liveblogging it. Oh, I am sure it'll be lots and lots of fun. Marvel as Apple refuses to comment on future products. Gaze upon record profits (I'm guessing). Thrill as all talk of the stock backdating scandal is avoided.
The webcast starts at 2PST (that's 5pm EST) and will be available here if you want to listen yourself.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Over at Theocacao, Scott Stevenson points out that Apple has added a Coding Headstarts page to their WWDC site. Basically it's a way for WWDC attendees to hit the ground running by watching a introductory video and seeing a lesson guide with some sample code before they get to San Francisco. To download these Headstarts you must be a WWDC 2007 E-Ticket holder, however Apple has made the short (1-3 minute) Introductory Videos available to anyone with a Apple Developer Connection account though iTunes (iTunes link).Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Apple Corporate, Apple Financial, Steve Jobs, Bad Apple, Apple
The New York Times is reporting that the Securities and Exchange Commission will not file charges against Apple, Inc. in regard to the backdating scandal. This is good news for Apple as a company, but Fred Andersen and Nancy Heinan aren't in the clear. Also not in the clear? Everyone's favorite iCEO, Steven P. Jobs. The Times says that the government usually goes after easy wins in cases like these and the evidence just isn't there for a quick resolution against Jobs.
