- Fred Hickey bet against Apple and lost
Our sister blog BloggingStocks brings us a story about analyst Fred Hickey who recommended shorting Apple Inc back in January. People who took Hickey at his word, when AAPL traded at $85.94, would had to pay $102.20 to cover the short position, or about a 19% loss.Ouch.
So will Apple continue its growth? S&P analyst Scott Kessler thinks APPL shares may rise to $125 over the next year. At yesterday's Financials Q2 2007 conference call, Apple said to expect revenue to dip seasonally during Q3.

Filed under: Audio, Software, Cool tools, Productivity, iTunes
It's been a while since we first mentioned Sophia Teutschler's CoverSutra, a new iTunes interaction and manipulation app, and it's come quite a ways since its v1.0 debut. From the start it's offered things like global keyboard shortcuts for controlling iTunes (including one for toggling Shuffle), Apple Remote integration and album artwork that can live on your desktop underneath all your other windows (for that nice Exposé peek-a-boo effect), but recent developments have brought two major new features. The first is integration with the increasingly ubiquitous Growl notification system of which we're big fans, but the second big new feature finally made me decide to buy a license: integration with the Last.fm music community. For those who haven't seen it, Last.fm can watch what music you're playing (on both Mac OS X and Windows) and upload what is more or less a history of all the songs you listen to (it doesn't upload the songs themselves; it isn't the next Kazaa/LimeWire). From there you can share your playlists and discover new music through both friends and strangers who also use the site, and even embed your Last.fm playlist in a website or blog. It's a great service for any music enthusiast, and now it's built right into Sophia's excellent iTunes controller app. Consider me sold.
A demo of CoverSutra is available from CoverSutra.com, while a license sells for €9.95 or roughly $13 USD.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: iPod Family, iTS, Steve Jobs, Apple
Reuters reports that Steve isn't looking to create a subscription-based iTunes model. "Never say never, but customers don't seem to be interested in it," Jobs told Reuters. "The subscription model has failed so far." Jobs said that iTunes customers want to own their music, not rent it.I think that's a pity because I've tasted a subscription model and actually enjoyed using it. Given Apple's move away from DRM, a necessary component of music subscription, Jobs stance is not a surprise. TUAW readers weighed in on subscriptions in this recent post.

Make blog recently posted about how to run an iTunes DAAP server in Linux with Firefly. Firefly (né mt-daapd) provides an open-source digital audio server that supports iTunes-compatible streaming. With it, you can stream your media from a Linux platform to any other computer that's running iTunes. Best of all, it transcodes in real time. This allows you to stream file formats not normally supported by iTunes, such as OGG and FLAC.
Full disclosure: I occasionally write for Make.

Sure, you can pick up a cute iPod speaker or sweet Baby iPod shirt for Mother's Day, but wouldn't a luxurious 24-karat golden iPod send the "I love you so much Mom that money means nothing" message you really want to deliver? Money won't buy happiness but it can buy you a gold plated iPod. Just £299 for a 30G version or £399 for 80GB.
Unfortunately, the front face plates do not seem to be treated as the order page lists black and white fronts along with the gold plated backs. Which is a pity, because Mamma really wants a gold-plated scroll wheel.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

iLounge has posted an in-depth iQuiz review. Their verdict? For well-groomed iTunes libraries, the just-under-a-buck iQuiz game gets solid thumbs up. iQuiz uses your library's meta data (including facts like "year published", "artist", and so forth) to create an interactive game-show-like quiz game that goes well beyond the iPod's built-in and usually unsatisfying Music Quiz. The game also includes several trivia games based on music, movies, and TV shows with Apple-provided databases. There are definitely drawbacks to the software. iLounge points out that games end a little abruptly after 10 questions and iQuiz is pretty battery intensive. If you're considering whether it's worth it to spend your buck, the review is comprehensive and has lots of pretty screen caps. Go read it all.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Tips and tricks, Mac 101
There are many ways to rename files in OS X but most people use one of two approaches: either click-pause-click or click-return. And if you're used to using one style, the other style can prove a welcome surprise for your Mac-fu arsenal. In click-pause-click, you move your cursor to a file or folder, select it, wait a second and then click again on the name. A text edit field appears over the name and you can rename the file as desired. This is the renaming style I've most used over the years but there's a far easier way, and that's click-return. In click-return, you select a file or folder and then press the return key. Without having to wait, or worse, accidently open a file by double-clicking when you meant to rename, the text edit field instantly appears.

Filed under: iPod Family, Odds and ends
We've seen iPods go into space before. That's cool and all, but wouldn't it be cooler to determine what the astronauts actually listen to out there? The European Space Agency (ESA) wants to make that happen.
The task is simple: Think of the ten songs you would want to hear if you were on the International Space Station (ISS), and write them down. The ESA will declare one list the winner, load it onto an iPod and send that iPod to the ISS via their brand new Automated Transfer Vehicle (it will be the vehicle's maiden voyage, in fact) later this year. In addition, the winner will travel to Kourou, French Guiana (South America) to watch the ATV launch.
Check out the complete rules here. Good luck.

