  • Adobe announces possible iTunes competitor

Adobe just announced its own media player at NAB. The player should operate along the same lines of iTunes and Windows Media Player allowing media library management and playback. Its Flash playback support sets it apart from the crowd--although as we've posted in the past, installing Perian adds Flash video playback support to QuickTime (and, with a bit of sneakiness, iTunes) if not full Flash interaction.

The Adobe press release says the new media player will allow content providers to "distribute and monetize media" hinting that, like iTunes, the player will offer storefront functionality.

  • iTunes: Free Tuesday

It's Tuesday and time for another edition of freebies. We've gathered these selections from the iTunes stores around the world. As usual, we have brought you free music, video, and audio books for US, Australian, Canadian, French, British and New Zealand iTunes customers. Make sure you follow the jump at the bottom of this post to see the entire list of free selections.

    International

Australia: Jenny Don't Be Hasty (Live At Parr Street) by Paolo Nutini
Each week, we find tracks from artists who are on the cusp of success and bring them to you, for free, as our Single of the Week. Scotland's Paolo Nutini writes songs about the intricacies of love and life and injects them with a bit of his own world-weary soul. How does a 19-year-old get so world-weary? No sob story here - just a young man who was tuned into the ways of Ray Charles and Van Morrison early on. "Jenny Don't Be Hasty" is the opening track on Nutini's debut and this live version is our free Single of the Week. Also, be sure to check out his debut album, These Streets, now available at a discount price.

New Zealand: Jenny Don't Be Hasty (Live At Parr Street) by Paolo Nutini

Canada: Catcher Song by Great Lake Swimmers
Each week, we find a track from a band or an artist who is on the cusp of success and bring it to you, for free, as our Single of the Week. Tony Dekker doesn't sound like the kind of songwriter who takes his inspiration from the comings and goings at the local club. His palette seems more coloured by natural surroundings - sea, sky, land. A little bit of flesh and bone now and then. "Catcher Song" is taken from Great Lake Swimmers' album, Ongiara, and it features Dekker's lost, mournful balladeer voice over a slowed-down, circular banjo melody. It's our free Single of the Week.

    France: War Hero by Antibalas

    UK: Elouise by Maps
Each week, we find tracks from artists who are on the cusp of success and bring them to you, for free, as our Single of the Week. Maps further the plan of (in)action started by a few shoe-gazing indie fans back in the early '90s. The group stands behind a wall of gauzy noise and lets tantalizingly sweet vocal melodies drift out over the noisy abyss - you can almost smell the bangs and striped shirts. However, Maps are no mere revisionists. The band brings more structure, more electronic percussion, and more layers of sound to the mix. Fans of Caribou or Ulrich Schnauss should take note.

More free items after the jump...

  • WWDC keynote scheduled for 3 hours

When I first read that headline, I thought of Ricky Ricardo: "Lucy, jo got some 'splaining to do!" With all the press that Leopard's delay has been receiving - both online and in print - Steve probably has a lot to say. He'll get his chance at WWDC '07, as the keynote he's scheduled to deliver on June 11th will be a three hour lecture (people have finished the Boston Marathon in less time). Bring some bottled water.

Actually, the thought of a lengthy keynote is pretty exciting. We'll probably get a full demonstration of Leopard - including those "top secret" features - as well as a good look at those 8 core Mac Pros. That would still leave time for iLife '07 (not really a WWDC topic, but he's got three hours to kill!) and perhaps some new goodies. We can't wait!

UPDATE: Apple put a call in to Engadget to tell them a typo erroneously listed the keynote as being 3 hours long. It will actually run from 10:00 AM - 11:30AM. So, crisis averted.

  • Wired finds bargain Nano Knockoff

    Filed under:

For about $100 (£50), Wired has found a Nano clone that appears to offer more features than the $250 (£129) real thing. Your money buys you a 4GB player with video support, an FM tuner, and a built-in voice recorder. Wired's Charlie Sorrel describes the sales presentation as cheeky (don't you love that?) and full of lawyer-bait, quoting from the sales page: "The groundbreaking new MP4 players have a similar look and feel to a Nano, but that's where the similarity ends".

  • BlogMate - blogging with TextMate on steroids

TextMate has a basic, built-in blogging bundle that provides some decent features. You can use a variety of syntaxes (HTML, Markdown, etc.) to pen your next digg-worthy post, and the bundle also has rudimentary support for retrieving posts from your blog to edit. It's not bad, but it isn't stellar either.

Todd Ditchendorf's BlogMate plugin, however, is stellar.

As a blogging interface for TextMate, the first thing you'll notice is that BlogMate isn't simply a bundle - it's a full-blown plugin, offering a palette with all sorts of control over your MetaWeblog-compatible blog (for now BlogMate has only been tested with WordPress, but in theory it should work with any of these blogging systems). As you can see, BlogMate can keep track of a configurable number of past posts, hook into your categories and even display previews with pictures of your posts. BlogMate can also handle multiple blogs for those who can't stop at just one (I'm looking at you, Scott McNulty).

Setting up BlogMate is a breeze, though I should probably mention at this point that it is a beta product, so I echo Todd's sentiment of backing up your blog's database just in case. Creating a new post is as easy as opening a new TextMate document and typing away, but there's a major difference from the Blogging bundle here: you don't need to insert a post title; you do that when you actually finish the post and click BlogMate's 'Send Post' button.

Managing posts is one area where BlogMate really shines, as editing a post is as easy as writing one - simply double-click any post in your list (and you can configure BlogMate to pull down more than the default 10 posts) to open it with all formatting preserved. Deleting a post involves nothing more than selecting a victim and pressing delete.

While you don't get some of the finer features of other blogging clients, BlogMate is already a pretty powerful plugin for the rocking swiss army knife text editor that is TextMate. Todd has done a great job here, and I hope enough interest builds to help make BlogMate worth everyone's while. If you're done reading and you're itching to get blogging, you can grab a copy and peruse more instructions and details from Todd's site here.

  • Nice Mac-like theme for Google Reader

I'm a real fan of Google Reader. It's quick, easy and accessable from my browser, so I don't have to keep a second app open just to check my feeds. There is one thing it lacks, however, and that's a Mac-like appearance.

That's why I like this theme by Hicksdesign. It will work with Firefox, Camino, Safari, Opera and Omniweb and looks great. The "add a subscription" window even has a nice, smoky transparency.

Please note, as the author does, that Google could change the code of Reader at any time, causing you trouble if you're using this theme. With that in mind, try it out! It looks really good. While you're at it, why not give Bloglines a Mac Makeover, too?

    Thanks, jopari!

  • First Apple retailer in Vietnam

    Filed under:

Ho Chi Minh City is the new home of Vietnam's first Apple retailer. The store, which is a subsidiary of Vietnam's largest company, FPT, will sell Apple merchandise including laptops and computers. This won't be an "Apple Store" per se, as the store will also carry software and electronics from other manufacturers such as IBM, Nokia, Samsung and Toshiba.

The details are still a bit scarce and we could not track down any pictures.