MacDailyNews reports that Apple TV units are flying off the shelves in Canada. Although Canadian purchasers cannot, as yet, download TV shows or movies from the iTunes store, this hasn't deterred Canadian customers from picking up the $349 (Canadian $'s) device. Ron Paley, CEO of Toronto's Carbon Computing, says "We're selling them as fast as we get them and it will keep growing in popularity", according to the article.Although no iTunes store yet sells high def content, many Apple TV buyers have figured out that they can pick up an inexpensive tuner for their Mac and digitize all the high def content they want. QuickTime and EyeTV both provide Apple TV-quality export now.

Filed under: Apple Corporate, Steve Jobs, Apple
Apple's Board members (well, the ones who aren't Steve Jobs) released a rather brief reply to Fred Andersen's statement that he tried to warn Jobs about possible accounting issues. The Board expresses their full confidence in his Steveness and goes out of their way to say they won't engage in a public battle with Andersen (though, a press release isn't exactly private).

Filed under: Software, Hacks, Productivity, Tips and tricks, Bad Apple
Sometimes even the best intentions of developers can't account for user preference, and after speaking with many other Mac users, this certainly seems to be the case with OS X's habitual tendency to preserve the formatting of text copied to the clipboard. For example:
I copy text from OmniWeb:
Pasted text before running the trigger:
Pasted text after running the trigger:
Quicksilver maven Dan Dickinson has figured out a sneaky way to strip out this formatting, and has turned the method into a handy Trigger. The trick works by pasting the contents of the clipboard into a terminal shell (where it loses all formatting), and then re-copying the text to the clipboard. For the trigger to work, you must have the Terminal Plugin installed. A full how-to is available on Dan's website.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Yeah, yeah, yeah, you New Yorkers get everything.* During this afternoon's financial conference call, Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer announced that a third Big Apple store is being planned. It's been suggested that this building at 401 West 14th Street will be the third store's location. At 52,000 square-feet, it would house one heck of a store.

Things are looking good for our favorite fruit company. Apple today stated that they shipped a whopping 1,517,000 Macs and a staggering 10,549,000 iPods during the second quarter of 2007. This represents an increase of 36% for Macs and 24% increase in iPod sales (who is buying all these iPods?). This translates to a revenue of $5.26 billion and a net profit of $770 million, or $.87 per diluted share.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Accessorizing the iPod is big business and the consumer electronics industry has responded in a big way, producing a wide range of iPod-compatible accessories. CE Pro has just published an article about iPod-integration design considerations. Some of their key points involve providing an accessible product that can be used away from computers and in real living situations like the living room and the kitchen and allowing users to fully access the iPod's libraries. It's an interesting take from a designer's rather than an end-user's point of view, and worth reading if it's the sort of topic that appeals to you.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Apple is hiring iPhone support representatives in Austin, TX. Reps will be responsible for providing iPhone support to Apple customers and partners. You can apply now, and training classes begin in May, which as far as we're concerned means that you can get your hands on an iPhone up to a month before the rest of us. The job requires experience with Microsoft applications (such a Office or Outlook), iTunes for Windows, and an ability to navigate in the Windows environment.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

When you think of business and Internet-enabled cell phones, you probably think ofCrackberryBlackberry. Why not think "iPhone" instead? That's what AT&T would like. They plan to market the iPhone to business users and are working on making sure that enterprise billing and support will be ready when the iPhone launches, according to a recent Macworld article. Some analysts disagree. Macworld quotes Ken Dulaney of Gartner, who thinks an enterprise iPhone would be a "serious mistake". Without a removable battery and with its driving-unfriendly button-less interface, Dulaney thinks the iPhone has definite business shortcomings. On the bright side, the iPhone is just as likely to wake you at 3 in the morning to the insane ravings of your boss as a standard cell phone.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Software, Internet Tools, Mods
We're a little late picking up on this one, but that doesn't make it any less cool: a Backpack user I know only as 'myobie' has posted a small installer called iChat Borderless that modifies the appearance of iChat to give it a more updated, near-Unified look. Fortunately, it downloads as a simple disk image with an installer that does all the heavy lifting for you, and it should look good on Mac OS X 10.4, 10.3 and even 10.2.
On my 10.4.9 system though, I get the borderless look, but brushed metal is still around, whereas iChat Borderless's screenshots clearly show the dark grey Unified look. Anyone else care to chime in?
Personally, I still prefer the old iChat mod that Dave Caolo found last summer. Sadly, the post at MacThemes Forums where this mod apparently lived exists no longer. Still, if the Leopard delay means you're jonesing that much worse for an update to iChat's aging UI, iChat Borderless should tide you over.
